Helpful information but on the verge of being dated 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book is a mix of useful and dated information. Useful are the profiles of others who have broken into the business and the section on hardware and tools. The book has a 1995 publication date so the section on software comes under the "dated" heading. Windows 3.1 and DOS coverage are virtually useless. And don't bother to look for Internet sources-they are not there. To sum up, as long as the reader is willing to ignore the out of date items he may be able to get some use out of this title. Otherwise, wait for an update.

Not just for beginners... 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I do not consider myself a beginner to PCs, but I still found this to be a great book. The chapter on printers, a very under represented technology in books, makes it worth the price. It is really easy to read, but not so easy as to be talking down to you. This would be a good book to read if you are interested in how that box on your desk works or if, for once, you'd like to know what that techie at work is talking about. Good read!

All the details, but in plain language 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I am a newbie to computers, but I want to learn how they work. This book explains the details of how a PC works and much of what I should do when it doesn't. Mr. Gilster explains things in a no-nonsense, clear way that doesn't try to blow me away with all of the technical jargon. He obviously knows his stuff and how to explain it to someone like me. Great book for anyone who wants to move past the newbie level!

Editorial Review:

Ideal for PC owners looking for an accessible, easy-to-follow reference, this beginner's guide to PC hardware offers expert advice on every component--processors, motherboards, memory, BIOS, CD-ROM and DVD drives, video cards, and much more. You'll also get details on external devices, including monitors, printers, keyboards, and modems. The book covers both Intel and non-Intel CPUs and USB and AGP ports.

Excellent book, well written in easy to understand language.
This book makes an excellent desktop reference for the computer technician.
I like how Tom Sheldon divides the different areas of upgrading a computer into parts and chapters, each chapter begins with an overview and ends with a summary. Instead of wading through pages of material, you can go to the specific chapter that you need.
Also I like how Tom Sheldon includes lots of illustrations, step by step instructions, and online resources to save you hours of research. To top it off,he even includes a web address for updates to the book.
If you're an HP owner and want to upgrade or just know more about your computer then this book is all you need.

A Great Instructional Guide On Upgrading And Reparing PCs ! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 12 people found this review helpful.

All i can say about this book is it is a wonderful guide. It is filled with large pictures and easy step by step instructions. Great for a beginner or a experienced person. I recommend this book to everyone. A good first book for people interested in upgrading or building their own PC.

Outdated, bad advice, nice pictures however 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book thinking it might make a good companion text for an Adult-ed course I am developing. The technical advice it contains is out-of-date and I'm not sure it ever made sense in the first place. It has beautiful illustrations for things like "how to upgrade your monitor" (answer: "buy a new one"). I give the book two stars because the pictures are so pretty, but if you have a Pentium II with 32 Meg of RAM running Windows ME you don't want to upgrade, you want to replace it with a new computer. A nicely illustrated book with sensible advice like "donate your old computer to charity" or "take it the dump" wouldn't be worth the price of this book, but at least it would correct.

Editorial Review:

Discover how easy it can be to get the most out of your PC! High-quality color photographs and extremely easy-to-follow text make this an ideal resource for upgrading, repairing and building your own computer. This informative visual guide will show you how to improve the performance of your current system and use peripherals including DVDs, scanners, digital cameras, scanners, and much more.

Editorial Review:

Multifunction devices combine the essentials of a fax machine, printer, scanner, and copier into one peripheral for small and home offices. As the market for this equipment grows, the need for skilled repair and maintenance increases. Unfortunately the service documentation supplied by the manufacturers is completely inadequate making the repair jobs even harder and more expensive. Marvin Hobbs teaches you how multifunction peripherals work in theory and in practice with lots of hands-on examples and important troubleshooting and repair tips you don't want to miss.

This book fills a gap in the literature, and will be a welcome addition to the library of any technician or do-it-yourselfer.

Written by a knowledgeable practitioner with inside industry information
Fully covers the troubleshooting and repair of multifunction peripherals
A must-have instructional and reference title for anyone who works with computer peripherals!

Include a lot of out-of-dated information 2 out of 5 stars.
16 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Even though this is the 4th edition and was just published this January, I still found there are a lot of out-of-dated information in this book. The author has referred a lot on the very old system, such as 8086, 80286... but give very little information about the new systems. For example, the author even didn't mention the use of DIMMS in the memory chapter but solely mentioned EDOs or previously released memory.

A Book Worth the Money 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

A generally useful text that is like a supplement to this series' Complete Guide to Upgrade and Repair, and though it rates a general five stars, in my opinion, it is more like a slightly outdated manual for the rapidly advancing industry. I don't know how any large books can keep up with this field, because by the time they are written and published most of the equipment they cover will be outdated. This is like a background text and you have to go to the web sites to view the latest information and changes. You have to do your own work, at some point, and can't have it spoon-fed to you. I'd recommend the book for this price and don't agree with the fellow who gave it two stars, which is a very harsh rating and speaks of superiority in a way. All of us regular guys will find the book useful.

Editorial Review:
