Editorial Review:

The iPod is the world's bestselling music player. But if you think that it's just a music player, then you must think Clark Kent is just a newspaperman.

In this book, New York Times tech columnist J. D. Biersdorfer blows open the secret doors of this gleaming, chrome-and-white beauty. With humor and authority, she lays bare an astonishing collection of useful tips, tricks, and shortcuts like these:

  • iPod as PalmPilot. The iPod can suck in your calendar, address book, to-do list, and notes from a Mac or PC, and then display them at the touch of a button. It also doubles as an alarm clock and stopwatch.
  • iPod as hard drive. You can use your iPod to carry gigantic files from place to place.
  • iPod as e-book. The iPod makes an excellent book reader, capable of scrolling through recipes, driving directions, and even Web pages.
  • iPod as GameBoy. The iPod's games are perfect time-killers for waiting rooms, bus rides, and the Department of Motor Vehicles.
iPod: The Missing Manual is much more than it seems, too. It not only covers all iPod models for both Mac and Windows, including the super-slim 2003 series, it's also the ultimate guide to iTunes, MusicMatch Jukebox Plus, and even the new iTunes Music Store.

No matter what kind of music moves you, iPod: The Missing Manual will help you get much more out of your iPod--and much more into it.

Better than others of its kind, but still basic 4 out of 5 stars.

This is for a new or unsophisticated user of Palm OS devices. There really isn't anything here that can't be found in the Palm reference manual or in the online Palm forums.

But everything is presented in a crisp manner with more than adequate illustrations. And it really does cover literally everything the average user can do with the Palm OS.

Someone new to Palm or those who have hesitated to explore the boundaries of the Palm OS will find this book helpful, more helpful than many others of the same kind.

Editorial Review:

"While Nokia is perhaps most recognized for its leadership in the mobile phone market, they have successfully demonstrated their knowledge of the Internet security appliance market and its customers requirements."
--Chris Christiansen, Vice President, Internet Infrastructure and Security Software, IDC.

Syngress has a long history of publishing market-leading books for system administrators and security professionals on commercial security products, particularly Firewall and Virtual Private Network (VPN) appliances from Cisco, Check Point, Juniper, SonicWall, and Nokia (see related titles for sales histories). The Nokia Firewall, VPN, and IPSO Configuration Guide will be the only book on the market covering the all-new Nokia Firewall/VPN Appliance suite. Nokia Firewall/VPN appliances are designed to protect and extend the network perimeter.

According to IDC research, Nokia Firewall/VPN Appliances hold the #3 worldwide market-share position in this space behind Cisco and Juniper/NetScreen. IDC estimated the total Firewall/VPN market at $6 billion in 2007, and Nokia owns 6.6% of this market. Nokia's primary customers for security appliances are Mid-size to Large enterprises who need site-to-site connectivity and Mid-size to Large enterprises who need remote access connectivity through enterprise-deployed mobile devices. Nokia appliances for this market are priced form $1,000 for the simplest devices (Nokia IP60) up to $60,0000 for large enterprise- and service-provider class devices (like the Nokia IP2450 released in Q4 2007). While the feature set of such a broad product range obviously varies greatly, all of the appliances run on the same operating system: Nokia IPSO (IPSO refers to Ipsilon Networks, a company specializing in IP switching acquired by Nokia in 1997. The definition of the acronym has little to no meaning for customers.) As a result of this common operating system across the product line, The Nokia Firewall, VPN, and IPSO Configuration Guide will be an essential reference to users of any of these products. Users manage the Nokia IPSO (which is a Linux variant, specifically designed for these appliances) through a Web interface called Nokia Network Voyager or via a powerful Command Line Interface (CLI). Coverage within the book becomes increasingly complex relative to the product line.

The Nokia Firewall, VPN, and IPSO Configuration Guide and companion Web site will provide seasoned network administrators and security professionals with the in-depth coverage and step-by-step walkthroughs they require to properly secure their network perimeters and ensure safe connectivity for remote users. The book contains special chapters devoted to mastering the complex Nokia IPSO command line, as well as tips and tricks for taking advantage of the new "ease of use" features in the Nokia Network Voyager Web interface. In addition, the companion Web site offers downloadable video walkthroughs on various installation and troubleshooting tips from the authors.

* Only book on the market covering Nokia Firewall/VPN appliances, which hold 6.6% of a $6 billion market
* Companion website offers video walkthroughs on various installation and troubleshooting tips from the authors
* Special chapters detail mastering the complex Nokia IPSO command line, as well as tips and tricks for taking advantage of the new "ease of use" features in the Nokia Network Voyager Web interface

fairly good in covering many Clie models, But 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This book is outdated. It doesn't contain any info regarding to the newest Clie model UX-50. It didn't even address any of the following: 1)AIM, Yahoo Messenger, ICQ, and the everyday applications. 2) a few Clie models have built-in camera, and specifically, UX-50 supports video recording, but does the camera work as a webcam? 3)If Yahoo Messeger does work with Clie, will the built-in microphone functions like the microphone headset for voice chatting? 4)The Jabra bluetooth headset by Sony is supported by many bluetooth devices, such as cellphone(Sony Ericsson, Nokia, etc.), Pc, Mac(in ichat), but what about Clie with bluetooth capabilities? 5)In the section where, it talked about making your own tunes in Midi format, but it didn't tell you that you can transfer into your cellphone (t616, etc.)to use it as a ringtone, also you can download pictures from the internet and shrink it down to the right size with photoshop(288x352 in jpeg format), then transfer it to your cellphone to use it as a wallpaper.

Another Dummies Essential 4 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

As a newbie PDA owner, I found the information in Sony Clie for Dummies both informative and essential. Well-organized and packed with lively, plain English instructions, the Sony Clie for Dummies book is much more than a manual. This book covers a little bit of everything relating to this wonderful Palm OS based handheld. In addition to the basics concerning the address book, date book, To Do List, Hot Synch, and the Palm Desktop for Clie, the author does an excellent job of documenting many of the essential third-party programs that make the handheld a complete pocket computer. Programs like Documents To Go, Agendus, and various games are all covered in detail. This book has not only helped me understand and use my PDA device much more effectively, but most of the supplemental web links listed in the chapters are still active as of this writing, unlike many books whose links have disappeared by the time they hit the shelves. This is how I found out about accessories like the battery pack charger, the single cable synch/charger, and a few other goodies that I probably wouldn't have stumbled on to on my own. Fans of the Dummies series will not be disappointed with this one.

this book is not current - Updated Revision Needed Now 3 out of 5 stars.
25 of 27 people found this review helpful.

While I enjoyed the book and found much of the information informative, I was also disapointed that it's focus is on the 3100,3600,3700,3800 series and the MicroSoft CE 2002 operating system. The 3870 is the latest model referenced and it was released 11/15/2001, almost two years ago. Alot of changes have happened and this book is not current.

I have just been introduced to the iPAQ world with a 5555 and MS CE 2003. Most of the CE 2003 Operating System is the same (in appearence) as CE 2003. After reading the HP users manual, which I found sparce, I purchased this book partly for configuration information of WiFi email (which is a major bullet on the cover) and troubleshooting.

I found the book's information on configuration of WiFi email to be basic, almost the same at the HP manual, and there was little information to deal with setup problems that do arise. There are only 2 pages devoted out of 365 that deal with troubleshooting...
