One of my favorite issues... 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The DIY (Do It Yourself) movement is very much alive and well, and one periodical that carries the DIY banner is Make magazine. I *really* liked Make: Technology on Your Time Volume 16 this month, as it touched on some projects that cover a subject I've always been fascinated with... spying. :)

Contents:
Made on Earth
The First Picture Show
Making Make: Television
Cool Old Chemistry Sets
Junk Pedalers
The Make: Way Race Car
Star Bust
Kalavinka Bike Frames
Sparky 2: No Sellout
DIY-brary
I, Robot
DIY: Outdoors, Circuits, Telephony, Home
Meet TRIZ
Fun Idea Vending Machine
Upload: Digital Arts and Crafts
1+2+3: Alien Head Projector
Toys, Tricks, and Teasers
Toolbox
Workshop: Len Cullum
Maker's Calendar
Howtoons: Wooden Stilts
Aha! Puzzle This
Homebrew

While the theme for this issue was "spy-tech", that doesn't mean that you'll ONLY find DIY spy gadgets here. Some of the articles, such as Cool Old Chemistry Sets, takes you back to the days when chemistry sets for kids had (gasp!) REAL LIVE CHEMICALS! Of course, we know better now than to provide actual radioactive elements that they can play with (yes, that was a common feature in some sets). The Make: Way Car Race was interesting in that it was a challenge to drive a race over two days (14 hours) using a car and parts that are no more expensive than $500. In that situation, creativity rules. But for me, the best part were the articles on how to build spy gadgets that are creative and mostly cheap. For instance, there's the talking booby trap that issues a verbal warning when someone moves an item you have attached to it. Made from a Radio Shack recording module mounted on a clothes pin, this looks like it'd be a kick to build (not to mention, to also use!) There's the survival kit that's stored in an Altoids tin (very handy). I'm planning on taking a shot at the flash drive hidden in a AA battery, as I have a spare flash drive or two I could sacrifice to this cause. And my favorite... installing a listening device in a hollowed-out book that can transmit to a receiver approximately 20 feet away. I think I can find a book or two in my collection that would work... :)

Make magazine is packed with stuff like this every month. Some of the projects you'll find interesting but not practical, and some will just not be of any interest at all. But when you get an issue like this that has a number of projects that pique your interest, it's like a treasure trove of fun and learning. This was probably one of my favorite issues...

Editorial Review:

No mission is impossible when makers put their mind to it. MAKE Volume 16 will help you get smart with a special section on spy tech. Learn how to build and use tiny surveillance devices, and how to know if a spy is using them on you. From tiny video cameras to sneaky recorders, this volume has enough cool stuff to make James Bond's inventor Q envious.

ZUNE for Dummy's 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

ZUNE for Dummy's is pretty good about pointing out the feature's ZUNE products have. However in this day and age I have already discovered most of the info by reading reviews on the net. I'd suggest buy the book or spend time searching for the data.

zune for dummies 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

As one reviewer called this book "...for dummies who can't find the information free on the web" - this is true, but for anyone who doesn't have the TIME to search through the zillions disassembled pieces of information about the Zune or the knowledge of which of those pieces they need, this is a great reference - a lot of it was almost too technical, but I got the basics of what I needed and recommend it to anyone who doesn't want to take the time to wade through the endless information on the web, free through it may be!

Editorial Review:

Let Microsoft insiders Brian Johnson and Duncan Mackenzie introduce you to Zune, the exciting new portable media player that plays both audio and video. They explain the numerous entertaining possibilities of Zune, such as transferring a music collection to your Zune, purchasing new music, connecting with friends who share similar taste in music via ZuneLive!, and hooking Zune to your Xbox 360. Additional fun features covered include watching video on Zune, subscribing to podcasts, creating content to share with others, and a preview of upcoming Zune models.

If you develop mobile applications buy this one, period. 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

If you need a no-nonsense, down-to-earth, non-philosophical guide for how to write Java applications for mobile/cellular phones, this is the best book you can buy today. It's very concrete, with lots of working examples etc, and leaves out the fluffy stuff that's so typical for computer books nowadays. The book is an especially good starting point if you are into applications (communicating or non-communicating), but the APIs for writing games are also covered. I hadn't programmed in Java before (yet C and Visual Basic for many years), but I had no problems developing mobile applications after reading this book. Being such a concentrated book means it also works as a reference for when you need to look things up. All in all, this book is for real developers and strongly recommended.

Editorial Review:

There’ s something all of us can learn in this book, so if you’ re serious about getting into embedded Java programming, check it out.

Have you thought about building games for your cell phone or other wireless devices? Whether you are a first–time wireless Java developer, or an experienced professional Beginning J2ME, Third Edition brings exciting wireless and mobile Java application development right to your door!

Editorial Review:

Personal computing has reshaped economies and industries, and is transforming how we express ourselves and relate to one another. The most personal of personal computers are the portables. We carry these gadgets with us wherever we go, whether theyre laptops, smartphones, or the coolest new Web-surfing devices. The Race for Perfect tells the story of two generations of entrepreneurs, designers, and engineers as they have struggled to make ever-better portables.

.

Steve Hamm takes the reader into a world where inspiration, design, engineering, and marketing come together to produce wave upon wave of the innovative products that we love to talk about and use. From the earliest days of portable computing, 40 years ago, entrepreneurs and designers have pushed forward relentlessly in a quest to create the perfect device. Their efforts have produced a few fabulous successes and many failures. But they never give up. Theyre driven by the basic rule of the tech industry: innovate or die.

.

In addition to a fascinating read, The Race for Perfect offers valuable lessons for business people in any industry, revealing how they must

.

INNOVATE constantly to differentiate their products.
CREATE design principles that are timeless.
INTEGRATE design and engineering so products are both useful and fun to use.
IMPROVE quality and convenience without compromise.
TAP social networks to turn customers into fans

. .

At the center of this tale is the story of a single product, Lenovos ThinkPad X300 laptop. Lenovo, the first Chinese company to seek to establish a global consumer brand, bought IBMs PC division in 2005 primarily to get the companys storied ThinkPad laptops. The X300 was conceived as a halo product that would draw customers to Lenovos entire line. Woven through The Race for Perfect is a case study of how this ambitious company, with teams in Japan, the United States, and China, marshaled its resources to pursue laptop perfection. As X300 came close to the finish line, it collided head-on with Apples super-slim MacBook Air-with surprising results.

Editorial Review:

Embedded computer systems literally surround us: they're in our cell phones, PDAs, cars, TVs, refrigerators, heating systems, and more. In fact, embedded systems are one of the most rapidly growing segments of the computer industry today.

Along with the growing list of devices for which embedded computer systems are appropriate, interest is growing among programmers, hobbyists, and engineers of all types in how to design and build devices of their own. Furthermore, the knowledge offered by this book into the fundamentals of these computer systems can benefit anyone who has to evaluate and apply the systems.

The second edition of "Designing Embedded Hardware" has been updated to include information on the latest generation of processors and microcontrollers, including the new MAXQ processor. If you're new to this and don't know what a MAXQ is, don't worry--the book spells out the basics of embedded design for beginners while providing material useful for advanced systems designers.

"Designing Embedded Hardware" steers a course between those books dedicated to writing code for particular microprocessors, and those that stress the philosophy of embedded system design without providing any practical information. Having designed 40 embedded computer systems of his own, author John Catsoulis brings a wealth of real-world experience to show readers how to design and create entirely new embedded devices and computerized gadgets, as well as how to customize and extend off-the-shelf systems.

Loaded with real examples, this book also provides a roadmap to the pitfalls and traps to avoid. "Designing Embedded Hardware" includes:

The theory and practice of embedded systems

Understanding schematics and data sheets

Powering an embedded system

Producing and debugging an embedded system

Processors such as the PIC, Atmel AVR, and Motorola 68000-series

Digital Signal Processing (DSP) architectures

Protocols (SPI and I2C) used to add peripherals

RS-232C, RS-422, infrared communication, and USB

CAN and Ethernet networking

Pulse Width Monitoring and motor control

If you want to build your own embedded system, or tweak an existing one, this invaluable book gives you the understanding and practical skills you need.

Good Reminder for Professionals 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

As I read the book it reminded me of all the things I should be doing to keep my work organized. The tablet PC is a great tool which I encorporated into my daily routine prior to reading. This book gave me helpful hints on how to do things effectively and efficently on my tablet. The book is written using the beta and initial version of the tablet PC tools. If you purchase you must download the updates of Chapters 3 & 4. This update gives a better understanding of the current tools of the tablet PC. It is worth the money in time saved.

Tablet PC book not for learning the Tablet 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book is not for someone learning to really use the Tablet PC. It is about his system of organization and how to use the Tablet PC as a key device in organizing your life, as the title indicates. I was disappointed in the book overall as I was looking for a book that would educate the physicians I support in better use of the Tablet itself.

Editorial Review:

Seize the Work Day describes using the Tablet PC to help the average office work-manager get control of his/her work day and become more productive. It paints a compelling picture of the Tablet PC as a very practical business tool, and assists the user in succeeding with the Tablet PC in such a setting.
