Editorial Review:

Are you making reliable backups and performing regular maintenance on your Mac? Too few Mac users take the time to do so, and they regret it when something goes wrong. That's where Macintosh expert Joe Kissell can help. You'll learn how to keep your Mac running smoothly with a set of daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly tasks, plus get advice on preparing for Mac OS X updates. You'll also find out how to monitor your Mac to detect problems early and where to turn if trouble raises its ugly head.

But the most important aspect of maintenance is a rock-solid backup strategy that protects all your important data in the event of catastrophe. To that end, Joe provides an at-a-glance comparison of different strategies, explains the pros and cons of each type of media, and helps you pick the best backup program for your needs. You'll find time-tested recommendations that help you set up, test, and maintain your backups, complete with instructions on how to restore after a crash. Important lessons you'll learn along the way include the utility of having both a duplicate and an archive, the necessity of testing backups, and the importance of offsite backups.

In this book you'll find the answers to questions like these:
  • When is my Mac likely to have trouble?
  • How can I find out which unnecessary files are taking up space on my disk?
  • Should I defragment my hard disk and repair permissions regularly?
  • What is the best backup software and hardware?
  • How can I make sure I can restore from my backups?

A Computer Was Built! 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This was one of the 'how to' books I bought for my husband for his birthday. He had been remarking how he was tempted to build his own computer! Just last night he said he was ready to put his newly built computer in a permanent place - thanks due to several times referring to these books and got the answers he needed! He was glad to cross compare what one book said and how another might reword the same topic. Bottom line: A Computer Was Built!

Incredible book for passing the A+ exam 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book as a study guide for the A+ exam. This year, when i took the exams, i took the hardware in the linear format and scored a 895 (out of 900) and took the os exam in the adaptive format and scored a 1290 (out of 1300). If you want to ace the A+, GET THIS BOOK.

Editorial Review:

Upgrading and Repairing PCs, A+ Certification Study Guide is a hands-on learning book. Scott takes the readers through the test objectives one by one. The most frequently missed questions are pointed out and explained with greater detail than easier questions need. Plain English! Spend your time learning--not deciphering bad writing! Just the essentials--Scott covers the essentials that you'll need to pass the test and point you where to go for more information. Frequent study reminders throughout help you focus and remember the core concepts for the exam - and not the not-so-necessary details. Also included are exams that will cover the topics that you'll be tested on AND we'll ask them in the manner they'll be asked on the test.

A+ Guide to managing & Maintaining Your PC 2nd Edition 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Good book, but outdated. Third Edition is out, am waiting to see it

Needs updating and editing 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Book needs editing. What is the definition of a transformer? Depends on where you look in the book. Doesn't mention USB or Firewire. Stick with Scott Mueller's book Upgrading and Repairing PC's.

Down to basics 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This lab manual goes hand in hand with the Enhanced A+ Guide To Managing & Maintaining Your PC by Jean Andrews. The information is basic enough for a beginner to delve into the mysteries of the computer's innards. I'm currently using it in a college class as a back up to the text and find it very informative and helpful.

Editorial Review:

This title contains all of the material necessary to prepare you for the new A+ exam. The book goes beyond simple exam preparation, however, and enables you to develop skills required to become a proficient PC support technician.
