Editorial Review:

Programming in RPG/400, Second Edition, refines and extends the comprehensive instructional material contained in the original textbook. This second edition features a new section that introduces externally described printer files, a new chapter that highlights the fundamentals of RPG IV, and a new appendix that correlates the key concepts from each chapter with their RPG IV counterparts.

This illuminating textbook provides a strong foundation in the essentials of RPG/400 programming and addresses the needs of students and instructors in transition to RPG IV. As a teacher or student, you will welcome the "real-world" approach used throughout -- as will the eventual employers of those who complete a course based on this text. Dr. Yaeger designed the book to give students a thorough understanding of how to use RPG/400 efficiently in a variety of practical applications.

The book begins with an overview of programming for students new to the field. The fundamental concepts of business programming, as well as the development of the RPG language, are presented to ensure your understanding of how RPG evolved to the formats in use today. Everything you need is here to learn how to write a well-designed RPG program, from the most basic to the more complex. Among the topics treated are the principles of top-down design, including the use of subroutines; externally described files; interactive programming; tables, arrays, and advanced data definition, as well as byte- and bit-level operations; inter-program communications; a summary of RPG II with its fixed-logic cycle and use of indicators; and a preview of RPG IV.

Each chapter includes a section of questions, exercises, and programming assignments that reinforce the knowledge you have gained from the chapter and strengthen the groundwork for succeeding chapters. Three appendices cover essentials of AS/400 features needed for program development, SEU, and debugging programs. A fourth appendix contains data file definitions used in the book's programming assignments. The final appendix outlines how the concepts presented in each chapter are handled in RPG IV. An instructor's kit is available on diskette that includes complete data files and solutions for all programming assignments.

This textbook belongs on the required reading list for anyone learning RPG/400 -- and RPG IV -- for use in today's business world.

Excellent study guide 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the best study guide out their for iSeries Command Operations certification. I have got this guide and in a couple of days I sat for the iSeries certification exam, I passed with a score of 88%. You should note that this guide was my only resource on the iSeries but I also had a little background of the iSeries system from my work experience. My colleague also used it and he has passed the test with a score of 83%.

I do recommend this Study Guide if you are interested in sitting for the iSeries Command Operations certification exam and if you are already have a background of the iSeries system. If you are only interested in general understanding of the iSeries system then maybe you will find better guides out there to help you in understanding the iSeries as this book is geared into preparing you for the iSeries certification exam.

Editorial Review:

Offering a fast and easy way to learn advanced AS/400 operations concepts and prepare for IBM's test 000-053 (AS/400 Professional System Operator), this book takes basic- to intermediate-level AS400 operators through all of the aspects of AS/400 operations required to pass the 000-053. It serves both as a study guide in preparation for the certification and as an excellent operator training text. Users learn the necessary concepts of advanced operations through a step-by-step tutorial on each topic followed by hands-on lab exercises that will reinforce what was learned in the text. This certification study guide is the second in the operator's certification series.

Master DOS/VSE JCL in a week & Enjoy 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Steve Eckols has taught DOS/VSE JCL in a very absorbing story telling manner. You can read this book fast, and if you are conversant with MVS JCL already, you would not miss the important tips for writing good JCL nor you would overlook the pitfalls that make your JCLs fail. I am still looking for ways to use the MVS concept of using a member of a partitioned data set [PDS] - say for compiling a member of a PDS, containing a number of source modules. I request Steve to include that in this book and send me a email.
I do not have access to a VSE environment right now, but I consider myself fully prepared to work in the VSE environment of my client after I have gone through 60% of this book.
Enjoy & learn VSE/JCL with POWER and ICCF.

Editorial Review:

This book was the all-time bestselling VSE JCL book when VSE was more widely used than it is today. Since its publication, VSE has been enhanced, but this book still provides a useful grounding in VSE.

Editorial Review:

For the first time in book form, this comprehensive and systematic monograph presents the methods for the reversible synthesis of logic functions and circuits. This methodology offers designers the capability to solve major problems in system design now and in the future, such as the high rate of power consumption, and the emergence of quantum effects for highly dense ICs. The challenge addressed here is to design reliable systems that consume as little power as possible and in which the signals are processed and transmitted at very high speeds with very high signal integrity. Researchers in academia or industry and graduate students, who work in logic synthesis, computer design, computer-aided design tools, and low power VLSI circuit design, will find this book a valuable resource.

Not a very thourough refernce book 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I was looking to buy one good, comprehensive reference book re: SQL/400. This is not it. Too basic, with limited examples. Most functions are covered with one paragraph descriptions, with the whole book coming in a skinny, soft-covered, and under a half inch thick.

Too basic. Not even a good summary of AS/400 manual. 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book is better easy reading with very little insight to the more intricate functions of SQL for the 400. Might be useful if you have never programmed SQL.

A good reference guide for SQL commands 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is the only book that I have found which provides reasonably comprehensive coverage of the SQL capabilities which have been introduced on the AS/400 since V4. It provides a good reference for the AS/400 syntax of functions such as CASE, CAST, and various date functions that aren't covered will on other books that I have seen. This book is better as a reference tool than as an introductory tutorial.

Editorial Review:

From basic terminology and syntax to copious examples of real-life code, this is the complete guide to SQL/400. It offers a thorough grounding in the program for novices, but even very experienced AS/400 programmers will find it an invaluable guide to such issues as how to embed SQL within an RPG program, how to use SQL on distributive databases, how to embed SQL statements within an HLL program, and much more.

One of the best written how-to computer books 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I, had to becomes a CICS expert in a couple of days. This book is unbelievably easy to follow. My complememts to Alida M. Jatich. I've learned almost all my computer skills through books. This one ranks up there with Stern and Stern's 'Structured COBOL' and McQuillen & Princes 'MVS Assembler Language

Good Instructional Tech manual 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Overall the book delivers what it promises. Being placed in a position where I had to assume responsibility for an existing CICS system with no formal training or other assistance in the applications programming area, I found the book to be a rather clear and concise presentation of CICS applications programming and a definite aid in understanding why the production application was structured the way it was. The book relates to an actual production application and presents the fundamentals quite well. The screen development and interaction between screens and a Cobol processing program are understandable and presented rather well. I did find the index way too short to use as a quick reference. I finally created my own which solved the problem. Unfortunately the figures and examples are too often presented on different pages resulting in paging back and forth. Having them on opposing pages would make the refrencing of examples and text a lot easier. I would also have liked if the examples of code printed would have had the sequence numbers included.

Editorial Review:

This Second Edition includes all relevant information regarding IBM's latest major update releases of CICS. Using a step-by-step tutorial, it shows how to develop and maintain CICS code for maximum system effectiveness. Coverage includes all commands, support functions, and VS COBOL II; detailed information on using the first microcomputer (OS/2) version of CICS; and table setup and system utilities for applications programmers developing software on personal computers. By providing a wealth of real-world examples, teaches readers a practical, streamlined approach to problem solving using the latest CICS coding techniques.
