Extremely Disappointing Book--Buyer Beware 1 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

If you are looking for a helpful book on nature photography, keep looking. This book's focus is not on technique (or even nature photography) but mostly on gear and simplistic ABCs.

55% of the book is photos. None of the photos give detail of how it was shot or any twist on a technique used. This drops the page count from 207 pages to 93 functional pages. The first 61 pages offer nothing different than that of a camera's manual on shutter speed, white balance, etc. More wasted space is used on "gear" about tripods and cameras. Doing the math, we are now down to 66 pages. This process continues to where we have just a few pages that may offer some value.

Much of the remaining reduction comes in wasted space on "gear" which Sheppard rehashes multiple times. This book's only purpose would be to get someone not the slightest interested in photography to perhaps spark an interest. For any photographer at any level, the book offers nothing than what you find on camera manufacturer websites and manuals inside camera boxes. It is so basic that even beginners would be hard pressed to learn much. In the end, you are left wondering where the pages are about nature photography. Look elsewhere in Amazon for more suitable photography books.

Editorial Review:

For anyone who has waited for just the right moment to capture a blazing sunset or tried to catch the stark and simple beauty of bare tree limbs in winter, this manual will prove irresistible. Rather than simply providing ideas of what to photograph, Outdoor Photographer and PCPhoto magazine editor Rob Sheppard presents invaluable insider techniques and insights: use a histogram to get the ideal exposure, or white balance to create atmospheric images. Find out how to shoot crisp close-ups or awe-inspiring panoramic shots, and how to enhance pictures by using filters such as grads and polarizers. See how computer and image-editing software can turn ordinary images into extraordinary photos. Each section offers a listing of 10 Quick Tips for handling common outdoor photography challenges.

Editorial Review:

Adobe Photoshop CS3 Studio Techniques has been completely updated to cover the new features in CS3. In a friendly, easy-going style that's long on information and short on techno-babble, Photoshop Hall-of-Famer Ben Willmore guides you through the concepts, features that will truly make a difference in how you use Photoshop every day. He takes you from blindly following step-by-step instructions to an in-depth understanding of how Photoshop works, cutting through the fat to focus on what he considers to be Photoshop's essential features. This full-color book delivers the content in three easily digestible sections: Working Foundations, Production Essentials, and Creative Explorations, and includes a companion CD with bonus chapters and practice images so you can quickly and easily apply the techniques covered throughout. Beginning with the working foundations of Photoshop--the basic tools, palettes, layers, and masks, you'll quickly move on to real-world production techniques, such as how to sharpen scans, correct and optimize images, and use the powerful Curves and Channels features to your advantage. Finally, you'll get to fully explore Photoshop's creative potential by blending and enhancing images, creating collages, retouching photographs, colorizing, and working with filters and layer masks. By the time you finish this book, your creativity and efficiency levels should soar and you'll start to feel like you finally "get" Photoshop.

Great book! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book does a much better job of explaining the features and power of the K10d camera. I would highly recommend it to anyone that owns this camera!

Pentax K10D MAgic Lantern Guide. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I held off buying this guide for quite some time because the reviews I read stated that the photographs it contained were in black and white instead of color, and not very good.

I finally caved in and purchased this guide only to find that the black and white photographs were bright, clear and sharp (not "grainy" as I had pictured them) and - most importantly - extremely informative. The guide is an almost necessary addition to the manual that comes with the camera. The manual is steeped in detail and feels, sometimes, like a hindrance when you simply want to get on with it and take a few photographs. The Magic Lantern Guide, on the other hand, cuts to the chase and even adds a few detours that the manual does not go into. All in all, the guide has turned out to be a wise investment, allowing me to get the most - and the best - out of my great camera.

Editorial Review:

The K10D 10-megapixel digital camera is proof positive that Pentax has become a serious contender in the digital SLR market. With its impressive 10.2 megapixel image sensor, shake-reduction technology, automatic dust removal cleaning system, weather resistant body seals, and more, it’s both feature-packed and an excellent value. This new Magic Lantern Guide details every function and operation of this exciting camera. Page by information-packed page, it helps camera buyers become better photographers by helping them take advantage of every control, as well as providing general principles of photography and lighting.

Editorial Review:

Video Shooter is a guide to both the mechanics of the video camera and the craft of shooting. Written by a veteran in the industry and utilizing an engaging, conversational style (including illustrative anecdotes from the author's many years of experience), the book takes the reader beyond "button pushing" to teach the complete range of skills required to capture compelling images. Topics include equipment selection, camera setup and operation, shooting techniques, and working with lighting and audio. Although the techniques illustrated in Video Shooter are appropriate for users of a wide range of camera models, the book focuses on the most popular 3-CCD DV and HDV cameras. A chapter on issues and techniques relating to DVD output makes the book especially suitable for industrial, educational, and government video producers. The book also features a companion DVD with tutorials, footage demonstrating storytelling techniques, and technical matter such as a comparison of various filters.

Written by a veteran in the industry, Video Shooter is a guide to both the mechanics of the video camera and the craft of shooting.

Good book for beginners 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I found this book a good start for beginners but not sufficient to address the need of intermediate or advanced image editors. Well written but poorly binded.

Editorial Review:

Image Editing has become a key element in the photographic workflow. Image editing tools, most notably Photoshop, are usually sophisticated and deep applications - and fairly expensive. The only open source tool in this market is the GIMP, which has developed into a powerful multiplatform system, running on Linux, as well as OS X and Windows.

This book has evolved from the classroom materials the author developed and used in courses and workshops on Image Editing with the GIMP. It covers the basics of image editing and guides the reader through the functions and tools of GIMP from simple adjustments to more advanced techniques with layers and masks. The more important editing functions are presented in individual workshops. Moreover, the book covers the stitching of panoramic images and preparation of high-quality black and white images.

Editorial Review:

High dynamic range (HDR) imaging uses multiple exposures of the same scene to create a single image with a huge range of values between the light and dark areas of a photograph. It is an extremely popular and ever-growing niche of photography; a search for "HDR" at Flickr results in over 700,000 uploaded images. In this book by noted photographer and popular digital imaging expert Ben Willmore, you'll learn the best practices for the entire process: from image capture through tone mapping and output. You'll learn how to create stunning HDR images...and you'll go beyond those "basic" techniques to learn exactly how Ben creates his own trademark HDR images, which have a slightly surreal and painterly quality to them. Equally instructive and beautiful, HDR and Beyond will teach and inspire you to create stunning HDR images!

Found this book very helpful. Have some experience with underwater digital photography but found the explainations and examples very helpful. Took it to Palau...and left it with the captain who kept picking it up to read. So am ordering my replacement!

Underwater photography book 2 out of 5 stars.

Very disappointing. I was hoping for a more informative book. This was pretty basic photography. The previous reviews were misleading for me. This was a waste of money.
