Makes Mac OS X Safe for the Rest of Us 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

At last, a book that's taken away the fear of Mac OS X. Mr. Steinberg's newest book not only tells you how to get the most out of your Mac hardware, he shows you how to make Mac OS X 10.1 play nicely. I was pleased to discover a way to do a clean install of Mac OS X without erasing my drive (something Apple has yet to figure out) and a handy terminal tip that helped me empty the trash when I started getting messages that it was "in use." I highly recommend this book.

Filled with case histories to illustrate common problems 5 out of 5 stars.

Great essential book 5 out of 5 stars.

Excellent book for beginner to pro! This book makes it easy to keep your PC running healthy and troubleshoot potential problems.
I have Troubleshooting, Mainaining & Repairing PCs by Bigelow. I came to a couple conclusions:
1. I am not likely to upgrade, repair or physically install components. Therefore, I do not need a book about upgrading or installing.
2. I would rather keep this paperback on my desk, instead of Bigelow's Hardcover, 1000+ pages.
Enjoy the book. I hope it is as helpful to you as it is to me.

Editorial Review:

Most self-help computer books speak in technobabble as if they were written for rocket scientists or computer geeks who live and breathe technology. Surviving PC Disasters, Mishaps, and Blunders takes a different approach. This engaging and very accessible guide covers the types of problems all PC users will likely face at one time or another—so don’t be caught off guard without it! The authors calm the fearful with easy-to-follow solutions and a humorous style. (Let’s face it—at some point all disasters, mishaps, and blunders appear humorous once you’ve gotten past them!) For a PC that is smashed, hacked, in flames, has come down with a nasty virus, or just isn’t working as it should, this book will give you the helpful tips that will help solve problems or prevent them from occurring in the first place.

Nothing strikes horror into the heart of a PC user faster than the words "Permanent Fatal Error" or seeing a PC that was working perfectly well seconds before just freeze up and send bizarre error messages. Surviving PC Disasters, Mishaps, and Blunders covers a wide range of problems, including security issues and theft, blunders arising from general clumsiness, disasters such as fire and floods, techniques for protecting important data from scammers and hackers, disasters that can be caused by nasty viruses, tips on buying hardware devices without getting ripped off, techniques for avoiding hard-drive crashes and recovering lost data, identity theft, and much more. You’ll learn simple and practical ways to use and protect your PC and other support devices (like printers and scanners), and how to cope if disaster does strike. The book is cleverly organized by disasters, mishaps, and stupid blunders that can occur as you use your PC.

Great Reference For The PC Builder - Unfortunately Outdated 4 out of 5 stars.
21 of 24 people found this review helpful.

This was an absolute great reference for many of the components I buy to upgrade my computers. It is not a technical reference, but if you need to buy any component for a computer, read this book. Unfortunately, at this point, this book is now outdated and pretty much useless, unless you want to buy older components. Tom should update this book once a year or so, which is about how fast the computer industry moves. There was really only one thing I didn't like about the book when I purchased it a while ago: Not many motherboard references for Socket 7 or Super 7. Tom, at that time at least, seemed to be stuck on Intel Pentiums. I like the AMD's because they perform well and don't cost an arm and a leg. If Tom were to update this book, I would definitely purchase it. You do not have to be a super computer expert to understand this book. The format is perfect and its always exciting to read Tom's Pick at the end of each chapter.

Editorial Review:

Tom's Hardware Guide was created to provide you with the inside scoop on attaining the ultimate in PC performance. Written by the originators of tomshardware.com, the Interenet's #1 source of new technology information and performance reviews. Millions of people rely on Tom's reviews and advice. Tom's no-holds-barred approach to the PC industry has made him into the premier technology industry guru. From Intel's boardroom to the individual at the corner computer store--they all look to Tom for information on the latest technology products.

Really practical 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I've seen lots of upgrade and repair books, but they were all full of tables of historical info and other stuff I didn't need. This book was great because it ran through practical things like the utilities to use in Windows to correct registry problems and disk errors. I now feel like I can solve most of the messes I get myself into with Windows. Thanks Faithe!

Tune Up Your PC 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The book is easy to understand and has excellent step-by-step procedures to follow so that you feel confident in what Faithe Wempen is instructing you to do.

She also gives you a variety of other possibilities when the step-by-step procedures may not work in your particular case. It's as if she has 'every base covered'.

I think a person, especially a beginner like myself, will definitely understand how to work on a PC after studying this book. It's also a very good reference book for beginners as well as those who are very knowledgeable about computers. This is a "MUST HAVE" book for any computer user.

Editorial Review:

Most of the problems that people have with their PCs are software-based and easily fixable,at little or no expense--if you know how! This book walks the Reader step-by-step through the same troubleshooting and correction processes that experts use when people pay them $50 per hour or more to work on the PCs. This book thoroughly covers the software side of PC troubleshooting, repair and maintenance, which is by far the most common side on which problems occur on the average PC.

If you want to fix computers, this is it. 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is the best book that you will find if you want to learn how to fix computers (including motherboard problems, harddrive problems, sound cards and Windows problems) or prepare for the A+ Exam. I found it very helpful in troubleshooting a some of my friends computers and it had information that was not included in many other computer troubleshooting books. In addition, I found the book was easy to understand, it imparted a lot of 'real-world' experience and had lots of examples. Lastly, I think it gave me a good foundation, not to mention some confidence, to pursue my MSCE certification. I strongly recommend this book and is well worth the money.

Editorial Review:

This book provides real-world coverage of PC troubleshooting and coverage of the topics required to pass the A+ PC technician exam. It shows readers how to become successful PC technicians by offering comprehensive coverage of both old and new technology and plenty of real-world applications. Chapter topics include A PC overview, basic electronics, the disassembly and assembly of the PC, microprocessors, RAM, motherboards, the expansion slots and cards, the case and power supply, the hard drive, the floppy drive and other removable media, the compact disk drive, the disk structure, tape drives and data protection, the video system, input devices, sound cards, serial ports and modems, parallel ports and printers, MS-DOS, Windows 3.XX, Windows 9X, Windows NT, family operating systems, and computers connected to a network. For future PC technicians—especially those preparing for the A+ Certification exam.

Great content for modders 4 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I think the last review is a bit harsh, but a one line review? I guess the reason why there isn't any "real" data in it is because the person hasn't actually read the book. this book was written by the guy at gideontech.com, 1 person from pcmods.com and 2 other people. They all have their own case mod website so they are pros at this. A lot of the things in the book are not elsewhere on the net and were written just for this book as far as I can tell. The book covers all sorts of mods including how to build your own case out of a metal gas can, developing your own electronic gadgets (mansfield), lighting mods you never thought about, and mini ITX goodness from Ed. There is a ton of mini-mods. Really its a very thorough book and you can't just "surf the web" and get as much good information so quickly or in such a nice "gift" package. If you already build competition level case mods then yes I wouldn't recommend it to you, but if you think modding is fun then its a good book for you.

Editorial Review:

Get four complete, do-it-yourself PC mod projects in one book! From a water-cooling aquarium to a neon light show to an outrageous casing to a functional one-touch LED screen, the projects show you, step-by-step, how to transform your ordinary computer into a one-of-a-kind mod. Helpful photos and diagrams are included.

28 of 29 people found this review helpful.

Preston Gralla and Que Publishing have done a great job updating and expanding "How to Expand & Upgrade PCs." In keeping with Que's fine tradition of using high-quality printed graphics, this new edition is beautifully illustrated and designed to make learning much more fun and easier to accomplish. The book explains in simple terms how major computer components and technologies work, how to handle computer equipment, what the latest technological advances are, and how everything works together to make computing happen!

Readers will learn what the basic computer components are, how to open up computers with the right tools, how to connect cables and set switches, how to install jumpers, power supplies, hard drives, CPU and memory chips, a variety of circuit boards, floppy drives, CD-ROM drives, DVD drives, Zip drives, tape drives, and modems. Readers will also learn how to hook-up USB port devices such as printers, digital cameras, scanners, other accessories, and improve over all system performance within the Windows Operating System environment.

This fully illustrated book is perfect for small businesses, classroom use in public and private schools, colleges, adult education courses, for beginners, and will also make a fine gift for the first-time computer buyer!

Editorial Review:

How to Expand and Upgrade PCs is a richly illustrated, full-color book focusing on upgrades and add-ons that any consumer level user can make to their PC. Instead of simply reading like a manual, this book brings together all of the pre-purchase, installation, and usage issues a user faces. Each chapter looks at determining the type of upgrade needed, the tools and other requirements for installation, and using the hardware once it's installed.. Coverage includes DVDs, digital cameras, scanners, removable drives, USB scanners, firewall devices, palmtop devices, home wireless networks and more.

unsure how helpful it will be 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Two things about this book: Firstly it is actually a reprint of a FAQ that is available for download or viewing on a website, and secondly unless you actually have a problem it's quite hard to tell wether or not it will help. I have had a couple of the problems that are mentioned in this book and their advice is spot on so it may be safe to assume that they do actually know what they are talking about with regards to other problems. Books such as this are quite hard to rate as problems come up infrequently and each problem seems to have it's own unique features so a general guide may only get you out of trouble fifty percent of the time. That said this company is quite legendary when it comes to fixing Mac's so the book certainly has potential to be helpful if you do encounter standard problems. It would also save you hunting around for that A4 printout of the FAQ and it's quite a nice pocket sized reference book and a high quality printing.
If you want a hard copy and aren't able to print this off the website then certainly buy this book.

Editorial Review:

Tekserver has long provided its customers with a free "Frequently Asked Questions" document. We recently discovered this FAQ sheet and realized that-- like New York itself-- it was too good to leave just for the New Yorkers. With the help of Tekserve, we turned this FAQ sheet into the Macintosh Troubleshooting Pocket Guide. The Macintosh Troubleshooting Pocket Guide covers the most common user hardware and software trouble, from disks stuck in drives to lost files. It's not just a book for Mac OS X (although it includes tips for OS X and Jaguar, the latest release), it's for anyone who owns a Mac of any type-- there are software tips going back as far as OS 6. The Macintosh Troubleshooting Pocket Guide distills the answers to the urgent questions that Tekserve's employee's answer every week into a handy guide that fits in your back pocket or alongside your keyboard.
