Editorial Review:

This lecture provides an introduction to the problem of managing the energy demand of mobile devices. Reducing energy consumption, primarily with the goal of extending the lifetime of battery-powered devices, has emerged as a fundamental challenge in mobile computing and wireless communication. The focus of this lecture is on a systems approach where software techniques exploit state-of-the-art architectural features rather than relying only upon advances in lower-power circuitry or the slow improvements in battery technology to solve the problem. Fortunately, there are many opportunities to innovate on managing energy demand at the higher levels of a mobile system. Increasingly, device components offer low power modes that enable software to directly affect the energy consumption of the system. The challenge is to design resource management policies to effectively use these capabilities.

Editorial Review:

Mobile applications running on personal devices, like smartphones, PDAs, or laptop computers, create a fascinating market for many new mobile services. Mobile commerce, location-based services, multimedia messaging, or mobile gaming are expected to constitute a main driving-force for technological advancements, creating a new source of revenue for infrastructure providers and developers. Based on what we observe today, the logical next steps lead to integrated infrastructures and applications supporting "pervasive computing". Whatever this future will look like, the basic cornerstones will be: (i) highly nomadic users, (ii) personalized devices running smart applications, (iii) pervasive smart infrastructures, and (iv) efficient communication for end-to-end integration of all building blocks. This book introduces the amazing world of pervasive computing, leads stepby- step through the new design challenges for pervasive computing applications and identifies the key challenges for engineering middleware supporting pervasive applications. Based on the well-known publish/subscribe paradigm it demonstrates how middleware systems can be designed to explicitly make use of "context" of users and applications. It then shows how context information can be leveraged for optimizing the efficiency of communication inside a notification service. The book addresses developers of middleware, mobile application designers, as well as interested individuals who want to learn more about the challenges of next generation pervasive and mobile systems.

You'll find better elsewhere, and nowhere. 1 out of 5 stars.

I am an experienced interface designer who has never designed for a handheld. So, when I faced a new project that would be deployed on a handheld, I looked here to further my education. This is the only book I could find that is specific to handhelds.

When I was considering this book I read seven glowing reviews, and one total pan. The pan got it right. This book may be more useful for someone who knows very little about interaction design, usability testing, prototyping, and all that, and who isn't interested in gaining more than a superficial understanding of these topics. (If you are new to usability design, you'll find a much better place to start with Mayhew's "The Usability Engineering Lifecycle: A Practitioner's Handbook for User Interface Design.") If, however, you are a usability professional looking for insight on how you need to think differently now that your screen is the size of a Post-it note, wait for the next book to be written. I could have written this book, and the sum of my handheld experience is that I own a Palm and a cell phone.

Editorial Review:

Offering an overview of usability, testing, and information architecture for EPOC, WAP, PDAs, handhelds, and handsets, this how-to guide dives into the details about medium-specific issues and design strategies.
* Discusses designing for the current wireless platforms: cellular phones and PDAs
* Covers both stand alone as well as Web-based application design
* Contains a case study of a usability test

Must Have Companion for MusicMatch 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

If you have MusicMatch or are thinking of trying the service out, I highly recommend this book. The authors have a wonderful sense of humor and provide excellent tips on preparing your computer, audio accessories, websites and software to help you get the most out of managing your music library. All formats of the service are covered including the library, Radio and what is now MusicMatch on Demand. Although the book was written before the current version of 10, the tips and tricks given are still extremely helpful. The authors also have mini interviews with real folks who use MusicMatch in their daily life and new ways to discover new music. They do post their faves and dislikes (naturally many of the dislikes were some of my favorites!), but this a very funny book. The easy to read format allows you to get what you need when you need it. Even if you think you know the program, there are a few surprises. Definitely worth your time and money!

Editorial Review:

Digitize your music library, rip and burn CDs, tune in Internet radio, share files and purchase songs online, create custom playlists, and much more with help from How to Do Everything with Musicmatch. Find out how to copy songs to portable devices, optimize PC sound quality, work with audio players, select the right speakers, and more. A color spotlight section takes you on a visual stroll through several projects.

Great book! Found the book extremely useful. 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Robert O' Hara has truely done it with this book. The depth of information countered with the simplicity of explanations results in a book that is both a great learning tool for the novice as well as a useful reference work for the experienced user. There are a number of things within the book that lead one to a thorough understanding of the Windows CE operating systems and accompanying applications. Throughout the book there are shortcuts, tips, and explainations of the operating systems. Step-by-step instructions provide a useful guide for newcomers, while advanced topics are included for the more technically astute. Most enjoyable is including of the numerous easter-eggs within the Windows CE operating systems and applications. These are great to show friends and family when they ask, "So, just what does that $600 organizer do anyway?" I found this book useful in both learning the operating more thoroughly as well as developing an understanding of the systems shortcomings and features. I only hope he writes another one for Windows CE 2.0 that's as thorough and well written as this one.
