A great Field Guide 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This book is designed as 30% how to operate the camera and 70% how to use the camera to take pictures in various situations. The first part of the book (the 30%) is a brief overview of things you would probably learn in the camera operators manual, with some tips that are a nice touch to help you understand practical applications of the camera settings. But the author notes that you need to go the Nikon user manual for more in-depth descriptions of the camera's operaton in some areas. This is probably true, but I found the book provided a fairly complete discussion of the camera operation and I could operate without the manual.

In the 70% of the book, as I see it, the author takes on other aspects of photography and using the camera to take "great photos". He begins with the basics of photography (aperature, shutter speed, ISO, etc.) Then he discusses things such as using different lenses and their effect, how to use the external flashes and how to set up lighting. He delves into things such as how to work with auto focus, and depth of field.

He then discusses the various types of photography (e.g.night photography, photographing children, photographing landscape, night scenes, on-line auction photography, etc) and gives some very practical tips for taking the pictures as well as specific things to do to set up the picture and ensure the camera is set properly; Things such as having help from a parent and sibling to help relax a child during a photo session. The author also takes you through the software that Nikon provides, and offers suggestions on other options (some less costly...free) for doing some of these same tasks. The author provides a candid snapshot of the software packages, telling you their capabilities and limitations. This includes the Nikon software. Finally, a glossary is provided that de-mystifies the language of photographers. I found the book to be unbiased, informative and properly named "Field Guide".

Fantastic! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a great book, lots of useful information, and arrived in new condition. Very pleased with this book.

Not much more than a manual 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

If you've lost your manual to the camera, this is a good guide. I ordered this and Scott Kelby's Digital Photography books and ended up returning this guide. I know this guide is rated highly but Kelby went into better detail for the beginner. Combine Kelby's book with the factory manual and you've got a much better combination.

Very limited information for D-SLR cameras 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This book is fine for point and shoot, and non-D-SLR cameras. It does have some inaccurate information - at least, information that most underwater photo pros disagree with. It has very limited information for those who are using D-SLR cameras.

Underwater photography book 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Very disappointing. I was hoping for a more informative book. This was pretty basic photography. The previous reviews were misleading for me. This was a waste of money.

Editorial Review:

At first glance, the challenge of astrophotography may appear daunting. But not only are spectacular results possible, they are easy to learn with the step-by-step instructions provided in Stephan Seip's Digital Astrophotography: A Guide to Capturing the Cosmos. Today, amateurs can produce images that only twenty years ago a large professional observatory would have been proud of; and this book shows you how.

Learn how to:

  • Set up your camera for optimum results
  • Focus your camera for razor-sharp images
  • Take beautiful night shots with a simple compact digital camera, a tripod, and a telescope
  • Use a DSLR camera to shoot the Sun, Moon, stars, star clusters, and nebulae through your telescope
  • Get brilliant images of planets with a Webcam
  • Capture remote galaxies with a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera just like a pro

Also included are lessons on the processing that is done in the "studio" after your shoot, including how to:

  • Shoot RAW format images and improve them with calibration frames
  • Take short exposures of faint deep-sky objects and combine them into a longer exposure
  • Perform brightness, contrast, and color correction
  • Make corrections to correct for vignetting and uneven field illumination
  • Process your images for stunning results

Equipment requirements for astrophotography range from nothing but a simple camera and tripod to a multi-thousand dollar computer controlled telescope equipped with a CCD auto-guider and separate guide-scope. Researching the best equipment for your needs is a task in itself. Seip helps you to sort out which cameras are best for the various celestial objects, what to look for when buying a camera, and what accessories you really need.

The rewards of this fascinating hobby, as the author says, "Grants you unforgettable hours under the night sky; it allows you to produce aesthetically rewarding and lasting results. Astrophotography is a love-match between physics, photography, art, and digital image processing. It is exciting!"

Magic Lantern Guide for Canon EOS-1D Mark III 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Excellent, though brief, guide to this very powerful camera's many controls and functions. It goes much deeper into each of the zillion buttons, switches, and screens than the manual ever could, and the writer even discusses actual uses for each of them. Although it'd be better if many of the illustrations could be larger and in color, the clear black-and-white pictures provided are more than adequate. Good basic discussion of lenses and accessories, too, as well as information about the uses of Canon's provided software. The six-page, foldup pocket reference card is on good heavy stock and is, I think, plastic-coated and can stand up to a bit of carrying around as you get more familiar with the 1D Mark III in the field. Some of the Magic Lantern Guides I've seen aren't too much better than rehashes of the manufacturer's manual, but Michael Guncheon does a fine job of bringing the real world use of this pro camera into focus. If I were you, I'd buy it.

    Editorial Review:

Photographers will happily welcome Canon's two new professional-level cameras the EOS 1D Mark III and EOS 1Ds Mark III. They both offer numerous cutting-edge features to delight skilled shutterbugs. The 1D Mark III has a new 10.1 megapixel CMOS sensor (APS-H size) with Canon's EOS Integrated Cleaning System; a 3.0-inch LCD monitor with Live View technology and a redesigned 100% viewfinder; and a new 45-point AF system. It can shoot up to 10 frames per second continuously with a maximum burst of 110 shots. The 1Ds Mark III has all those elements plus a 21.1-megapixel full-frame Canon CMOS sensor.

Disappointing 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is dangerous for those who don't understand the computer side of photography as it is rife with errors. The most painful is in the first chapter where he attacks the JPEG format with unfortunately no understanding of why to use it and how it works claiming simply viewing a JPEG causes it to degrade. Calculations are wrong in terms of how many images of size x will fit in y MB. The list just goes on and on. I am trying to get AMPhoto to allow me to exchange this book as I have appreciated other books of theirs but this one is just horid.
