Use the manual and the internet instead 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

A book such as Damon Brown's The Pocket Idiot's Guide to the iPhone can really only have two possible purposes: to give a potential user information to help them decide whether and what to buy, and/or to provide information to a user that goes beyond the manual in helping them to make the most of a gadget. Unfortunately, this book succeeds in neither of these goals.

The closest Mr. Brown comes to discussing whether one should buy the iPhone is a small suggestion that it might not hurt to wait to buy it until some of the inevitable first-round kinks are worked out. Other than that, he mostly spends his words raving about how utterly cool the iPhone is and how no one could possibly not want it. He ignores such basic and essential information as the fact that you must send your iPhone in for servicing in order to replace the battery, something that users might want to know before deciding whether to plunk down their money.

As for providing additional information to users, well, let's just say I did a quick comparison of this book to the actual iPhone manual from Apple. The manual does a far better job of exploring the programs available on the iPhone and how to use them in depth. For example, Brown's information on using the iPhone to check your email is limited to a brief paragraph or two saying you can use it with such services as Yahoo! and Gmail, while the manual explains in-depth how to access your mail. In fact, the only thing I saw better information on in the book was the use of iTunes in creating playlists and buying music. This hardly seems like the best use of space given that iTunes is one part of iPhone's package that most users are likely to already be familiar with.

In short, you can do better with the manual and a quick Google search than you can with this book.

Well Written and Clear 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a useful book for any first time pocket pc user, like me. The level is just right, neither too technical nor too simple, and after going through it I feel like an expert user. What more could you ask? If you are thinking of buying this book, you should know that the illustrations and examples mainly reference the HP Jornada, there is definately an HP focus. However, even though I'm an iPAQ user, the HP focus took very little away from my experience with this book. The author is very careful to point out differences between HP and other platforms.

An excellent addition to your VQSG Library 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Jeff Carlson's latest, "Handspring Visor: Visual QuickStart Guide", has proven to be an invaluable resource in my growing VQSG library. I am a convert - no more "dummies" or "morons" for me. The Visual QuickStart series as a whole presents technical material in clear, concise and intelligent fashion, without compromising the integrity of it's material with cartoons or remedial presentation.

Carlson does not fall short of the other respected titles in the Visual QuickStart series. For starters, "Handspring Visor: Visual QuickStart Guide" is very well-organized, making it appealing to those peck and hunt readers, or for those that may use the title as a reference book.

Carlson provides sufficient detail of the Palm OS, but unlike "Palm Organizers: VQSG", the author is able to delve into the idiosynchcrasies of only the Handspring Visor Family. Detailed tips and tricks are far beyond that which is contained in the user guide that comes with your new Visor handheld.

While no reference material can possibly tell you all of the things you can accomplish with your Handspring Visor, Carlson does a superb job of opening your eyes to the path of enlightenment that there's more out there besides your date book, address book, and memo pad. Heck - I'm still reeling that my stylus also has a screw driver and a hidden "tip" to help reset my Visor Deluxe.

Editorial Review:

The popularity of "palmtop" computing devices is soaring thanks in part to the popularity of the Handspring Visor line of expandable handhelds. Sales of new products such as the Visor Prism, Visor Platinum, and Visor Deluxe outstrip those of cell phones and personal computers in some corners of the country. Handspring Visor: Visual QuickStart Guide introduces the complete Visor line, showing readers how to use the operating system, basic modules (address book, date book, memo pad, to-do list), and advanced features. The book covers every feature and facet of Handspring's devices from entering text and sketches, to managing schedules, using databases, spreadsheets, personal finance programs and games. It also addresses the Springboard modules that convert Visors into cell phones, GPS systems, pagers, and MP3 audio players.

Quick start but lots of errors in examples 2 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

As an experienced programmer, I wanted a book that wouldn't waste my time teaching me C/C++ or explaining event loops in lots of detail. I also wanted comparison between Garnet and Cobalt versions of the Palm OS.

This book does provide some of that information.

It does not provide valid examples. The first code examples are in chapter 3. They claim to build on the Draw application from chapter 2, and assume the reader has details about the event loop from chapter 2. Chapter 2, however, contains neither code nor a description of the event loop used in Palm software. There is no reference to the Draw application in the index, either.

After studying sample code from Palm's web site and trying lots of things in the development environment, I was able to get something that worked.

Other examples mix Garnet and Cobalt veriable types so they wouldn't compile on either system or contain other errors that prevent them from compiling.

A less-experienced programmer would probably give up on page 25 where the text tells the reader to modify a resource file that does not exist. Such a programmer would probably rate the book with one star.

I have not completed the book yet although I intend to do so. I felt compelled to warn other readers about its inaccuracies.

A CD or web site (with working examples!) would be useful to copy and paste tutorial information instead of requiring lots of typing.

Editorial Review:

The Windows Pocket PC and Handheld PC are the most robust handheld development platforms ever created. Now, there's a start-to-finish guide to VB handheld development for every Windows programmer. Best-selling Win32 expert Nick Grattan focuses on today's most exciting opportunities for handheld development: integration with existing enterprise and Web applications. Grattan begins with a thorough introduction to the Embedded Visual Basic (EVB) environment used to create Pocket PC/Handheld PC applications, and the key differences between EVB and desktop VB. He shows how to develop database applications using SQL Server for Windows CE, presenting detailed techniques for managing remote data access and replication. The book includes detailed coverage of sending and receiving data from IIS using ASP pages and Pocket Internet Explorer; receiving and parsing XML documents; and the role of .NET Services and SOAP in handheld development. Coverage also includes: managing remote access connections; interacting with data stored in Pocket Office; the Registry; file and serial I/O; and finally, architecting mobile solutions for maximum performance and reliability. For all developers interested in creating applications for Microsoft Pocket PCs and Handheld PCs, and for developers migrating from earlier versions of Windows CE.
