It's money in my pocket, and yours too. 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm an entrepreneur, I'm not an administrator. Insurance has always been an irksome expensive time-consuming necessity, and dealing with it took me away from running my business. Once I read this book, I realized that I had an opportunity to improve my company bottom line AND improve the lives and compensation of my employees. I now have a compensation package that is very difficult to compete with, and don't have to worry so much about having my talent stolen away.

New thoughts for solving and old problem. 5 out of 5 stars.

The book was a great read. It finally answers the old question, "How to control the rising cost of healthcare without lowering benefits." It should be read by both employers as well as employees so the mind set towards healthcare in this country can change for the better.

Editorial Review:

We are all excellent consumers. We collectively have no problem clearly identifying what we want, how we want it and when the price is right. We make our educated presence known in almost every marketplace except one— healthcare. Managed care and its first dollar benefits have created a problem and the solution is … consumer directed healthcare. We can fix our system of healthcare and your second largest business expense, behind payroll, if we stop buying health plans and start buying health insurance.

Especially Helpful Resource for Home Builders 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

While helpful for all contractors, this book is especially good for home builders whose accounting needs are more complex. The book does a good job of the steps to take in QuickBooks. There is a chapter detailing how to use WIP accounts during construction and how to record the ultimate sale of the home. However, some of it is too complex for smaller contractors. Overall, a very useful resource!

Easy to follow instructions. Well written to suit the contractor's needs. I was able to get started with the basics without spending hundreds for the class.

Very Useful Information and Strategies 4 out of 5 stars.

This was a great book to get started with QB... It really opened up some of the not so obvious capabilities of the program. Would love it if they would come out with the *next* level ie. more complex accounting that QB can handle. Great educational tool... a must have if you are new to QB.

Good book for PHP beginner 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I've found this book very useful for a PHP beginner as me. I could make the whole website working with Dreamweaver MX 2004, PHP5 and MySQL 4x on my local machine and test it on a webserver using PHP4x and MySQL 3x.

Hints to work with this book:

ON YOUR LOCAL MACHINE:
1. Do not create password for MySQL
2. When creating Database Connection in Dreamweaver, type in the username as root, but do not type the password.
3. For Admin page, if you get an error, use the error handler shown on page 300, 301 to handle it.

ON A WEBSERVER:
Go through pages and specify host, MySQL username and password (don't miss page 254).

I have enjoyed the book very much.

Editorial Review:

This book is all about making dynamic PHP web sites with Dreamweaver MX . It covers PHP, enough to get the reader up to speed with the technology, and how to use Dreamweaver MX to produce PHP code quickly and efficiently. It's not intended to be a comprehesive PHP reference. It also covers site design and databases and SQL. It uses an example project, a hotel reservation system, that is built up through the chapters to demonstrate the concepts explained .

Missed my target 3 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I really thought the book would be more geared to professional photographers and workflow, etc. with regard to digital photos. Much more space was spent on website building, which I would have expected from a website book, not a book titled as a digital photographer's guide. Did I get $30 worth of information? Probably, but I would have liked more information on digital workflow, file management, professional lab tips, etc. as a professional photographer making the move from film to digital.

Editorial Review:

If you've ever been overwhelmed by the complexities of optimizing images for output, this results-oriented guide will clear everything up. Photo Finish: The Digital Photographer's Guide to Printing, Showing, and Selling Images shows you how to attain the best possible output for any medium. Digital imaging experts Jon Canfield and Tim Grey combine practical technical information with inspiring examples to teach you how to: get consistently great prints, mount and frame your work, create compelling photo slideshows, build attention-grabbing photo websites, get your work shown in exhibitions and galleries, and sell your images online. While other books focus on one aspect of output, this comprehensive guide covers all the ways you can share your images.

Excellent but necessarily incomplete 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Okay, this is a little tough to explain. This is an EXCELLENT guide for people who need to buy a new home computer or laptop. But it by itself will not be enough to guide those people through the process smoothly.

There are two considerable strengths to this guide. First of all, it demystifies all the jargon and obscure terminology, and does a commendable job doing it. Second, Dan Gookin's advice to think about SOFTWARE primarily and not HARDWARE or PRICE when one is buying is worth its weight in gold. (The fact that brand names are scarcely used in this book is a strength and not a weakness, I believe, and fits in with Mr. Gookin's approach.) And for people who think "For Dummies" guides have too much clowning around, there is very little of it here, and it is not intrusive.

Having said all of these nice things, the book is occasionally minimal on key information. It could be argued that to make this guide complete, the author would have had to have written an 800-page book. In any case, this book alone won't get you through the computer-buying process comfortably. You should supplement the book with a friend who is moderately or heavily tech savvy.

In short, this is a great beginning and I honestly think it would be foolish for a computer beginner to buy a new machine without having read this very price-friendly work. But that reading will have to be supplemented by a friend or work colleague in the know about personal computers.

Editorial Review:

  • Realizing that purchasing a computer is a significant investment, beloved author Dan Gookin assists readers in finding a tailor-made computer that suits specific needs while also offering longevity
  • Delivers all the know-how in an understandable, enjoyable, friendly style so readers don't feel overwhelmed by all the choices they'll face when buying a computer
  • Walks readers step by step through all the new developments: CD burner/DVD combo drives, processor upgrades, flat panel displays, new modem and networking options, new peripherals, and more
  • An essential reference for first-time computer buyers looking to make a wise purchase, and for anyone looking to get an additional computer

Editorial Review:

Whether you are using Windows Forms to build rich-client business applications, or the ASP.NET 2.0 framework to build powerful web applications or web services, the use of well-designed graphics will greatly enhance their usability, impact, and visual appeal. This book provides a comprehensive guide to the use of graphics in .NET applications and aims to provide you with all the information you need to build effective custom controls.

The opening section of the book investigates the .NET Framework classes that implement graphics. It covers all of the classes, methods, and techniques needed to create, manipulate, and display precise graphics in a form, a page being sent to a printer, or an image.

On this foundation, the second section describes how to design and build effective custom controls for use in a business environment. Topics covered include building composite controls, implementing keyboard navigation, and enhancing design-time support.

The final section of the book explores the use of GDI+ and ASP.NET to build custom controls that can provide reusable, GUI components for web projects, and to deliver customized graphics over the Internet.

Editorial Review:

Most dictionaries are updated every 10 to 20 years. Not this one. Each day Harry Newton adds the newest words, and expands and improves definitions of old words. This edition is current as of February 2003, with over 1,350 new terms defined since the last edition.

Newton's Telecom Dictionary is the world's favorite reference book on telecom, data communications, networking, computing, and the Internet, with sales exceeding 600,000 copies. With over 21,000 definitions the 19th edition weighs in at over four times larger than any other telecom and IT dictionary, and includes wireless, broadband, intranet, e-commerce, and IT terms.

Harry Newton deliberately wrote it not as a technical book, but as a business book. Newton explains technical concepts in non-technical language that anyone in business can understand. This has made the book an essential reference tool to anyone writing or reading sales proposals or managing network and telecom systems and services.

Says Harry, "I wrote this book for those of us new (and old) to the world's most exciting industry. That's what my publishers would have me say. But, I really wrote the book for myself. I simply want to keep up. Defining a term is the best way I know of understanding it. The good news is I'm not an engineer; I can't write incomprehensible technical explanations. I can write explanations business people (like me) will understand. Some of my definitions are short. Some are long. Many are mini-tutorials. My definitions of a term explain how it's used, its benefits, its pluses, and its minuses. Many companies give my dictionary to all their new people. Salespeople put my definitions into customer proposals. Management uses it to feign understanding of technical issues. Lawyers use it in court. (God help us.)"

Includes 4 BONUS Sections:

-201 of the BEST MONEY SAVING TIPS
Harry Newton's favorite ways to save on telecom, PC, and travel.
-WHY IS IT SO HARD TO BUY?
Insights for managers on the importance of putting customers first.
-THE NEW WORLD OF TELECOM
What made 2002 difficult as well as what we can expect in 2003
-DISASTER RECOVERY PLANNING
How to protect your computing and telecom resources.

Good Overview 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The author of this book gives a good overview of the major chess programs. Not owning any chess software, I was a little confused as with some of his discriptions of the catagories of chess software. I did find that his summaries were otherwise clear and help significantly in choosing programs for myself (novice chess player). None of the descriptions were overly lengthy or technical and the tables were moderately helpful. As of this date, I believe this is your only choice for a comprehensive critical summary of chess software, so if this is what you are looking for, this book will start you in the right direction.

Editorial Review:

Chess Software Sourcebook is the is the first book to focus exclusively on the latest chess-related computer programs. Several chapters review in detail the various types of software available, as well as the pros and cons of commercial programs in each category. Feature comparison tables help you decide which software best matches your specific needs, and screen shots show the graphical interface for each program. Playing live chess over the Internet (including its addictive tendencies!) is also discussed. Other chapters cover opening study, computer handicapping, game analysis, and time-saving tips so you can get the most out of the software you own or plan to purchase.
