Mostly Macro 4 out of 5 stars.
28 of 28 people found this review helpful.

I've looked at many of the recent books on digital macro photography, and this is the only one that devotes most of its space to macro. Too many that claim to be about macro or close up photography (e.g. "The Magic of ..." by Meehan) largely rehash guides to digital photography in general. Hoddinott does some of that too. I could have done without the "post processing" chapter at the end. But fortunately Hoddinott keeps the book mostly focussed on the subject promised in its title. He gives sensible advice that ranges from the moderately technical to the openly mundane. The latter includes surprisingly helpful suggestions about what time of day and where to find subjects suitable for macro. This is an introductory book that even pros could learn a few things from. One of the most unusual and admirable features: he shows his own mistakes and how he corrected them (though I suspect the mistakes were deliberate). Finally, his own photos (often of quite ordinary subjects)are imaginative, some even stunning.

Editorial Review:

With a close-up camera lens, shutterbugs can capture a landscape in a water droplet, a dragon’s face in a dragonfly, an alien planet in a backyard fungus, or a futuristic civilization in a computer circuit board. The magic field of macro photography comes alive through digital cameras and Photoshop programs, as simple instructions combine with jargon-busting tips to demonstrate each essential technique. Over 200 full-color photos and 750 illustrations showcase the possibilities for making spectacular images with ordinary equipment. Besides ideas for making framed photos, special sections show how to create greeting cards, stationery, and other practical items and gifts.

Good, not Great 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 9 people found this review helpful.

About half this book is devoted to the D300, and is done relatively well. Two criticisms: the other half is generic photography information and the D300 data is not as in depth as I would have liked.

Disappointingly not enough D300, full of errors and way too much very basic photo class 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Buying a D300 without firmly knowing the basics of photography is like buying a plane without having had flying lessons; it's nice to look at but you can't do much with it. Two thirds of this book is regrettably filled (padded?)with basic photography lessons that are too entry level for the kind of photographers who would or should purchase the very sophisticated D300 in the first place. To make things worse it even mis-labels the metering control for the D300, and, as noted in another review, is replete with other errors. Starting from page 94 through to the end at page 250 the book covers basics like ISO and shutter speed, lenses, flash, architectural, child, etc. photography in basic terms unrelated to the D300. That means most of the book is devoted to general photography, not the D300. The Magic Lantern Guide series on the D300 is a much better resource, with far more detailed information (and a quick reference wallet card)that goes way beyond Nikon's detailed manual. If you are anything more than a beginning photographer don't waste your money- buy the Magic Lantern Guide instead.

Editorial Review:

With 12.3 megapixels, a three-inch LCD, Live View, and the ability to shoot up to eight frames per second, your D300 is an awesome camera. The more you know about using it, the more youll get for your money, so take this guide with you on every shoot. Along with detailed instructions on using every feature, it provides full-color images of menu screens, helps you select lenses, and offers guidance for getting magnificent images in many situations.

Great Reference for Digital Photographers 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Understanding RAW Photography is a rare gem. In 140 pages, Andy Rouse explains the basics of how to deal with digital images from the photographer's point of view. This book is not 500 pages of fluff with some good information tossed in. It is a handbook of what steps the photographer must perform after the shutter is pressed.

Workflow is thoroughly discussed in 16 pages. Workflow is simply setting up the camera to shoot RAW file format, managing the RAW data, and editing/correcting the RAW data. This is tedious but not difficult work. Every DSLR camera manufacturer has their own proprietary software to deal with their own version of RAW data, so read the owner's manual for your camera and use the proprietary software or use freeware that accepts your camera's version of RAW data.

Chapter 2 "In the Field" has many excellent exposure tips, techniques for keeping the camera sensor clean, and backing up the camera memory card while on assignment.

The rest of the book deals with image editing, correction and processing, printing and digital asset management. These topics are discussed in a straight forward manner with enough information given so that the user can get an understanding of the process and then seek more advanced texts if greater detail is needed.

Every DSLR photographer today has the ability to become their own photo processing laboratory. Gone are the days of dropping off rolls of film at the processor's facility and then reviewing proof sheets or slides. Each user can set up the camera, capture the image, download the RAW files on to the computer, edit, correct, process and finally print the photos. This book helps the busy photographer understand and master this series of steps.

Editorial Review:

A RAW file allows far more flexibility than a JPEG will, and enthusiastic amateur photographers everywhere are discovering their vast potential. RAW files open up a whole new world of image processing where photos can go from ordinary to perfect simply and quickly. In Understanding RAW Photography, renowned photographer Andy Rouse follows the entire procedure from start to finish: the volume takes the form of an easy-to-follow workflow overview, covering all the essentials right from the beginning of a shoot. Rouse explains how to make software choices; work in the field; edit, correct, and process the picture; and ultimately display it in print or on screen. A wide range of images and screen grabs illustrate techniques both basic and advanced, as well as creative possibilities.

Good Information 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 9 people found this review helpful.

First off, this is written for the more "serious" amateur. It does, therefore, figure that you are probably something of a photographer to begin with. He refers to f/stops and other "more technical" photographic terms. I am just beginning to get into photography, so some of what he was talking about was above my head. This is not a bad thing. While I may not use all this information at this stage (I only have a Point & Shoot Kodak), if I decide to get into this more and get a true SLR or DSLR, this will come in handy.

Having said that, there is a lot of good information for a lowly beginner such as myself. It is written in a fairly easy to understand way so even us true amateurs can understand. The addition of the section on Photoshop is also a wonderful thing. One may as well learn to use all of the 'tools' of the trade. Some may see Photoshop as a crutch; I feel it is a good way to perfect the picture you took to get it to be more of what you saw when you first snapped it. Why suffer with a picture that is less than perfect when you did everything correctly when you can contrast it better or sharpen it up?

All in all, this is a book very worth picking up, whether you are a true beginner, a harder core amateur, or a total professional. It will teach everyone something, regardless of skill level.

Editorial Review:

Written by photography experts--including a Pulitzer-Prize winning National Geographic photographer--this full-color book is a must-have for amateur photographers serious about improving both the quality of their photographs and their proficiency in the digital darkroom. The book is the perfect combination of a technical treatise on digital imaging and an artistic exploration of light, composition, and form, allowing you to glean the essential techniques needed for digital photography without losing sight of the artistic and aesthetic aspects of the craft. Using an easy-to-follow approach, the authors explain the image conceptualization process through shooting, editing, and image correction to finished print. In addition, top photographers from a variety of disciplines offer real-world advice on how they use digital photography to create compelling images for high-profile magazine articles, advertising campaigns, and fine art prints.

Well written explanation of going from start to finish for a short animation 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Roland has a clear and entertaining writing style. In "Animating with Blender" he seems to have answered many of the questions I've had on how to go about doing my own short animations. I'm an experienced Blender user (and developer), but have only dabbled with the animating and rendering capabilities of Blender, and this book has greatly increased my confidence of being able to tackle those topics in my own potential animations.

It also great to have simple production files to try and use, they should be quite useful for roughing out my own animation ideas even if I ultimately use self created assets.

A quick disclaimer, I'm the author of the original story idea of 'The Beast', and even though Rolands final script and resulting animation are significantly different than my original idea - I might have a bit of bias :)

Also for those interested I thought I'd include the original story email that I sent to Roland...

********

I thought you might like to see my script attempt[.]

This one could be done extremely quickly with a small team (probably even
fairly quick for a single decent animator) - unfortunately not much in the way of technical challenges.

Characters:

Mom - typical mom of a 2 year old
Beast - 2 year old - a typical terrible 2 based on my nephew, nicknamed 'the beast' by my mom.
cat - imagined character - the typical feline that is suspicious of children, but generally intent on ignoring them

Set - living room - has tv in southwest corner at 45 angle to room. Has a couch with two endtables facing the TV, a houseplant is sitting on one, a large planter with plant is elsewhere in the room. The cat is lying on the couch back. Beast is sitting closely in front of tv watching a cartoon.

FADE IN: mom is spraying house plants, the phone rings, she walks out of the room setting the spray bottle down on an end table near the couch.

1) Bored toddler (the beast) is watching TV (cartoon) sittin 'indian style', elbows on knees

2) He rolls onto his back sprawling out his arms and legs - exhaling a sigh of boredom

3) starts blowing his lips - making a pbbbtt sound with his lips - sighs again

4) he rolls over and climbs onto the couch

5) as he climbs on he notices the squeak of the leather, starts bouncing and squirming trying to make it squeak again.

6) as he is getting bored with this he notices the cat - which gives him a warning stare, then snuggles its nose more firmly tucked into its tail.

7) toddler sighs again and looks around - this time spotting the spray bottle

8) he grabs the bottle and starts spraying things, the plants, the end table, the couch, and then accidentally sprays the cat..

9) the cat jumps up, shocked - then the beast suddenly gets an evil grin on his face

10) he starts squirting the cat deliberately

11) the cat takes off knocking over various items (plants, and pictures off shelves, assorted nicknacks) as the toddler pursues squirting the cat and all sorts of other things

cat runs through a doorway, and through moms legs - the beast runs into mom and falls over backwards.

Not quite sure on the exact ending after that
