a leap forward 4 out of 5 stars.

I read "Something From the Nightside" a couple of years ago and was underwhelmed. But I thought the premise was good and people whose opinions I respected loved the series, so I thought it was time to give the Nightside another shot. I'm glad I did: "Agents of Light and Darkness" was an improvement in every way. The writing is tighter, the story more interesting, and the use of the term "in the Nightside" is reduced by around 80%. So far, this series feels like a less grim version of Edward Lee's "City Infernal" novels. "Agents of Light and Darkness" is a fun, quick read that doesn't bog the reader down. It's pulp, it gets the job done, and I plan to move on to the other books in the series.

Light and darkness, good and evil 4 out of 5 stars.

Simon R. Green's Nightside is reminiscent of a Neil Gaiman universe, full of twists and shadows... but written by Jim Butcher.

And his second Nightside novel "Agents of Light and Darkness" is Green's foray into the world of God, angels and devils. Sure, he takes some creative license with the theology here, but he can spin some wicked storytelling and entertainingly macabre characters -- and make a simply plot very, very complex.

Amidst strange angel rumors, John Taylor is hired by the Pope's undercover representative, Father Jude. The Vatican wants to hire Taylor to find the Unholy Grail -- the cup that Judas drank from at the Last Supper. Think the One Ring in cup form -- and there are a lot of people, including the fallen angels, who want to get ahold of its corrupting power. Immediately he gets bludgeoned by other offers.

So Taylor goes to get Shotgun Suzie, and they prowl demon S&M clubs and neo-Nazi havens -- and find the horrendous Speaking Gun, the only weapon that can kill an angel. But angels -- and demons -- are descending on the Nightside, and tearing it to shreds in the search for the Unholy Grail. So Taylor must find it first -- and hope that the Nightside still exists by then.

Okay, obviously Green plays some theological fast-and-loose -- seriously, could an angel really get skewered against a building side? But he spins a very fascinating story -- and since he's already told us what the Nightside is, and how weird it is, we get right into the story and stay there until the end.

And Green's writing has definitely matured since the first Nightside story, becoming steadier and more detailed, and his dialogue is a bit snappier ("You want me to sneak up on an angel and rip out its pinfeathers, so you can make a fashion statement?"). And he has a certain flair for the grotesque -- the half-eaten girl at the demon club, Suzie's nightmare, the pantomime audience of the dead.

But Green really outdoes himself in the last chapter, where we find out one character's secret past, and what will happen with the Unholy Grail. It's a very emotional, almost tender chapter, and gives a striking look at the religious aspects behind the novel.

Taylor is the classic noir anti-hero in here -- he doesn't really trust anything, and he's wary of everyone. But Suzie gets a lot of fleshing-out, since we discover a tragic, very dark past. The only problem with their characters was that everyone started yelling in fear when they showed up -- come on, can't SOMEONE be stupid enough not to care.

"Agents of Light and Darkness" is religion with a Nightside twist -- lots of creepy people, grotesque surroundings, and avenging angels. A nice sequel, and a great continuation of the Nightside story.

Editorial Review:

The New York Times bestselling author takes readers back to the Nightside.

A quest for the Unholy Grail-the goblet from which Judas drank at the Last Supper-takes private eye John Taylor deep into the secret, magical heart of London...called the Nightside.

parts are good... 3 out of 5 stars.

I have to admit, I am disappointed. The first trilogy (Kushiel's Dart, Kushiel's Chosen, and Kushiel's Avatar) was incredible. This was not. While Imriel is an engaging character with his own flaws, weaknesses, strengths, and desires, I just don't think he can compare with Phedre. Furthermore, in this book at least, all that really happens is the set-up, a lot of whining, and some limited self-discovery. In Kushiel's Dart we had all that plus an over-arching plot, a deadly struggle, and many battles (both physical and political). Here, Imri goes to college. Hardly the same scale, is it?

Jacqueline Carey is an incredible writer and her writing style here is, as always, beautiful, eloquent, and evocative. Yet, the plot falls through. The reader finds him or herself caring more about Phedre and Joscelin (who are little more than cameos, here), Alais (whose importance declines very quickly, and just about everyone else more than Imriel.

So, on the whole, for those who really loved the first three books, this one is worth a read. However, don't get your hopes up.

Editorial Review:

Imriel de la Courcel's birth parents are history's most reviled traitors, but his adoptive parents, the Comtesse Phedre and the warrior-priest Joscelin, are Terre d'Ange's greatest champions. Stolen, tortured and enslaved as a young boy, Imriel is now a Prince of the Blood; third in line for the throne in a land that revels in art, beauty and desire. It is a court steeped in deeply laid conspiracies...and there are many who would see the young prince dead. Some despise him out of hatred for his mother, Melisande, who nearly destroyed the entire realm in her quest for power. Others because they fear he has inherited his mother's irresistible allure...and her dangerous gifts. As he comes of age, plagued by unwanted desires, Imriel shares their fears. When a simple act of friendship traps Imriel in a besieged city where the infamous Melisande is worshiped as a goddess and where a dead man leads an army, the Prince must face his greatest test: to find his true self.

Editorial Review:

For centuries they’ve lived in secret among northern England’s green and misted hills. Creatures of extraordinary beauty, power, and sensuality, they possess the ability to shape-shift from human to dragon and back again. Now their secret–and their survival–is threatened by a temptation that will break every boundary....

Dubbed the Smoke Thief, a daring jewel thief is confounding the London police. His wealthy victims claim the master burglar can walk through walls and vanish into thin air. But Christoff, the charismatic Marquess of Langford, knows the truth: the thief is no ordinary human but a “runner” who’s fled Darkfrith without permission. As Alpha leader of the dra´kon, it’s Kit’s duty to capture the fugitive before the secrets of the tribe are revealed to mortals. But not even Kit suspects that the Smoke Thief could be a woman.

Clarissa Rue Hawthorne knew her dangerous exploits would attract the attention of the dra´kon. But she didn’t expect Christoff himself to come to London, dangling the tribe’s most valuable jewel–the Langford Diamond–as bait. For as long as she could remember, Rue had lived the life of a halfling–half dra´kon, half mortal–and an outcast in both worlds. She’d always loved the handsome and willful Kit from the only place it was safe: from afar. But now she was no longer the shy, timid girl she’d once been. She was the first woman capable of making the Turn in four generations. So why did she still feel the same dizzying sense of vulnerability whenever he was near?

From the moment he saw her, Kit knew that the alluring and powerful beauty was every bit his Alpha equal and destined to be his bride. And by the harsh laws of the dra´kon, Rue knew that she was the property of the marquess. But they will risk banishment and worse for a chance at something greater. For now Rue is his prisoner, the diamond has disappeared, and she’s made the kind of dangerous proposition a man like Kit cannot resist....In this bewitching novel, Shana Abé transports us into a world of exhilarating romance and magic.

Editorial Review:

He was a riot of rockets and fountains and people, in such intricate detail and color that you could bear the voiced murmuring, small and muted, from the crowds that inhabited his body.

The Illustrated Man

Ray Bradbury brings wonders alive. A peerless American storyteller, his oeuvre has been celebrated for decades--from The Martian Chronicles and Fahrenheit 451 to Dandelion Wine and Something Wicked This Way Comes.

The Illustrated Man is classic Bradbury --a collection of tales that breathe and move, animated by sharp, intaken breath and flexing muscle. Here are eighteen startling visions of humankind's destiny, unfolding across a canvas of decorated skin--visions as keen as the tattooist's needle and as colorful as the inks that indelibly stain the body.

The images, ideas, sounds and scents that abound in this phantasmagoric sideshow are provocative and powerful: the mournful cries of celestial travelers cast out cruelly into a vast, empty space of stars and blackness ... the sight of gray dust settling over a forgotten outpost on a road that leads nowhere ... the pungent odor of Jupiter on a returning father's clothing. Here living cities take their vengeance, technology awakens the most primal natural instincts, Martian invasions are foiled by the good life and the glad hand, and dreams are carried aloft in junkyard rockets.

Ray Bradbury's The Illustrated Man is a kaleidoscopic blending of magic, imagination, and truth, widely believed to be one of the Grandmaster's premier accomplishments: as exhilarating as interplanetary travel, as maddening as a walk in a million-year rain, and as comforting as simple, familiar rituals on the last night of the world.

Deal With the Devil 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Hell To Pay (2007) is the seventh Urban Fantasy novel in the Nightside series, following Sharper Than a Serpent's Tooth. In the previous volume, Lilith raised the dead in the private burial grounds of the Necropolis, including Charles Taylor. When John Taylor found his father, he reunited him with Henry Walker and Mark Robinson and the three of them started work once again on the Babalon Working, but this time in reverse.

The followers of Lilith started fighting among themselves and Julian Advent soon defeated the rabble. Lilith's children slunk back to the Street of Gods and resumed their former ways. Suzie and John became partners in the detective agency.

In this novel, John Taylor is invited to Griffen Hall. Jeremiah Griffen is an immortal and the richest man in Nightside. He owns most of the properties and many of the inhabitants. The Authorities had kept him from taking over everything, but now they are gone.

Jeremiah's granddaughter and heir is missing. Three days before, someone -- or something -- had killed Jeremiah's family lawyer and his copy of Jeremiah's will was stolen. Shortly after that, the whole family had learned that Melissa was the sole heritor of Jeremiah's estate. Now she is gone -- kidnapped, murdered or fled -- and Jeremiah knows nothing about her whereabouts.

Taylor goes through the motions of obtaining a recent photograph and asking about the movements of the family, yet he plans to use his talent to find the girl. This time, however, something is blocking his extrasense. Then something comes after Taylor and/or Jeremiah, but Taylor counters the attack.

He can use his talent for other things, but not to locate Melissa. Taylor is going to have to locate the missing heir the hard way. He starts by asking Jeremiah to describe his family.

In this story, the butler Hobbes has already questioned the servants and learned nothing. So Taylor interviews the family. He even talks to the grandson Paul through a locked door, but learns nothing helpful at the time. Later, he talks to the son and daughter and their spouses, as well as the grandson, in less formal settings and learns more about the family. Eventually, Jeremiah even tells Taylor how he became an immortal.

While searching for Melissa, Taylor encounters the Salvation Army Sisterhood, gentry bodyguards and backstreet thugs. He helps Walker dispose of a homicidal shapeshifter. Yet he just can't find Melissa.

This story involves Taylor in a struggle against Hell itself. Only the highest powers in Heaven and Hell can block his talent and Heaven is unlikely to do so. At least his talent works outside of Griffen Hall.

Highly recommended for Green fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of supernatural powers, corrupt and venal socialites, and teenage rebellion.

-Arthur W. Jordin

Editorial Review:

In the wake of the war that left the Nightside leaderless, Jeremiah Griffin-one of the last of the immortal human families-plans to fill the power vacuum. But his granddaughter has disappeared, and he wants John Taylor to use his special abilities to find her. Except someone-or something-is blocking Taylor's abilities.

3 out of 4 ain't bad 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is made up of four stories that happened during or before the Black Jewels trilogy.

The first story is about the dragons and the golden spiders before the Blood received their jewels (10 pages).

The second story is about how Lucivar and Marian met, fell in love, and eventually married (218 pages).

The third story is about Saetan's past and the beginning of the first war (44 pages).

The fourth story is after "Queen of the Darkness" and focuses on Daemon and Jaenelle (166 pages).

With all four stories you get a nice sized book.

Personally, I could do without the first story. It has little relevance to the trilogy and is not long enough for you to care what happens to the characters.

The second and the fourth stories are by far the best. You are reading about developed characters and you tend to have a vested interest in what happens in the stories.

The third story about Saetan is referenced in both in the second and fourth stories. As a stand alone story it is ok. It is a short memory that explains certain aspects of Saetan's behavior. Being referenced by the other two stories, makes this a more valuable story.

Overall, I would say that three out of the four stories are good, two of those three are spectacular. It is a must buy if you want to know what happens after the trilogy.

Editorial Review:

The national bestselling Black Jewels trilogy established award-winning Anne Bishop as an author whose "sublime skill...blends the darkly macabre with spine-tingling emotional intensity, mesmerizing magic, lush sensuality, and exciting action."* Now the saga continues-with four all-new adventures of Jaenelle and her kindred.

"The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown."
--H. P. LOVECRAFT, "Supernatural Horror in Literature"

Howard Phillips Lovecraft forever changed the face of horror, fantasy, and science fiction with a remarkable series of stories as influential as the works of Poe, Tolkien, and Edgar Rice Burroughs. His chilling mythology established a gateway between the known universe and an ancient dimension of otherworldly terror, whose unspeakable denizens and monstrous landscapes--dread Cthulhu, Yog-Sothoth, the Plateau of Leng, the Mountains of Madness--have earned him a permanent place in the history of the macabre.

In Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos, a pantheon of horror and fantasy's finest authors pay tribute to the master of the macabre with a collection of original stories set in the fearsome Lovecraft tradition:

¸  The Call of Cthulhu by H. P. Lovecraft: The slumbering monster-gods return to the world of mortals.
¸  Notebook Found in a Deserted House by Robert Bloch: A lone farmboy chronicles his last stand against a hungering backwoods evil.
¸  Cold Print by Ramsey Campbell: An avid reader of forbidden books finds a treasure trove of deadly volumes--available for a bloodcurdling price.
¸  The Freshman by Philip José Farmer: A student of the black arts receives an education in horror at notorious Miskatonic University.

Good read for fans of Jim Butcher 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a solid beginning for a very good series. "Greywalker" introduces you to your heroine Harper Blaine and the world of the Grey where shadows of history walk amongst us as "ghosts" without our knowledge. The Paranormal exists on a separate plane that few can see and even less enter and interact. Harper, a Private Investigator, finds that she can do just that after a brief brush with death. This is a tale of Harper and her journey to understand, accept and embrace the new world she is thrust into. She meets interesting people along the way (Vampires, Witchesand a necromancy, oh my) This book is well written but can at times get fairly scientific in its explanations of the physics of the Grey. Makes for a slower read since you have to "think" about what the characters are talking about. However, this by no means takes away from the story and plot line. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a mystery with alittle paranormal mixed in.

Editorial Review:

Harper Blaine was slogging along as a small-time P.I. when a two-bit perp's savage assault left her dead. For two minutes, to be precise.

When Harper comes to in the hospital, she begins to feel a bit ...strange. She sees things that can only be described as weird-shapes emerging from a foggy grey mist, snarling teeth, creatures roaring.

But Harper's not crazy. Her "death" has made her a Greywalker-able to move between our world and the mysterious, cross-over zone where things that go bump in the night exist. And her new gift (or curse) is about to drag her into that world of vampires and ghosts, magic and witches, necromancers and sinister artifacts. Whether she likes it or not.

Not what I expected 3 out of 5 stars.

Alright, this book is sold as gay romance, but really the relationship between the two characters seems to be almost background static. I enjoyed the actual story, so I wasn't bored; however, I agree with another reviewer who said that the novel comes far too close to crossing into "gratuitous prose." My initial attraction to this novel was, in fact, the language but there really should be a limit to how many similies and metaphors are stuck in a single book. I was close to throwing it against the wall at some points.

What there was of the relationship betweent the two characters I enjoyed but there really is too little of it.

Belimai Sykes is many things: a Prodigal, the descendant of ancient demons, a creature of dark temptations and rare powers. He is also a man with a brutal past and a dangerous addiction. And Belimai Sykes is the only man Captain William Harper can turn to when faced with a series of grisly murders. But Mr. Sykes does not work for free and the price of Belimai's company will cost Captain Harper far more than his reputation. From the ornate mansions of noblemen, where vivisection and sorcery are hidden beneath a veneer of gold, to the steaming slums of Hells Below, Captain Harper must fight for justice and for his life. His enemies are many and his only ally is a devil he knows too well.

Sing a song to die for 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The world created by Simon Green is unique and intriguing. The Nightengale is a great story about a "lost" singer. With demented owners and death all over the place it is up to one man to figure out and stop what is happening.

John Taylor is a private detective with a gift at finding things. Including trouble. He has a "reputation" in the Nightside, good or bad is another story in itself.

I highly recommend this series of books to anyone with an open mind.

Urban fantasy at its best 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the third book in the Nightside series and all I can say is the series just keeps getting better. I picked up the first one in the series on a whim and loved it so much I bought the next four through Amazon. The Nightingale's Lament is fabulous. The character development is great. This book as with the other is funny, poignant and horrifying at turns. Though many of the characters our completely outlandish they have such an element of truth and realness at their cores that they are believable. I would highly recommend this series to those that like their urban fantasy with a touch of hope and heart. I would recommend this series to fans of Charles De Lint.
