THE BEST BUY FOR YOUR BUCK! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was a tremendous help. I bought it only a week-and-a-half before my FE Exam, and it helped wonders. I even passed the FE on my first try! I am definitely recommending this book. It is a huge time-saver. If you can have all the equations ready to go in your calc, then all you have to do is plug in the variable's values, and it's a lot quicker than writing all of that down to solve it! LOVE THIS BOOK! Excellent buy!

Full of non-technical superficial material 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The book's seems to be targeting application developers. In fact, the author put this on the page before the table of contents

The heading is
"Mobile Application Development 100 Success Secrets" which
"... is NOT about the ins and outs of Mobile Application development. .."
" This book is also NOT about Mobile Appication Development' best practice and standards details. Instead, it introduces everything you want to know to be sucessful with Mobile Application Development"

But how to be successful ?

The author compiled 100 articles, each one page and a few lines long, (proper formatting can make each article, typically less than 400 words, fit into one page) for the so called top 100 questions found in forums and the author's consultancy and education programs.

I think probably all mobile developer can answer 90% of the questions far better than the author. Take for example, on page 78,

"The Secrets of an Effective Mobile Application Development Tool"

The first half of the article is opening remarks, which need not be shown.
The second half is very short as you know, can be easily be included below:

"What is the general proeductivity feature of the tool?
"Of course, you would want to have a tool which productivity rate is at par with the best tools. When you make an evaluation on the tools that you are making, it is best that you check on the capability of the tool to produce better results.
"Is the productivity feature matching with the price of the tool?
"As a businessman, money plays a verfy important role. It is e3ssential that you carefully assess whether or not the money that is to be shelled out from buying the tool is highly compensated with what it can provide you as the user.

Did you learn anything from these lines. I find only part of the last sentence useful.
"... whether or not the money that is to be shelled out ... is highly compensated"

Judge for yourself. Unfortunately, only the book cover is shown for you to judge.

Great resource! 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I bought the book first and then bought my IPOD! The book was a great resource for a 'techy' novice like myself and was a great help in getting started! Damon kept the language simple, but made sure you understood the IPOD jargon. My friends and I trade tips now that we all have the book. When I ran into something I wasn't sure how to handle, the book enabled me to get unstuck. I also appreciated the size as well as the ability to condense the necessary information to be able to enjoy the IPOD quickly!

Should be titled learn PocketC programming 4 out of 5 stars.
20 of 21 people found this review helpful.

Yes, PocketC is a nice productive development environment for Palm - but it is based on a proprietary hybrid of the C language - and the whole book is centered around this specific development environment - if you think the book will cover standard c/c++ (e.g. using the gnu C++ compiler), you're in for a shock! Also, you have to BUY PocketC after 45 days, because it is shareware - the standard development environment offered by Palm (based on the Eclipse integrated environment & gnu c++) is FREE

Good for beginners, with caveats 3 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

PocketC is an excellent programming platform for Palm devices. I have used it to create simple programs, and it turns out, with little more care, can be used to create professional quality programs. This book does not show you how to create professional quality programs with PocketC. However, it is a good book to start if you want to learn programming in your own time.

Personally, I find the program samples rather useless, and not at all fun. Perhaps better examples should have been used. Watch out for amateurish code! Plenty of them peppers the examples. Most annoying is rectangles intersection code. The author admits it is faulty, and instead of fixing it, provides excuses for it. Why didn't he ask his smart programmer friend on how to fix it? It's not a hard problem. Some of the slowness of the code may stem from the way CControls works, so you may do better providing your own code. A reading of Algorithm by Robert Sedgewick can prove useful.

Good points: Easy reading, accessible for beginners. Good PocketC packages. STAIR principle.

Bad points: Amateurish code. Lots of space padding pictures. Not all examples are useful program.

Editorial Review:

The popularity of handheld technology is growing at a rapid rate. This book takes a fun approach to this difficult programming topic, teaching readers the fundamentals they need to know through the unique method of game programming. Readers create games for their PDA as they learn the basics of the Pocket C programming language. It is perfect for the hobbyist or moderately technically savvy computer user who wants to customize their PDA.

Cnet did a great job in finding good shortcuts and sharing them with the rest of the world. This book has answered my questions about certain things that I didn't know how to do. Everyone should buy this book.

Somewhat Deceiving 1 out of 5 stars.

I really wouldn't consider this a "projects" book as it is a manual for how to use your iPod or iTunes. I really was looking for innovative ways to use my iPod, but found next to nothing that I didn't already know from just playing around with either my iPod or iTunes. I would recommend this to someone who has little to no experience with either an iPod or iTunes.

What the book covers: Android phones will come in a wide variety of form factors, shapes, and sizes. At their hearts, however, the phones will function in a similarly (just as a wide variety of computers run Windows, but they are all fairly similar). The book will start off with Part I: Getting to Know the Android Phone. This will introduce the Android software and compare the first Android phones that are available and show the reader all the different capabilities that Android supports so that they can choose the features that they're most interested in. Part II, "Using Your Android Phone as a Phone," shows the reader how to navigate the Android interface, make phone calls, manage contacts, take pictures, and so on. Readers will find out how to load new open-source and retail software onto their phones. Part III covers the advanced capabilities of Android phones and cool software that's available. Part IV shows readers how to ensure that their phones are secure and to prevent hacks of their phones.

Series specifications: The For Dummies series is a publishing phenomenon that provides clear explanations in plain English in a reference format with a dask of humor.

Editorial Review:

Since the dawn of creation, man has designed maps to help identify the space that we occupy. From Lewis and Clark's pencil-sketched maps of mountain trails to Jacques Cousteau's sophisticated charts of the ocean floor, creating maps of the utmost precision has been a constant pursuit. So why should things change now?

Well, they shouldn't. The reality is that map creation, or "cartography," has only improved in its ease-of-use over time. In fact, with the recent explosion of inexpensive computing and the growing availability of public mapping data, mapmaking today extends all the way to the ordinary PC user.

"Mapping Hacks," the latest page-turner from O'Reilly Press, tackles this notion head on. It's a collection of one hundred simple--and mostly free--techniques available to developers and power users who want draw digital maps or otherwise visualize geographic data. Authors Schuyler Erle, Rich Gibson, and Jo Walsh do more than just illuminate the basic concepts of location and cartography, they walk you through the process one step at a time.

"Mapping Hacks" shows you where to find the best sources of geographic data, and then how to integrate that data into your own map. But that's just an appetizer. This comprehensive resource also shows you how to interpret and manipulate unwieldy cartography data, as well as how to incorporate personal photo galleries into your maps. It even provides practical uses for GPS (Global Positioning System) devices--those touch-of-a-button street maps integrated into cars and mobile phones. Just imagine: If Captain Kidd had this technology, we'd all know where to find his buried treasure!

With all of these industrial-strength tips andtools, "Mapping Hacks" effectively takes the sting out of the digital mapmaking and navigational process. Now you can create your own maps for business, pleasure, or entertainment--without ever having to sharpen a single pencil.
