Editorial Review:

To record the "invisible light " has always been an intriguing and fascinating experiment. The infrared part of the light spectrum is outside the range of what the human eye can see, but with a digital camera, we are able to record only this "invisible light " while blocking the "visible " part. The results are often unusual, yet beautiful, renderings of otherwise fairly common scenes.

Since as far back as the 1960 's artists have experimented with analog infrared photography, as seen on the album covers of Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa. But as we enter the digital age, new equipment and technology has opened up the exciting world of infrared photography to all.

This compact guide to infrared photography shows the beauty of infrared imagery, but also teaches how to shoot these images with your digital camera. The book provides the basic theoretical background, some information on cameras, filters and equipment, and lots of guidance on how to do infrared photography. This beautifully designed and illustrated book is the perfect companion for the aspiring photographer wanting to explore new photographic territories.

Not for the experienced digital pro 3 out of 5 stars.
10 of 12 people found this review helpful.

My disappointment is that the book is geared for the photographer who is still using film (who are they?). It is helpful to those who have not made the transition yet but is redundant to those who have already been using digital and Photoshop. The upside: The photos are lovely, and the packaging and album layouts are great too.

Editorial Review:

As quality digital photos become more achievable by parents and amateurs, this guide aims to help professional photographers reclaim the family demographic by outlining how to create highly artistic, technically masterful portraits and truly one-of-a-kind keepsakes. Starting with a look at how working digitally impacts a business and explaining the key benefits of new technologies, this manual shows how to lay the foundation for successful client interactions and quality digital photos. Both beginning photographers and seasoned pros will learn how to select the best equipment for the job, how programs such as Adobe Photoshop can make a typical shot really shine, how to work with a lab or print in studio, and how to design and produce standout albums for clients. Details on planning the shoot—from choosing clothing that works best to selecting props for children's theme images or family portraits—are also included.

A great guide to any Nikon point and shoot 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I've had my Nikon Coolpix for about six months now, and until I picked up this book I never felt comfortable using anything but the default settings. My coolpix is considered a point-and-shoot, but I didn't find it to be nearly that simple. This book not only showed me HOW to use the different settings, but it helped me understand WHEN I should use them too. This book covers both the equipment side of photography with your coolpix, and photography basics like composition, and lighting. I highly recommend this book - I feel more confident using my camera and my pictures have been better now that I have started using the different modes appropriately.

Editorial Review:

The Nikon COOLPIX Digital Field Guide is filled with everything you need to know in order to take amazing photographs using any Nikon COOLPIX camera. This full-color portable guide walks you through the essential controls, features, and functions of the Nikon COOLPIX point-and shoot camera line using step-by-step instructions and full-color images of each menu screen. This robust guide not only shows you how to adjust a variety of settings on your Nikon COOLPIX, it also teaches you when and why you should adjust them. The Nikon COOLPIX Digital Field Guide goes beyond camera settings to offer you a friendly guide to the principles of digital photography, covering the essentials of lighting and composition. Filled with amazing examples, this book also presents a variety of techniques for getting great photos, including specific tips and tricks for capturing portraits, candids, sports and action shots, travel pictures, macro photography, and much more.

Editorial Review:

Nikon's new 90D bridges the gap between the novice and the seasoned pro with a perfect combination of high-speed and quality. For anyone who has upgraded from their point-and-shoot or first DSLR to a Nikon D90 and wants to get the best shots possible but isn't sure what to do next. There's the manual of course, as well as competing books, and while they all tell D90 owners, often in 400+ pages, what the camera can do, none of them shows them exactly how to use their camera to create great images! This book  has one goal: to teach D90 owners how to make great shots using their Nikon camera. It teaches them how to use their 90D to create the type of photographs that inspired them to buy the camera in the first place. Everything in the book is in service of creating a great image. Starting with the top ten things they need to know about their camera, photographer Jeff Revell then carefully guides them through the Basic modes and into the Advanced modes of the camera. They'll get practical advice from a pro on which settings to use when, great shooting tips, and even end-of-chapter assignments that will allow D90 owners to immediately put to use all the great info in each chapter.

Wow - Color Management that is understandable! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I would give this book ten stars if I could. Color management is something that all digital photographers need to be competent with. There is very little on the subject that is comprehensible to those that are not technically inclined. This book meets and fills that gap in an excellent and understandable manner. And it is brand new! And full of color illustrations (something new for "Dummies books"). And it is geared to Photoshop Elements 5, a program with a large following. I teach a Digital Darkroom class using Elements 5 and this book is a natural follow on for that class. It also ties in very nicely with the new Photoshop Elements 5 for Dummies book. (Also full of color illustrations). Of course if you use the full versions of Photoshop, the principals are the same but you implement them slightly different, so the book is valid for both versions. It also covers the Mac version of Photoshop Elements. All in all, a great book!

Editorial Review:

  • Shows digital photo enthusiasts how to ensure that the color in an image file is accurately represented and reproduced, from camera or scanner to monitor or printer
  • Packed with color management solutions that will help novices create picture-perfect images
  • Discusses the main components of color management including understanding light, matching digital images to displays and prints, working with color spaces, calibrating a printer, and using color management tools
  • Familiarizes readers with the various color management tools that help calibrate consistent picture quality

Not for Novices 2 out of 5 stars.
19 of 28 people found this review helpful.

This book dishes out a lot of information in the small space between it's paperback covers. I read it looking for film lighting basics, and had a tough time grasping some of the more technical language involving exposure, T-stops, etc, even though I have a decent background in photography. The book does a poor job of addressing and explaining these key concepts. I gleaned a decent amount of information from the pictures and diagrams, but they were poorly aligned with the text, requiring lots of flipping back and forth. All in all, I would reccommend this book only to people with a fair amount of knowledge of the physics behind photography and/or film.

Editorial Review:

Explores the basic concepts necessary for designing and implementing lighting setups. This text adopts a conceptual approach to lighting, focusing on ideas and setups; it assumes readers have a prior knowledge of equipment. Coverage includes lighting, color control, texture, exposure technique, and elements that create image, 'look,' and mood.
