for people who are new to DSLR and A200 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

As a person who is learning DSLR photography with his new Sony Alpha A200, I decided to buy some books, one of which is Magic Lantern Guides. I didn't know what to expect because there was not much information about this book online, and I haven't owned a book from this series before either.

The book is in Black&White, size of a thick booklet that you would expect to get with any fairly complicated electronic. It will help you understand the every feature the A200 has. It is kind of an expended version of the original Instruction Manual with more words and examples. I wish Sony included this book with the camera.

On the other hand, if you already know some SLR photography, or own other DSLR books, this book may feel too repetitive since many concepts explained in the book apply to any SLR usage in general. In other words this book may not add too much to your knowledge.

If you are new to DSLR, you bought your A200 recently, and if you wish the Instruction Manual was much more descriptive, then this book is for you.

Chapters:
Understanding Digital Photography
Features and Functions
Digital Recording and In-camera Processing
The Menus
Camera and Shooting Operations
Flash Photography
Lenses and Accessories
Working with Images
Troubleshooting

Editorial Review:

Sony has something for beginning photographers, or those just going digital: an excellent entry-level D-SLR with a 10.2MP sensor, High ISO sensitivity range to 3200, and High ISO Noise Reduction technology. The 40-segment honeycomb, with its spot and center-weighted metering systems, offers outstanding exposure accuracy. And the Super SteadyShot® image stabilization systems increase a novice’s ability to achieve quality photos. Newcomers eager to master all the basics, and make the most of their new equipment, will find both the Magic Lantern Guides and the DVD Guide essential components of their photography kit.

Most complete discussion of model releases I have read 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

No question that this is the most usable and understandable discussion of model releases as it relates to photographers.

A couple of years ago I went to the library with questions about property releases and took out well over a dozen books on photography and the law and photography business. Almost all talked about model releases (for people) and several also had property release examples, but only ONE BOOK said anything at all about property releases and it was only about a sentence or two. All of my prior reading left me with more questions. This books explains the why so that you can more accurately make decisions regarding releases.

Editorial Review:

Do you need a release for a photo of someone you took in public? How about photos of buildings? Does it make a difference if the subject was paid to be in the picture? You can't answer these questions without more information. As the photographer, you need to understand your buyer's concerns in order to make savvy decisions about how you market your photos and to whom. Here's how to make money from all your photos, whether or not they have releases, by understanding the business aspects of the law.

Great information in this book 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I am a fairly experienced photographer who has recently taken up horse show photography. I found this book very, very helpful--especially the sections on the particular phase of each gait which will result in the best photo. I purchased this and Lesli Groves' book, and found them to compliment each other--but if I could only buy one, it would be this one. Specifically, the 'troubleshooting' and 'planning the perfect shot' chapters are excellent; I am equally enthusiastic about the chapters he on computers, printers, and paper. The examples clearly explain the text. I learned a lot from this book, and my first photo practice session showed a significant improvement in my work.

Good Overview 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book was a good overview of equine photography. I am an intermediate photographer with moderate horse knowledge. It was easy to understand and implement - even with my lower level skills. The pictures in the book were amazing! Most of the book covered photography, but the video part was very informative and simple to understand. I would definitely recommend this book if you are going to photograph or video horses even just for fun.

Editorial Review:

The perfect practical introduction to photographing and "videoing" horses and a valuable money-earning reference book.
