Great Companion Book 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I was unsure about buying this book. I've found the K200D manual somewhat readable and have gleaned other info, such as using manual lenses, from the internet. I have never read a Magic Lantern Guide, and the reviews for other camera guides are generally positive but also sometimes mixed.

That said, I am extremely pleased with this book. It is exactly what I was looking for. To start with, the photos are all black and white, but they are very effective at demonstrating the point--much better than Pentax's drawings and photos. I don't know how much of the book is boilerplate with other guides, but it definitely seems to be tailored to the K200D.

I haven't read this book in detail yet, but I've already learned about the different Pentax series lenses as well as filter types. In addition, I've learned about its dedicated flash (AF-360FGZ). The instruction manual for the flash is full of tables and cryptic modes. This book makes it easier for me to understand and apply.

One thing that may be missing is information on using older Pentax lenses, specifically manual lenses. It's mentioned briefly in the aperture ring section, but that probably isn't sufficient information by itself. For me this is important because one of the reasons I went with this camera is the huge lens availability. Other than that, it's a great book that I'm glad I bought.

Editorial Review:

With easy-to-understand tips and advice, this Magic Lantern Guide will have owners of the new Pentax K200D taking great pictures in no time. Learn which file and resolution settings give the best image quality from the camera’s impressive 10.2 megapixel CCD image sensor. Find out how to get sharp, blur-free photos with the camera’s autofocus system. Discover when to use AUTO Pict, and which Scene modes work best for various subjects. Or try the more advanced creative modes to freeze action or isolate your subject for pictures that pop. Finally, hints on using the camera’s built-in flash and choosing accessory flash units and lenses help make mastering digital SLR photography fun, easy, and rewarding.

You can sell stock photography, too. 4 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Microstock, Google's "Image" search capabilities, and rampant stealing of images from Shutterfly, SmugMug, or PBase have made stock photography a lot less possible, and a great deal less profitable in recent years. However, if you're good with a camera and know how to produce large quantities of salable images, you can still make money in stock photography. Just don't expect big fees, and be happy with small payments that can pile up if your work is good.

This book, published in September 2007, is up-to-date enough that it advises you how to optimize your stock photography sales in today's real world. Read it carefully, re-calibrate your expectations, and get to work.

Editorial Review:

Digital Stock Photography equips photographers with everything they need to know to create digital stock photos that sell in today’s marketplace. From organizing a shoot to raking in the profits as the pictures sell and sell and sell again, all the steps are here: Capturing digital images, working with scans, digital delivery of images, evaluating equipment, organizing digital files, building an archive, and more. Thirty assignments, designed to reflect the latest trends in photography, provide readers with a blueprint for building a stock collection. Special sections explain how to market, negotiate and quote prices, and manage a business, plus obtaining model releases and protecting copyright.

He organized a group of top-notch photographers for a trek to Tasmania, the exotic island south of mainland Australia, where the only studio was Lightroom on a laptop. In Photoshop Lightroom 2 Adventure, Aaland uses hands-on knowledge from the trip to demonstrate how Lightroom can help you create the best possible image under any conditions.

  • Library module for uploading, sorting, tagging, ranking and adding keywords to your images
  • Develop module with Adobe Camera RAW for complete non-destructive color and tonal adjustments
  • Slideshow module, where you select and size images, and export the show to HTML, Flash, or PDF formats
  • Print module, which includes several templates for printing contact sheets or full images
  • Web module, where you can create Flash or HTML web galleries
