The Perfect Place To Start 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is perfect for the beginner programmer. Whether you have prior experience or not, you will come away with useful information and valuable experience. I have read it through once, and am now going back through and working on the sample code you develop. I have never had so much fun, nor have I ever found a book that did a better job of being informative but not too much. He works you from Hello World to a simple but graphic game, teaching you Python, programming convention and how to apply what you have learned to several types of situations. I cannot say how much I love this book, or how great it has been to finally find an author who can get the job done. Five stars, only because that's the highest I can give!

Very Good Book 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I used this book for a course in Computer Architecture. Except for one chapter, I read the entire book and I practiced almost all the exercises. As a novice reader, I liked the book very much. The book is very well organized, chapters are laid out in logical sequence and the writing style is very clear. Many illustrations are presented in the book that make it easy to understand concepts. Many examples are presented in special cases that help the student understand complicated stuff. Overall I am very much pleased with this book. The only reason I give it four stars instead of five is because the answers to the exercises listed at the back of the book had errors in them (I confirmed this fact after checking with my instructor) and these are not fixed even in the last edition. Highly recommended to those who are new to this topic.

Editorial Review:

The Essentials of Computer Organization and Architecture was written to provide a textbook that incorporated all of the necessary organization and architecture topics, yet was concise enough to allow the material to be covered in one semester. This book covers all the core topics, including digital logic, data representation, machine-level language, general organization, assembly language programming, CPU organization, memory organization and input/output devices. The goal of The Essentials of Computer Organization Architecture is to allow the students to tie the hardware knowledge covered in this book to the concepts learned in their introductory programming classes to give a complete and thorough picture of how hardware and software fit together.

Good Introduction to C++ Using Games 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

(In reference to 1st Edition) As my title suggests this book is a pretty good introduction to C++ using basic games as the subject of the examples and exercises. Its main focus is on teaching the fundamental aspects of C++ for beginners and how to use the Standard Template Library (STL). Creating games is not really the focus as much as the the chosen subject of the examples and lessons. That said, what this book does, and does fairly well in my experience, is give a good overview and introduction to C++ and how it can be used to create the basic flow structure of a game program. Console text output is the focus, not windows programming. Those with more programming experience and looking for material on 2D or 3D graphics, or event scripting and control using C++, would be better served by another text as it does not address these subjects at all.

I have used this book successfully to help teach teens fundamental C++ and the basics of game programming (within the limits described). It is an easy step from here to go to basic text adventures and RPGs, and a then onto adding graphics, etc. as a more advanced topic (using other texts). This is really a natural progression for someone who wants to learn programming and games, but perhaps not for someone who wants to design games from an art or interaction perspective. More advanced topics such as AI, graphics, and scripting can really only be learned after one understands basic programming (in C++ or another language) and the basic of how game programs are structured.

I have found many students do not necessarily understand what it means to "program games" or how programming relates to game design and implementation. Beginning C++ Game Programming is a good text but if you are already a programmer and/or not interested in the basic code structure of games then perhaps you should find another book.

Bottom Line: Good choice for a real beginner, who is really interested in learning programming because of games, but not a good choice if you are an experienced programmer or want to make your own 2D or 3D video game "right now".

Editorial Review:

What is it that sets games apart from other forms of entertainment, keeping players coming back for more? Interactivity. The ability to control the outcome. Programming is an integral part of that interactivity, and C++ is a vital skill in programming for games. Beginning C++ through Game Programming, Second Edition will provide you with the core skills you need to begin programming with C++ specifically as it relates to games. You'll reinforce each new skill by creating small games along the way, and you'll put these skills to the test with one ambitious game project at the end. By the time you finish, you'll have a solid foundation in the programming language of the professionals!

Disappointing 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I got this book knowing it would be Basic based however I figured I could pick up some technique and knowledge anyway. I found the book to be vague and superficial. Lacking detail on the examples provided while lacking good examples.

Editorial Review:

The computer revolution has made it easy for people with little to no technical training to use a computer for such everyday tasks as typing a letter, saving files, or recording data. But what about more imaginative purposes such as starting your car, opening a door, or tracking the contents of your refrigerator? "Physical Computing" will not only change the way you use your computer, it will change the way you think about your computer—how you view its capabilities, how you interact with it, and how you put it to work for you. It’s time to bridge the gap between the physical and the virtual—time to use more than just your fingers to interact with your computer. Step outside of the confines of the basic computer and into the broader world of computing.
