Teach Yourself Visually Photoshop Elements 6 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book would be ideal for someone without any experience in working with photographs. For me it was too basic, and unfortunately it put me to sleep from the boredom! Every little tiny thing is mentioned as far as what to do on the keyboard. After going through several pages of basics and still not being able to do anything such as loading photos into the right place, I would finally try to figure out what I wanted to know on my own. Then the frustration would set in. Finally I discarded this book and took some classroom lessons! Good luck to all of you!

Editorial Review:

If you’re a visual learner, this book is for you. Clear, step-by-step screen shots show you how to tackle more than 150 common tasks using Photoshop Elements 6, in task-based spreads with easy, visual directions. Learn to work with toolboxes and palettes, import and organize images, map photos, create slide shows, enhance contrast and colors, combine images, and much more. Helpful sidebars offer practical tips and tricks, and succinct explanations walk you through step by step.

Great book, needs editing 3 out of 5 stars.

This is a great book, with lots of good ideas for how to set up lighting in differing situations. I've already improved my lighting using ideas from this book. What made this a tough slog is that the illustrations sometimes don't match up, and for a photography book, the illustrations tend to be kind of important.

I went on the publisher web site, and haven't found an errata, but will keep looking in the hopes, since cleaning up the figures (and adding the missing ones obviously referred to) would make this a great overall book.

Editorial Review:

Michael Freeman, the author of more than 20 books on various aspects of photography, now helps digital photographers see (and understand) the light! Superb instructional book for my needs 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book for two reasons (a) I needed an overview of IP and (b) I wanted to examine different pattern analysis algorithms with a practical twist. On both counts, as an non-IP researcher, I was very satisfied. The book is very well laid out, so well in fact that it would put to shame many of its rivals. It served my needs. I can't comment on whether it will meet the needs of a broader community. I would certainly recommend it based on my experience.

Decent for the non-technical 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I picked this up hoping to find a more approachable alternative to learning RAW, as many of my Photoshop students wanted something easier than Bruce Fraser's Real World Camera Raw. A brief skimming of Sheppard's Camera Raw made it appear as though it would do so.

Sadly, after reading it, I can't recommend it.

Overall, it's a decent overview of the capabilities of Camera Raw, aimed at photographers without any experience with Photoshop and very little desire to understand why some of the features in Camera Raw operate the way they do. That (over) simplification does make it easier to learn the basics, but it's sadly limiting for anyone who hopes to be able to truly optimize their images.

His very sketchy explanation of the new sharpening capabilities in ACR v4, his handwaving of the importance of the Calibration tab ("pretty geeky" and hard to use--not surprising given the lack of explanation of any of its controls); the lack of detail about how Vibrance and Saturation inter-relate; the lack of detail about Clarity; the lack of use of SmartObjects when combining multiple images--all made it an unsuitable alternative for me.

Worse were the many misstatements. While rarely important, they were enough to be off-putting. Saying ColorMatch is a "wide-gamut colorspace" (It's smaller than sRGB), various misstatements about CMYK, and numerous other little inaccuracies scattered throughout reduced my confidence in it.

It is, however, very approachable, especially for those with no experience with Photoshop, and particularly for those whose background is with film. The coverage of black and white was also quite respectable.

In that light, if a reader wants to learn JUST the basics, this isn't a truly bad choice--though I would still recommend the Fraser/Schewe Real World Camera Raw book for most photographers anyway, even though it's more technical: it covers more and in more depth in fewer pages.

Overall: not horrible, but better alternatives exist.

Editorial Review:

Expert photographer Rob Sheppard explains the details of Camera Raw, the steps for using it, the workflow process, and certain best practices that demonstrates how Camera Raw can empower the digital photographer. Encouraging you to use it as you see fit, he explores the enhancements in the newest generation and helps you deal with RAW's limitations, manage white balance and exposure, reduce noise (especially in night shots,) and learn to use camera settings that make the most of RAW capabilities.

Sort of a disappointment 2 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

After reading Michael's previous works I was prepared for a good and thorough treatise on astrophotography with digital SLR's. Unfortunately this book doesn't do that. $37 gets you a modest 234 page, soft bound book that could be described as more of a draft outline than a valuable reference work.

Images Plus, possibly the most powerful and economical commercial astrophotographic image processing and camera control program available today only gets briefly mentioned in passing twice in this book.

And there is nothing whatsoever on imaging the sun, h-alpha image processing techniques or solar eclipse techniques and equipment.

Many other subjects are treated rather too lightly to justify the price of this book too.

I believe that Jerry Lodriguss's book "A Guide To Astrophotography with Digital SLR's" is a much more useful work however it isn't exactly worth it's $40 price tag either.

There is more useful and thorough information available on the Internet for free. Start with the Digital Astro Yahoo discussion group and then supplement with Jerry Lodriguss and Paul Hyndman's web sites.

Editorial Review:

In the last few years, digital SLR cameras have taken the astrophotography world by storm. It is now easier to photograph the stars than ever before! They are compact and portable, flexible to adapt with different lenses and for telescope use, and above all DSLR cameras are easy and enjoyable to use. In this concise guide, experienced astrophotography expert Michael Covington outlines the simple, enduring basics that will enable you to get started, and help you get the most from your equipment. He covers a wide selection of equipment, simple and advanced projects, technical considerations and image processing techniques. Unlike other astrophotography books, this one focuses specifically on DSLR cameras, not astronomical CCDs, non-DSLR digital cameras, or film. This guide is ideal for astrophotographers who wish to develop their skills using DSLR cameras and as a friendly introduction to amateur astronomers or photographers curious about photographing the night sky.

Lots of great ideas here! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I've enjoyed the entire Photo Workshop series, and found this to be one of the best. I use the exercises as idea starters that often lead me in directions that are much different from what the author intended -- but I guess that's the idea. This book was especially valuable in coming up with new ways of shooting landscapes. Thank you!

Entertaining and full of 'secrets of the pros' 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

"Photos that Inspire" is the sixth and (for now) final book in the series, and the third that I've reviewed. Unlike the others I've read, this volume is more of a desert-after-the-meal book. Instead of being organized as a tutorial on one facet of photography, such as composition or exposure, that takes the reader from begging to end; this book provides a couple hundred examples of good photos in many different genres. Each entry is one page in length and includes a high resolution image taken by a different photographer; an entry by the author about what the photo has to teach the reader; a comment paragraph by the artist discussing the thought process when the image was made; and technical data such as ISO, film speed, aperture, etc.

"Photos that Inspire" is one part coffee-table book and one part how-to. The author, Lynne Eodice, is the online editor for Double Exposure, the web-based newsletter for Photo Workshop. Before the Wiley series was introduced, the only way to access these photo classes was to enroll in a membership with Photo Workshop.

This book will entertain, but more importantly, it gives you the 'secrets of the trade' from the perspective of hundreds of photographers. I loved it! It is not, however an indexed reference or a course unto itself. Rating five of five.

Editorial Review:

This unique book is packed with more than 200 magnificent photos, each expressing the photographer’s unique take on a scene or subject. With each image, the artist shares a description of the setting, what inspired the idea, and what the photo was intended to accomplish, along with the technical details — camera and lens used, shutter speed, aperture, and lighting. Stimulate your creativity with these breathtaking landscapes, incredible action shots, heartwarming portraits of people and pets, intriguing close-ups, and more.

Inspired!! 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 16 people found this review helpful.

This book is well written and well laid out. There are chapters covering just about every conceivable topic! I am nearly done reading this book and already it has helped me to determine a number of upgrades this year, including a couple of new lens. Much kudos to the author and I will be watching for new books from her in the future.

If you have a 5D get this book! I have bought all the others.. and they remain mostly unread on the shelf (or lost!). The color illustrations inspire and I have learned some new techniques by reading this text.

My one question is, are Canon Picture Styles *really* passed along when you set your 5D to RAW mode? The book says this is so, but I thought it was just for JPEG. Mind you.. I don't use Canon's DPP software (I use Camera RAW from Adobe with Photoshop instead) so maybe that is where a Picture Style will come through. Also.. I *think* they may show in Lightroom too (just started using that). Anyway.. this is more a question that a cricism of the book. Anyone having more details on this, feel free to add a comment!

Bottom line.. you will enjoy this book. If in doubt go look at a local copy 1st. You won't want to put it down and leave it behind if you do.

Editorial Review:

Learn to use every control, compare various lenses and Speedlites, and then explore how to get peak performance from your EOS 5D in all the shooting situations where it truly shines. Youll discover how to set the metering mode to get the results you expect, explore the qualities and effects of each type of lens and accessory, and what to pack in your gear bag (along with this book) for every shooting scenario.

Disappointing 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is dangerous for those who don't understand the computer side of photography as it is rife with errors. The most painful is in the first chapter where he attacks the JPEG format with unfortunately no understanding of why to use it and how it works claiming simply viewing a JPEG causes it to degrade. Calculations are wrong in terms of how many images of size x will fit in y MB. The list just goes on and on. I am trying to get AMPhoto to allow me to exchange this book as I have appreciated other books of theirs but this one is just horid.

Editorial Review:
