Simply put this is the definitive book on CL on by the single most recognized CL expert in the industry. For beginners to 'experts' this book has something for everyone and I guarantee you will learn something(probably a whole lot) from this book.

Editorial Review:

If you understand CL and can make it work, you’re ready to use this book to crank your abilities up to the next level. Learn from the expert who helped develop the AS/400 and S/38 and who wrote QUSRTOOL’s TAA tools. Write better CL programs and speed up productivity. You’ll learn more than 200 field-tested techniques to help you implement common CL programming tasks, with exercises at the end of most chapters to solidify your skills. Specifically, in 30 chapters, Sloan offers field-tested techniques that can help you when implementing common CL programming needs (e.g., passing parameters and allocating objects), when working with messages, when working with files, when working with CL programs, when working with IBM-supplied programs, and when setting up your programming environment. In addition, at the end of most chapters, Slao nprovides exercises that help you understand the topics that have been presented and give you the chance to try some of the techniques.

Editorial Review:

Whenever we walk into an AS/400 site, we hear the same two pleas: “Make our system perform better” and “Help us figure out why our system is not performing well.” The size of the site makes no difference – the question of performance applies to small B-model systems as well as the largest Advanced Series RISC models. Unfortunately, solutions to perform problems are not always straightforward. Sometimes solving a request to make an AS/400 perform better is simple; however, the solution is often complex. Nevertheless, whether your system is small or large, whether you have a large staff or are a one-person shop, you have the same questions and many of the same problems. Tuning your system for performance is a matter of finding answers to your questions. Many answers are in the IBM documentation (e.g., Performance Tools Guide, Operator Guide, and Work Management guide), but they can be well hidden. There is no straightforward road map to better performance. The chal! lenge of performance tuning is understanding the workings and interrelationships of multiple parts of the system, such as communications, database, and hardware, as well as your end users and your business. In other words, having a good grasp of the big picture of performance tuning is a large part of finding a satisfactory solution. Most people can tune their own systems with some help and direction. Our intent is to help you tune your AS/400 when needed, but also to give you insight into monitoring and correcting performance problems before they become severe. You can use the material in this book regardless of whether you have a CISC or RISC machine. The primary difference is in the way the Timing and Paging Statistics Tool (TPST) and Sampled Address Monitor (SAM) are presented. On RISC machines, they’re now part of the Performance Explorer; CISC machine users can simply follow the book.

Editorial Review:

This book examines the issues relevant to the design of vector and pipelined computer systems using the Cray X-MP/24. The purpose of the book is to help the readers arrive at a deep understanding of how vector processing systems really work. These insights will be useful to the scientist who would like to obtain maximum performance from a vector machine, to the computer science student, and to the compiler writer. The book can also be used to supplement a regular textbook in a graduate or senior level course in computer architecture. The book looks at the overall design of the Cray X-MP and then explores the operation of the machine by looking at detailed timings of various instructions and code segments. It examines such issues as instruction issues and buffering, handling of jump instructions, use of registers to hold intermediate results, memory conflicts resulting from vectorization, optimal vectorization of multiple statement loops, and synchronization problems with multi-tasking. Detailed Gantt charts are provided to guide the reader through the timing issues.

Editorial Review:

Now you can stop wasting countless hours wading through IBMs technical manuals, looking for programming examples to show you how a technique really needs to be coded. This book and companion CD contain more than 70 prototypical techniques and coding examples that you can use and adapt for hundreds of applications. From system APIs to SQL, the material presented encompasses the most useful and powerful features of the AS/400. Far more valuable than just code samples, each example is accompanied by a thorough line-by-line explanation of the techniques employed. As a programming tool or as a learning aid, this book is the first place to look for practical, hands-on development assistance. If you have read and used the original AS/400 Programmers Handbook, you know just how valuable a book like this can be. As in his original, author Mark McCall begins each section of Volume II with a thorough discussion of each topic, including how it fits into everyday application use. He then shows and explains several examples from real-life applications--code thats ready to run in your applications. He tells you what the example does and how it works, all in a programmer-to-programmer style that makes you feel as if you have a mentor sitting right beside you. Designed to work as a functional programming tool, each example is presented as a self-contained instrument, allowing you to get in, get the information you need, and get on with business. This book contains 5 modular coding technique examples, including /Copy compiler directives, subroutines, dynamic subprograms, subprocedures, and service programs, 24 examples of RPGs most useful built-in functions, 7 exit program examples, including user profile monitoring, data transfer security, and job notification, 8 system API examples, including command execution and processing, retrieval APIs, list APIs, user space APIs, and ILE CEE APIs, 5 database constraint examples, including check constraints, unique and primary key constraints, and referential integrity constraints, 3 database trigger program examples, and 19 SQL examples, including logical views, selects, joins, summaries, and embedded SQL. Audience: AS/400 programmers Level: Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced. Includes CD-ROM containing all code examples.

Editorial Review:

Quantum information science is a rapidly developing field that not only promises a revolution in computer sciences but also touches deeply the very foundations of quantum physics. This book consists of a set of lectures by leading experts in the field that bridges the gap between standard textbook material and the research literature, thus providing the ne- cessary background for postgraduate students and non-specialist researchers wishing to familiarize themselves with the subject thoroughly and at a high level. This volume is ideally suited as a course book for postgraduate students, and lecturers will find in it a large choice of material for bringing their courses up to date.
