This is a useful book for any first time pocket pc user, like me. The level is just right, neither too technical nor too simple, and after going through it I feel like an expert user. What more could you ask? If you are thinking of buying this book, you should know that the illustrations and examples mainly reference the HP Jornada, there is definately an HP focus. However, even though I'm an iPAQ user, the HP focus took very little away from my experience with this book. The author is very careful to point out differences between HP and other platforms.

The authors begin with a tour of the Google Android phone, showing how to use each of its essential calling and voicemail features. Next, they turn to Google Android's built-in applications, showing how to work with contacts; use the local calendar to coordinate your activities with others; take pictures; use your phone as a personal media player; and more. Google on the Go includes easy-to-understand coverage of Google Android's essential Internet features, from web browsing and Gmail email to the Google Application Suite. Users will even learn how to add additional programs to their phones. The book concludes with a full chapter of easy, plain-English troubleshooting steps for non-technical users, as well as a brief introduction to advanced topics such as customization.

this book is not current - Updated Revision Needed Now 3 out of 5 stars.
25 of 27 people found this review helpful.

While I enjoyed the book and found much of the information informative, I was also disapointed that it's focus is on the 3100,3600,3700,3800 series and the MicroSoft CE 2002 operating system. The 3870 is the latest model referenced and it was released 11/15/2001, almost two years ago. Alot of changes have happened and this book is not current.

I have just been introduced to the iPAQ world with a 5555 and MS CE 2003. Most of the CE 2003 Operating System is the same (in appearence) as CE 2003. After reading the HP users manual, which I found sparce, I purchased this book partly for configuration information of WiFi email (which is a major bullet on the cover) and troubleshooting.

I found the book's information on configuration of WiFi email to be basic, almost the same at the HP manual, and there was little information to deal with setup problems that do arise. There are only 2 pages devoted out of 365 that deal with troubleshooting...

Recommended for the intermediate developer 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I bought this along with Tiffany and Tacke. My development project involves several PocketPC's working in a wireless networked data management environment. For my purposes Tiffany was a throw away because he never gets beyond the basic Access and ADO subjects. Tacke provides details of his sample SQLCE application. Gratton is most useful because he writes to the intermediate level, provides insight on technology and architecture, teaches the methods of using/creating key features, and doesn't waste time and patience. I found him pulling up short only on the topic of customization for merge conflict resolution, but this is probably covered in SQL Server docs. His discussion on XML, SOAP and .NET gives a valuable heads-up on Web services. Grattan is a great starting point for the serious enterprise developer.

Takes you alot further than Microsoft... 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a really good book for trying to understand the bewildering array of tools needing to come together to develop in eVB for the PocketPC. Nick's projects examples are more robust and more correct examples of how to write code for eVB than the Microsoft examples. Most of the explanations I have read so far in this book (I just got it last night) were just the right medicine I needed to make the next part of the project come together. What I really like about this book is that its really to the point of what does it take to make the application work. From where to get the correct software updates (SDK's, SSCE, etc), how to setup the project, how to use the controls, and enough working example of code interacting with control and libraries to make it all come together. The author doesnt spew out conceptual market buzz fluff, he gets you to code that works quickly. The treatment of SQL Server CE was worth the price of the book. ... Definitely a keeper !

Discovering the Zire 5 out of 5 stars.
90 of 101 people found this review helpful.

The Palm Zire is the workhorse of PDAs, It comes with two MB of memory amd can display up to fifteen shades of gray; and it is gloriously inexpensive. For many of us the Zire is all that is needed, and then some. (I have a few thousand entries on mine, plus some third-party applications, plus a book of poetry - Billy Collins, "Nine Horses"), and so far have used only about half the available memory.

The Zire is also delightfully simple to use. In order to realize its full capabilities, however, some help is needed; and that is where this book comes in. Written with admirable clarity and refreshing humor, "How to do Everything with your Zire Handheld" is the complete guide to the Zire. It explains the basics and much, much more. I regard it as essential reading for anyone with a Zire. It has helped me immensely. I have no doubt that it will help others.

In short, if you have a Zire, trust me: you need this book. Both informative and entertaining, "How to do Everything with your Zire Handheld"is a superb exploration of the humble Zire's extraordinary abilities. Until I read it, I had no idea that the Zire could do so much so well. It made me realize that the Zire is even more of a bargain that I had thought.

    Editorial Review:

This friendly, solutions-oriented guide is filled with step-by-step examples that illustrate how to set up and navigate your Zire, and make the most of the hardware, built-in applications, and third-party tools. Each chapter begins with the specific how-to topics that will be covered. Within the chapter, each topic is accompanied by a solid, easy-to-follow walkthrough of the process.

    Editorial Review:

This practical book provides the concepts and code you need to develop software with Android, the open-source platform for cell phones and mobile devices that's generating enthusiasm across the industry. Based on the Linux operating system and developed by Google and the Open Handset Alliance, Android has the potential to unite a fragmented mobile market. Android Application Development introduces this programming environment, and offers you a complete working example that demonstrates Android architectural features and APIs. With this book, you will:
    • Get a complete introduction to the Android programming environment, architecture, and tools
    • Build a modular application, beginning with a core module that serves to launch modules added in subsequent chapters
    • Learn the concepts and architecture of a specific feature set, including views, maps, location-based services, persistent data storage, 2D and 3D graphics, media services, telephony services, and messaging
    • Use ready-to-run example code that implements each feature
    • Delve into advanced topics, such as security, custom views, performance analysis, and internationalization

The book is a natural complement to the existing Android documentation provided by Google. Whether you want to develop a commercial application for mobile devices, or just want to create a mobile mashup for personal use, Android Application Development demonstrates how you can design, build, and test applications for the new mobile market.
