Clear like an Encyclopedia 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have owned this book for one year and have been intimidated by the many favorable reviews this author has received. However, after looking up a topic in this book and, once again, having minimal clarity shed on the subject, I've decided to tell it like it is. It reads like an encyclopedia. I have 2 advanced degrees and learned chess, photography, and photoshop from books. But this book is user unfriendly and if I do not tell that to others, then they took will waste their money. If you do not believe me, then leaf through the book at one of the local book stores and decide for yourself. At least I've warned you. Stick with Scott Kelby, Rob Sheppard, Ellen Anon and Tim Grey.

Helped Me Make Some Decisions 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 20 people found this review helpful.

I got this book because I am finally taking the plunge into digital photography. I wanted two books. One book would look at all the digital cameras that are avaiable and tell me which one to buy. I found this information in Consumers Report.

But beyond that, I had a bunch of questions as to what the various features and specifications really mean, and what are the differences in taking digital vs. film pictures. From my experience with film photography I knew that I wanted a single lens camers. I didn't want to carry around a bunch of lenses. And the single lens needed to be a zoom with the ability to focus up close for macro work.

This book answered the questions I had, and many more that I didn't even know I had. It covers the digital zoom cameras on a conceptual basis, it does not pick out a particular brand. But it talks about zoom lenses. It talks about macro lens adapters (I need to try out the particular camera I ordered before making decisions about what, if anything, I need in this area). More important it talked about the differences in film and digital in areas like color sensitivity, and the digital equivalents of the ISO film speeds. Like I said, it talks about things that I never thought to ask.

The few bucks that this book costs will be well paid back in either choosing the right camera or in getting better pictures.

Editorial Review:

Last season’s updated PCPhoto Digital SLR Handbook gave camera owners a great manual with all the technical guidance they needed; now, photographers who own compact digital cameras get their turn. Open up this richly illustrated volume and find in-depth instruction, with all relevant concepts, operations, and terms masterfully explained so amateur photographers can take full advantage of all of the newest features of these amazingly capable units. In addition to a general overview of digital versus traditional photography, there’s a thorough discussion of how to utilize image stabilization, smile and blink recognition technology, the built-in flash and zoom lens, and every feature and function: how to edit in-camera, get the most from preset shooting modes, and handle the memory card, accessories, and flash. Plus, a full chapter covers picture taking in the field.

A worthwhile investment when learning Photoshop Elements 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This book is well organized and easy to follow. You use the files on the CD that comes with the book to do the lessons. All of the lessons demonstrate principles of working with PSE and are not difficult to follow. The book also anticipates and points out what you can do wrong, so is helpful in that regard also. I also have worked with Photoshop Elements, The Missing Manual Photoshop Elements 5: The Missing Manualwhich is much more comprehensive but takes a lot longer to work through. You may want to own both books eventually, but this one is a good start since you actually get to complete processes right away, such as touching up old photos, that come in handy whether or not you have learned everything that the program can do. If you are struggling with teaching yourself PSE, give this book a try.

Editorial Review:

Adobe Photoshop Elements 5 Classroom in a Book is the most thorough and comprehensive way for new users to master all the new features in Adobe's consumer-targeted image editing software. Each chapter in this step-by-step, project-based guide contains a project that builds on the reader's growing knowledge of the program as well as end-of-chapter review questions to wrap up each lesson. Readers can follow the book from start to finish or choose only the chapters that interest them. Readers will learn the basics of editing their images with Photoshop Elements and will learn the program's myriad new features, including new flexible layout options, web photo galleries animated with Flash, improved color correction and lighting tools, and the ability to share and download photos from mobile phones and handheld devices.

Excellent for Much More Than Just eBay Photos 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Using simple, lo-tech language and a wealth of color photos, this excellent book can teach anyone to arrange, light, photograph and even edit macro (closeup) pictures. I bought it sight unseen on a friend's recommendation, and it's even better than I thought it would be.
The instructions are always clear and simple, and every instruction is illustrated with full-color, detailed examples. The results make you look like a professional photographer (or could even make you become one!).
I've bought tons of books on Amazon; but this is the first one I've felt compelled to review, because it's so darn good.

Very small type. 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I have been reading this book since it was delivered. It includes a very interesting combination of topics on the latest in digital photography that are exposed quite well. Nice diagrams and pictures are used to illustrate and explain the different concepts on digital exposure and image capture and processing. It is very informative and also makes reference to the newer software. Unfortunately the letter type is so small that it makes for very uncomfortable reading (almost offensive). It is a shame to see how space is wasted in the book layout instead of using this space to include a bigger type to offer easier and more enjoyable reading.

The Plain and Simple Truth 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

If you are looking for a straight forward and simple approach to appreciating and applying the intricacies of the Sony A700, this is an extremely useful tool. It fills in the always present user manual gaps and simplifies the complexities of the menus and many features into more comprehensible bits.

For example, it clearly explains such essential functions as White Balance,ISO, Histograms, Drive Mode, light metering and focusing nuances, I was able to immediately begin applying lessons learned from this book with the camera in improving my results in low light situations.

One could wish for more comparative photos and more detailed views of on-camera features, but that is a mere quibble compared to the useful information designed to quickly elevate one in mastering the many capabilities of this full-featured SLR.

Editorial Review:

Anyone who buys this superb Sony semi-professional camera will want to try out every one of its awesome features. The 12.24 MP Exmor™ APS-C size CMOS imager, with on-chip noise-canceling before and after A/D conversion, provides over 12 million pixels. A Dynamic Range Optimizer with Advanced Auto mode allows you to select any of 5 dynamic range optimization (DRO) correction levels; Super SteadyShot® Image Stabilization has built-in technology that moves the image sensor in response to camera shake, reducing blurs. Magic Lantern shows photographers how they all work!
