Great book for those with consumer point-and-shoot cameras 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book teaches the principles of digital photography--the quirks, the problems, the peculiarities, and how to work with these to get the most out of your camera. Most of the other books on the market spend one chapter on these fundamentals and then spend the next 400 pages discussing the functions of expensive, prosumer DSLR's like the Canon Rebel or Nikon D50/70, and post-processing on the computer. This is great if you have a DSLR and are looking to do a lot of post-processing.

However, if you have a consumer level point-and-shoot camera like the Canon Elph, Nikon Coolpix, Kodak Easyshare or Sony Cybershot, this extra material won't apply to your camera because it doesn't have these advanced manual controls. What this book does for the P&S user is teach you why some of your photos are coming out blurry, overexposed or dark. How to frame an exciting picture. How to use the flash to improve some pictures, and when the flash isn't appropriate. How to use the manual controls that are included on these cameras and how these controls can help you succeed in taking better pictures.

Editorial Review:

Digital Photography has truly reached the masses, and with this friendly, full-color guide new users can immediately start having fun with their digital cameras. It provides dozens of tips for taking better pictures and getting creative with digital photography at a remarkably affordable price. Topics covered include composing good shots, playing with light, close-ups, self-portraits, action shots, and event photography.

Editorial Review:

Window Seat: The Art of Digital Photography and Creative Thinking is a complete view of a creative project from the artist's perspective. Julieanne Kost, a Photoshop and creative thinking expert, has taken her own experience shooting images out of commercial airplane windows to create a unique creative seminar.

The first section of the book, The Art of Creative Thinking: The Principles, outlines Julieanne's method for staying creative in an increasingly complicated world. In her personal stories, advice, and philosophies, you'll find inspiration if you're stuck or just can't get started. You may recognize some of your own less-than-productive thought processes as she describes her own struggle to let go of the everyday flotsam of life to find a quiet mental space in which she can think, dream, and create.

The second part of the book, Window Seat: The Portfolio, is a collection of images culled from over 3000 photographs Julieanne shot from commercial airplane windows over a period of five years. The photographs are accompanied by brief commentaries addressing various aspects of the process, from the original inspiration to issues of control, subject matter, image selection, and manipulation.

The Appendix contains technical information: a discussion of the equipment and media Julieanne used to shoot the photos; how she processed the photographs using Adobe Camera Raw; the Photoshop techniques she employed to correct, retouch, and manipulate the images; her personal file management system; and how she prepares her files for printing.

This book is essential reading for photographers and artists looking for ways to stay creatively awake, aware, and alive.

Editorial Review:

George Schaub has taught digital photography to hundreds of people in workshops and courses across the country. All of his students have had one thing in common: They wanted to get the best images from their digital cameras. Now, in Hands-On Digital Photography, Schaub presents everything he teaches and everything he has learned in his fifteen years of teaching. Image processing software is great...but Schaub’s practical, project-based approach focuses on the camera and getting the best shot possible every time, so beginning to intermediate photographers can spend more time capturing the shot and less time manipulating it. In easy-to-follow projects, the author discusses how digital photography allows greater creativity; file formats and how they affect post-exposure processing; how to choose resolution and compression ratios; exposures for the best digital images; camera menus; RAW file format; in-camera exposure adjustments; in-camera contrast adjustments; and much more. Now it’s easy for photographers to get the most from their digital cameras and to make every shot a great shot!

Great resource for Digital IR work 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I picked up this book after already being really interested in IR photography, or as David corrects, is near IR photography.

He shows you how you can convert your camera, but also recommends LifePixel for conversion, which I had done. He does not steer you wrong there with that suggestion. I do have some sample images on my blog at [...]

David gives you several ideas for dIR photography and more than just typical IR subjects as well. This is a definate keeper.

Editorial Review:

Editorial Review:

"We are in the Stone Age of digital photography. We've figured out how to make some tools, but it is just now beginning to dawn on us what we might do with them. I've often been frustrated at the concentration on the technical aspect of digital photography with so little discussion of the aesthetics and heart behind the image making. This book is essentially a distillation of what I've been teaching over the last 25 years."

Master photographer Stephen Johnson has been taking beautiful landscape photography for decades, and teaching others the practical art of image making since 1977. While he started out with traditional film camera techniques, Johnson is widely recognized among his peers as a pioneer of digital photography. Stephen Johnson on Digital Photography chronicles his ride on the bleeding edge of this medium's evolution, and provides a practical in-depth introduction to digital photography that offers the latest techniques for beginning and experienced photographers alike.

What sets this guide apart from other books on the topic is its approach and execution: This isn't a Photoshop book, although Photoshop has its place within the book; it's a book that a master teacher and photographer creates after a lifetime of showing others how to understand and make great photography. With 5 color photographs throughout, including black/gray duotones, and 715 illustrations reproduced with a 200 line screen, Johnson's book covers everything from:

  • The basics of digital photography
  • Film camera techniques vs. digital
  • Practical approaches of the filmless photographer
  • Techniques of the digital darkroom
  • A photographer ™s digital journey
  • Photography, art and the future
  • This is a holistic work (and method for teaching) that embraces the state of photographic tools and techniques, blended with suggestions and experiences on why I make photographs, Johnson says. At its best, photography rides that crest where technology and art intersect. But the deepest engagement that photography can bring remains its ability to capture and hold a moment before the lens. In this age of digital manipulation, that fundamental fact must be remembered.

A good Tech. Text about Film. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This text is a must for any beginning film student because it does a real good job about detailing film. However, it simplifies the term so it isn't so mind boggling to grasp. And the pictures and diagrams and examples really help you understand th production side of filming and what Videographers, Directors, Actors, Editors, Production Designers, do in filmmaking. A great read for anyone who wants to make television programs and or films.

    Editorial Review:

Interested in digital moviemaking and want to focus on the directorial and storytelling functions of the media? DIGITAL MOVIEMAKING underscores the creative process--the kinds of decisions that are made and the strategies that are developed. Further, Gross and Ward stress the forethought and care that must go into all aspects of production, including the technical information that anyone engaged in production in this area should know. While concentrating on the narrative moving picture, many of the principles discussed are useful for other forms, such as documentaries, commercials, and music videos.
