  • Master Microsoft Office. From little-known right-click wonders to backing up the unbackable to automating data entry, you'll find workarounds for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Wrassle with hardware--and win! Learn to wake up your DSL, tame your notebook, shut up your PC's fan, save your data, and save paper.
  • Internet knots untied! Shake up IE, stop Flash, outsmart defaults, control Favorites, add the Google toolbar to Netscape, and more.

Should be called "A novice look at the PC" 1 out of 5 stars.
15 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I have two years hands on experience with pc's and win-95. I am used to my employers computer tech entering and saying something like '16 mb of ram is more than enough for this office and adding more would not speed up things or prevent the need to reboot every 3 hours' Then I ask "well why does the same computer you have with 128 mb run faster"? 'well thats just luck'. So I decided to buy a book to explain. I think Peter Norton is the PC tech I have been talking to. The book gives a BASIC DESCRIPTION of the guts of the PC but does not explain in detail the reason you want one upgrade over another and it certainly does not tell you how to do something in enough detail to make it a smooth install. For example what if you change EDO chips and get an error? Just the possibility of that occuring should stop some novices from screwing up there system and finding a tech to perform the install for them. No, this book is not a guide. It provides just enough info for the novice user to screw up his/her computer. BEWARE!!!!! By the way when the tech left the co. and we installed 64 mb of ram the computers ability to receive info from the server doubled and the units quit crashing every 4 hours with lack of resources warnings.

Editorial Review:

Peter Norton's Guide to Upgrading and Repairing PCs provides expert advice using a friendly, step-by-step approach. Understand how each component of your PC system functions and why earlier models and technologies can often prove to be bottlenecks in your day-to-day work. Learn about the new technologies, such as MMX-equipped Pentium IIs, DVD, USB, and FireWire, and determine whether each spells death or renewal for your aging PC and existing peripherals. Each chapter begins with an overview that sets forth the underlying technology. Chapters outline the pros and cons of alternative upgrade options without overlooking the costs, future prospects, and timeline for a best buy, and typically end with step-by-step installation and troubleshooting procedures. In addition, Peter's Principles, Upgrade Advice, Buying Tips, Compatibility Notes, and other icons make it easy to find exactly what you need.

What's the Most That Could Upgrade 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Make existing capabilities better by adding disk-caching software and more RAM, defragmenting the hard disk, doubling disk storage capacity for compressing the hard disk, restarting your system daily, and upgrading to the latest version, especially with a computer less than two years old. Install and plug in to a surge suppressor as the first upgrade. Add a math coprocessor to run complex spreadsheets and math-intensive programs such as computer-aided design. Save money by replacing hardware: only hardware technicians know how to repair most PC hardware devices. Make repairs by beginning with the cheapest, easiest fix and working to the hardest and most costly. Think about basic physics for how computers work, and the problem area may show up. Find an area user technical support group for common fixes to common mistakes. These are some of the many clearly illustrated and reader-friendly comments author Kris A. Jamsa shares in RESCUED BY UPGRADING YOUR PC. His book stands out in a crowd, sharing concerns and information with Wayne N. Kawamoto's BUILD, UPGRADE AND REPAIR YOUR PC NETWORK ON A SHOESTRING BUDGET, Mark Minasi's THE COMPLETE PC UPGRADE AND MAINTENANCE GUIDE, and Aubrey Pilgrim's UPGRADE AND REPAIR YOUR PC.

Editorial Review:

Now in it's 4th edition by best selling author Kris Jamsa, Rescued by Upgrading Your PC is a must-have resource for anyone who owns a personal computer or notebook PC. Step-by-step instructions make PC hardware and software upgrading and maintenance easy! Filled with full color illustrations, this edition helps readers take control of their own hardware and software installations. Each lesson is very detailed, requiring only 5-10 minutes of time to complete and will save you money!
