Editorial Review:

Since the dawn of creation, man has designed maps to help identify the space that we occupy. From Lewis and Clark's pencil-sketched maps of mountain trails to Jacques Cousteau's sophisticated charts of the ocean floor, creating maps of the utmost precision has been a constant pursuit. So why should things change now?

Well, they shouldn't. The reality is that map creation, or "cartography," has only improved in its ease-of-use over time. In fact, with the recent explosion of inexpensive computing and the growing availability of public mapping data, mapmaking today extends all the way to the ordinary PC user.

"Mapping Hacks," the latest page-turner from O'Reilly Press, tackles this notion head on. It's a collection of one hundred simple--and mostly free--techniques available to developers and power users who want draw digital maps or otherwise visualize geographic data. Authors Schuyler Erle, Rich Gibson, and Jo Walsh do more than just illuminate the basic concepts of location and cartography, they walk you through the process one step at a time.

"Mapping Hacks" shows you where to find the best sources of geographic data, and then how to integrate that data into your own map. But that's just an appetizer. This comprehensive resource also shows you how to interpret and manipulate unwieldy cartography data, as well as how to incorporate personal photo galleries into your maps. It even provides practical uses for GPS (Global Positioning System) devices--those touch-of-a-button street maps integrated into cars and mobile phones. Just imagine: If Captain Kidd had this technology, we'd all know where to find his buried treasure!

With all of these industrial-strength tips andtools, "Mapping Hacks" effectively takes the sting out of the digital mapmaking and navigational process. Now you can create your own maps for business, pleasure, or entertainment--without ever having to sharpen a single pencil.

This is a great book that shows you how to use all the bells and whistles of the iPhone. Easy to follow steps and full color images make it fun to look at and read.

Great Book-A must have for iphone owners! 5 out of 5 stars.

This has a lot of great tips and I needed this book before I even took my iphone out of the box! It guides you step-by-step and I really love the visual reference ( a necessity for me!) Enjoy-you really can't go wrong with this handy guide.

Great Tips that help with iPod Touch as well. 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a wonderful, full color step by step introduction to the original iPhone. Note that this book doesn't cover the new 3G version of the iPhone. Although I don't have an iPhone yet, I was interested in an iPod Touch since it has everything but phone functions and it was very helpful for navigating through the menus and explaining what the settings cover. The full color pictures are excellent screen shots of the various features. It also walks you through basic set ups for personalization, and explains how to use the main features. I highly recommend this book if you are interested in an iPhone or an iPod Touch and not sure if you will like it. When the 3G version of this books comes out, grab the update. Great info for a reasonable price.

Editorial Review:

There are basically two types of iPhone books out there: (1) The “Tell-me-all-about-it” kind, which includes in-depth discussions on everything from wireless network protocols to advanced compression codes. (2) Then there’s this book, which instead is a “show-me-how-to-do-it” book, that skips all the confusing techno-jargon and just tells you, in plain simple English, exactly how to use the iPhone features you want to use most.

The iPhone Book is from Scott Kelby, the award-winning author of the smash bestseller, The iPod Book, who takes that same highly-acclaimed, casual, straight-to-the-point concept and layout and brings it to learning Apple’s amazing iPhone. Scott teams up once again with gadget guru, and leading iPhone authority, Terry White to put together a book that is an awful lot like the iPhone itself—simple to use and fun to learn. The book’s layout is brilliant, with each page covering just one single topic, so finding the information you need is quick and easy, with a large full-color photo on each page so you can see exactly how it works.

You’ll quickly learn how to use the most useful and most requested iPhone features so you can start having fun, and start really using your iPhone today—right now! If you’re ready to learn “just the funk and not the junk,” it’s all here—in the only book of its kind—and you’re going to love it.

This is a really nice magazine for anyone who loves tinkering with electronics. We are trying to find the old issues we have missed and Amazon is definitely the right place for that. The mags are pretty expensive for the subscription but are really resonable here.
