Padding at its worst. 1 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Though it's listed at 208 pages, my copy was only 168 pages long; of which, 50 were devoted to a list of training programs. No effort was made to rank the programs by quality or respect within the industry. If a book is padded at least it should be comprehensive, but the list of computer magazine and their URLs later in the book didn't even include PC Magazine! The section on computer repair in Paul and Sarah Edwards' "The Best Home Businesses for the 21st Century" contained at least as much real information as this book and it's only 7 pages long. I suspect this book was written and published for a quick buck and I intend to avoid this author and publisher in the future. If someone knows of a truly useful book on this subject I would be grateful to hear of it.

Editorial Review:

The computer field has everything: Cutting-edge excitement. Lots of entry-level jobs. High salaries-increasing sharply as you move up. And a rosy future. This book gives you all the basic information you need to break into the field as a computer technician: the hottest positions and how to get them...where to find the training and financing...how to land a job- and MAKE A SUCCESS OF IT.

For those looking for the overall Hardware book this is it. 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

In over 15 years of I work I am always looking for new material and books relating to the latest technology both hardware and software.

This is the first time I have looked at the Hardware Bible and as a Computer Technical Instructor this book has already come in handy for a couple of A+ classes I am teaching.

While the book is not written to any specific exam, I found that is would definitely help with the A+ and CST exams. The author's extensive hardware knowledge is evident throughout the book.

One thing that impressed me throughout the book was the author not only gives detailed information about the most current technology, but also gives you a firm background on older technologies as well.

While the book is the "Hardware" bible, there is far more than just hardware information, you'll also find TCP/IP and the internet, as well as memory management included in the overall coverage.

I found this to be a fairly complete text to work with. You can also register online and find both the 5th and 6th editions available. About the only thing that wasn't included was a cd with hardware utilities, but looking at what you do get this is a minor drawback. Overall this book is a certainly worth the look.

Editorial Review:

The Winn L. Rosch Hardware Bible provides a background on how things work, puts competing technologies, standards, and products in perspective, and serves as a reference that provides quick answers for common computer and technology questions. It functions as a buying guide, telling not only what to buy, but why. It also lays the foundation for upgrading or repairing a computer, but stops short of the step-by-step mechanics of the process. The chief purpose of the Hardware Bible remains educational. Some new features in this edition include rewritable DVD technology as well as Blu-ray Discs, wireless networking including 802.11a and 802.11b, Bluetooth wireless communications, and extended coverage of digital cameras, scanners, and telecommunications...and much more!

Easy to use at a great price! 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 21 people found this review helpful.

Without a doubt, the best type of troubleshooting book I've seen. Colorful, easy to use, and has great tips on all kinds of PC disasters, major and minor. I have never seen a book quite like this -- there are flow charts so that you can work your way through a problem yourself, and there are also tips which give you great ideas on how to understand and fix other PC problems. Great value for less than $20.

This is apparently part of a new series -- I've ordered the books on Excel and Access. Really great idea for a book series, I hope there will be more of them to come. If you're looking to become more computer savvy these books will help you quickly!

Editorial Review:

Troubleshooting Your PC, Second Edition provides fast answers to problems that can arise when using a Microsoft Windows XP-based PC. The book explains how to use the Microsoft Windows XP operating system to troubleshoot PC crashes, screen flaws, keyboard and mouse errors, glitches in floppy disk drives and CD-ROM drives, and many other hardware problems. Each section features a diagnostic chart with clear, step-by-step solutions to try right away, plus alternate solutions to try if the problem is more complex. Screen images illustrate what users see on their computer as they work through the steps.

Excellent Book 5 out of 5 stars.
25 of 30 people found this review helpful.

Agreeing with the previous review 100%. This is an excellent book, and I can lift it over my head, so it won't be such a pain in the butt to drag around with me. At around 800 pages, it's still a hefty reference, but a little more manageable than some of the bigger books out there. The language is plain. The organization is sensible, and I appreciate the many genericized diagrams in addition to photos. Photos are nice, but the diagrams make it easier for me to figure out what I'm looking at from machine to machine. I wish more hardware books were put together like this one.

Is It Safe?

PROTECTING YOUR COMPUTER, YOUR BUSINESS, AND YOURSELF ONLINE

IDENTITY THEFT. DATA THEFT. INTERNET FRAUD. ONLINE

SURVEILLANCE. EMAIL SCAMS.

Hacks, attacks, and viruses. The Internet is a dangerous place. In years past, you could protect your computer from malicious activity by installing an antivirus program and activating a firewall utility. Unfortunately, that’s no longer good enough; the Internet has become a much darker place, plagued not only by rogue software but also by dangerous criminals and shadowy government agencies. Is It Safe? addresses the new generation of security threat. It presents information about each type of threat and then discusses ways to minimize and recover from those threats. Is It Safe? differs from other security books by focusing more on the social aspects of online security than purely the technical aspects. Yes, this book still covers topics such as antivirus programs and spam blockers, but it recognizes that today’s online security issues are more behavioral in nature–phishing schemes, email scams, and the like.

Are you being scammed? Learn how to spot the newest and most insidious computer security threats–fraudulent retailers, eBay scammers, online con artists, and the like.

Is your identity safe? Avoid being one of the nine million Americans each year who have their identities stolen. Today’s real Internet threats aren’t viruses and spam. Today’s real threat are thieves who steal your identity, rack up thousands on your credit card, open businesses under your name, commit crimes, and forever damage your reputation!

Is Big Brother watching? Get the scoop on online tracking and surveillance. We examine just who might be tracking your online activities and why.

Is your employer watching you? How to tell when you’re being monitored; and how to determine what is acceptable and what isn’t.

Michael Miller has written more than 80 nonfiction books over the past two decades. His best-selling books include Que’s YouTube 4 You, Googlepedia: The Ultimate Google Resource, iPodpedia: The Ultimate iPod and iTunes Resource, and Absolute Beginner’s Guide to Computer Basics. He has established a reputation for clearly explaining technical topics to nontechnical readers and for offering useful real-world advice about complicated topics.

Worth Double the Money 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 21 people found this review helpful.

This book is well worth the money, since it not only told me more about my BIOS, it did a more thorough job of explaining some of the fundamentals of hardware for me than did some of my A+ certification books, as well as the half-dozen tomes on "Upgrading and Repairing" of various ilk. Introducing some of the finer points, going over things for those with older PC's, as well as the more recent technological improvements, this book is worth twice the price, but don't tell the publisher and get it at a bargain price. The BIOS is not as complicated a creature as it at first appears to be, and this book will help anyone, from novice to an upper/intermediate user, fix common problems, as well as understand the hardware in their computer better than they would have thought possible, in plain language.

The most authoritative book I've ever owned or read 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I've taken several technical support certification courses, and this was the textbook I used in half of them. Mark Minasi is an excellent writer who is able to "dumb down" all the minute details and translates very well the technical jargon of the trade. Minasi is also the writer of several Windows 2000 books which I've also read, and I've taken a fondness for his ability to start really big and progress quickly into smaller details without ever losing my interest or attention.

The chapters on hardware installation and introduction to networks are the best written and most authoritative material I've used to learn the subtle aspects of TCP/IP, ethernet, and token/bus ring topologies. Also, the chapters on computer upgrading and "building a dream computer from scratch" are well laid-out and detailed for avid geeks like me who like to destroy and build machines from scrap piles. I guess the best thing to say about this book is that it fostered an even deeper interest in computers than I had before reading.

One of the best perks of this book is that there is a moderate balance of graphics, charts and diagrams to go with his text. There is hardly anything intimidating about his presentation; novice and intermediate learners will have no problem getting to grasp every topic in this book. The twelfth edition also makes several revisions, particularly with misstated bandwidth numbers for Firewire and USB in the last edition). I haven't had a chance to test out the CDROMs, but several of my peers have recommended the video installation procedures, where Minasi goes over all the basics (like how to ground yourself properly, installing master/slave IDE devices, setting up SCSI cards, etc.)

I don't like giving heavily-biased support for any book, product or service, but in all honesty, this is by far the best and most authoritative source I've ever used to fix any hardware-related issue with a computer. There is no topic I can think of that doesn't get covered, and he throws in a little history and conceptual technology as well to spur more interest in the future technology.

In conclusion, the book is well worth the price, and I highly doubt most beginning and intermediate-level IT people will ever need to go beyond this edition as a reference source.

Editorial Review:

This extensively revised and updated 12th edition of the best-selling guide to PC upgrading and maintenance includes updated information on memory, modems, sound boards, disk drives, printing problems, operating system upgrades, video capture, digital audio, networking, combo printers, vendor guides, memory, and more.

--Written in a friendly, easy-to-follow style, the book provides essential background and conceptual information that teaches readers how computers work.

--Loaded with more than 1,600 pages of hardcore information, this is the one book no professional, student, or serious home user can afford to be without!

    Editorial Review:

Whether you're frustrated with current PC offerings (and their inflated prices) or are simply looking for a cool project to take on, building a computer from the ground up using off-the-shelf parts can offer significant advantages. In these pages, computer dudes Darrel Wayne Creacy and Carlito Vicencio outline those advantages and then show you how to build the computer of your dreams.

The pair begins by explaining what components make up a PC and what you need to think about when selecting those components, before helping you determine your needs and suggesting various configurations to fit those uses. Breaking the process down into its simplest terms, the authors provide component lists for a number of different PC setups: for students, home users, multimedia/home-theater enthusiasts, high-end graphic/video/audio producers, and more.

Using plain language and plenty of visual and instructional aids--photos, illustrations, diagrams, step-by-step directions, and more--the authors ensure that even someone (like you!) who knows nothing about technology can build the perfect PC!

On a more personal note, the authors are donating a percentage of their income from this book to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation–to thank all the women in their lives who have supported them and battled the disease. For more information about BCRF, please visit http://www.bcrfcure.org/.
