Great book for beginners!! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

For being a new Pocket PC user this book has made the adjustment very easy. The book explains the functions from taking it out of the box, to the memory, to synchronizing it, to the application very well. The pictures of the screens are also a big help.

Absolutely worthless 1 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I cannot believe anyone gave this book greater than 1 star. Are they confusing it with a different title? This book is nothing more than a re-hash of exactly the same information you get with the user's manual. It doesn't even give you any of the tips that one reviewer praises it for. Save your money and buy "How To Do Everything With Your iPAQ Pocket PC" instead. That book has LOTS of tips and tricks and is much better for your money.

Editorial Review:

Osborne Product Differentiation: How to Do Everything with Your iPAQ Pocket PC, Second Edition cover the best-selling line of iPAQs. It provides detailed information from well connected, insider authors, including how to use, customize and optimize the devices; how to run the software that comes with them; and how to get and use various peripherals, etc.

Editorial Review:

The expert introduction to Microsoft's Pocket PC operating system that runs
on devices such as the Compaq ipaq, Casio E125, EM-500 and the HP Jornada
540 series.

Pocket PC Clear & Simple teaches readers how to use, customize and get the
most out of the built in applications included on the Pocket PC. The book is
packed with over 200 screen shots to illustrate the points being made. Pocket PC is bursting with powerful new capabilities, including direct internet connectivity, multimedia, and e-book reader functions, features that have led many industry experts to dub it the "Palm killer," referring to the competing Palm Pilot device.

Pocket PC Clear & Simple is written by Craig Peacock, a recipient of Microsoft's "Windows CE MVP" award and one of the few Windows CE gurus outside of Microsoft. Drawing on his extensive experience running "Craig Peacock's Windows CE Pages," one of the most heavily trafficked sites on the topic, the author offers extensive tips, workarounds, and innovative solutions that will help readers get the most of a Pocket PC device. Consistent with the "Clear & Simple" series, this book features a very visual and engaging style.

Great Resource For Securing PDA's and Mobile Devices 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book provides a wealth of information for network and security administrators struggling to address the security risks posed by PDA's within their networks. It stands out as pretty much the only book addressing the security concerns of these convenient and valuable tools.

The book opens with a fairly comprehensive overview of PDA technology and the security features available. It then moves on to talk about other ways to secure the PDA such as encryption. Most importantly though, the book provides a wide range strategies and advice to help managers deploy and manage PDA's in their networks securely.

As the subtitle "Incorporating Handhelds Into The Enterprise" implies, the book is aimed at network and security administrators and not at the actual PDA users per se. The book serves as a great tool to help administrators begin to tackle the new security issues created by PDA's and to develop and implement structured policies to control PDA security in the enterprise.

PDA's are pretty much here to stay. I recommend that any network or security administrator with users using PDA's take a look at this book to get a grip on securing them.

Apps? Not in this book. 1 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

This is pretty much a waste of print. It is a compilation of advertisments for available apps. The included disk has NO apps on it, only a list of links to go to the web page where the apps are located. Nearly all of the apps are for sale, not free. If you want apps do a Google search for the appps you need, most of which can be downloaded for free.

Disappointing 1 out of 5 stars.

Junk programs, mostly trial offers. Many of these trial programs cannot be permanently installed because the programmers stopped supporting them by website. Get ready to pay, and no payment will be accepted. Then you only have the option to delete the program.

What a waste of time and money.

Editorial Review:

A guide to developing applications for the main types of modern mobile devices-the Palm OS and the Pocket PC, this book focuses on using the new MobileVB tool from AppForge to create PDA applications. The applications developed are specifically for Palm devices, pocket computers with the Pocket PC/Windows CE operating system, and for Kyocera and similar communicators. Descriptions are of a different, free development environment from Microsoft-eMbedded Visual Basic 3.0-that allows programmers to create applications for pocket computers with the Pocket PC OS and its previous version, Windows CE. Tasks that use databases including a compact version of the SQL server are emphasized. Described are the basic features of MobileVB and eVB and their limitations when compared to standard Visual Basic. A detailed description is given of the controls (ingots) of each of the languages, the library functions, and the accompanying utilities. Also covered are a wide range of possible programs including games, applications that use databases, and Internet technologies.

Good for simple programming 3 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This book covers two programming tools for the Palm; one is HotPaw Basic the other CASL. These are OK; but if you want to write simple useful programs I would recommend PocketC and get the book "Palm Programming for the Absolute Beginner" by Andy Harris. With PocketC you can write programs of reasonable complexity.

If however you are wanting to write complex programs, you have to get "Palm OS Programming: The Developers' Guide 2nd ed" by Neil Rhodes and Julie McKeehan, it is excellent. And I suggest using GCC C/C++ or CodeWarrior if you can spare the dollars.

Editorial Review:

Quickly customize or create your own PDA programs

By now, you are familiar with the basic operation of the Palm operating system and have become proficient with many of the standard applications. But, in so doing, you have had to adapt your style and needs to the design and limitations of each program. Wouldn't it be great if you could design programs to meet your individual style? Well, now you can!

The Essential Palm Programming Guide will teach you how to modify popular programs or customize your own program for either business or personal use. No prior programming experience is required. You will learn how to program in 2 popular languages, HotPaw Basic and CASL, via step by step instructions and numerous examples. A Palm emulator is also included so you can test and run any program on your computer before downloading it to your PDA.

not worth much 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

You can pick up this book cheap, but it's not worth much.

I thought it was funny that two previous users who haven't reviewed any other books both happened to use the same UK slang word "freshers". One of them is supposedly from Chicago. Yeah, right. Maybe they are friends of the author.

I didn't even know what they were talking about at first. A dictionary gives this definition:
noun [C] UK INFORMAL
a student who has recently started studying at a college or university

Anyway, don't know why this book would be good for students. I doubt there are many colleges which offer classes in Palm programming. Maybe it is good for students who want to pretend that they worked on real world projects and gives them something to talk about. Otherwise, I don't think the book is useful.

Editorial Review:

With more than 100,000 registered developers, the Palm OS is the standard for handheld computing. Palm OS Programming Professional Projects will guide you through various phases of developing a complete application with database support. This book includes real-life project situations and scenarios to help you relate the concepts to your work environment. It includes hands-on exercises and a companion Web site with downloadable sample code and evaluation questions.
