Far From the Enchanted Woods 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As this book opens, Harry Dresden, Chicago's only wizard, is deeply depressed. For months, he has struggled to find a cure for his girlfriend Susan, bitten by a vampire at the end of book 3 of the Dresden Files. He's let everything else go, including paying the rent and taking a shower, but he's no closer to finding a solution. Little does he know that life is about to get worse. It starts with a rain of toads in Lake Meadow Park south of the Loop and then, to cap off a really crummy day, the new client in Harry's office is Mab, the Winter Queen of Faerie.

She wears a really hot power suit and moderately high heels.

Jim Butcher's the real wizard. From the White Council of Wizards meeting in the McCormick Convention Center to a deadly battle with a foul chlorofiend (plant monster) in the chain link enclosure at Walmart, Butcher enchants with the magical adventures of a wizard who, when the chips are down, taunts his foes with Roadrunner "beep, beep" noises.

Other than that, this is your typical noir, wise-cracking-detective-with-attitude murder mystery set in Chicago. Lots of violence and the occasional werewolf or changling assistant. This book is WICKED good fun.

Editorial Review:

Private detective/wizard-for-hire Harry Dresden is suckered into tangling in the affairs of Faerie, where the fate of the entire world-and his soul-are at stake.

Surprisingly good 5 out of 5 stars.

I was apprehensive at first, several of my friends love this series but their descriptions didn't sound that appealing. They gave me the first copy and I must say that 1/4 of the way through the book I was totally hooked. Some parts of the mystery were a bit predictable, I figured out what was going on early in the story, but even still it was an entertaining and exciting ride all the way through. I quickly went out and bought the next 2 books in the series as soon as I finished.

Harry Dresden--Wizard
Lost items found. Paranormal investigations.
Consulting. Advice. Reasonable rates.
No Love Potions, Endless Purses, Parties, or Other Entertainment.

Harry Dresden is the best at what he does. Well, technically, he's the only at what he does. So when the Chicago P.D. has a case that transcends mortal creativity or capability, they come to him for answers. For the "everyday" world is actually full of strange and magical things--and most of them don't play too well with humans. That's where Harry comes in. Takes a wizard to catch a--well, whatever.

There's just one problem. Business, to put it mildly, stinks. So when the police bring him in to consult on a grisly double murder committed with black magic, Harry's seeing dollar signs. But where there's magic, there's a black mage behind it. And now that mage knows Harry's name. And that's when things start to get... interesting.

Magic. It can get a guy killed.

Great read!! 5 out of 5 stars.

If you like to read about vampire slayers, there's none better than Anita Blake the main character!!!

Bloody Good 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Geez, I'm running out of things to say about these books. Let's see: Anita has stopped seeing Jean-Claude as a monster, because she had yet another direct contrast between Jean-Claude and some real monsters -- several of them, in fact, and each was nastier and more gruesome than the last. We start with Xavier, the vampire pedophile who likes to kidnap young boys, rape and torture them, and then turn them into vampires so he can keep doing it presumably forever; right after him we get Janos and his twin rotting beauties -- and oh MAN was that one of the most horrible things I've ever read -- and then Serephina and her damned evil arrogance and thirst for power, and finally we see Rawhead and Bloody Bones, who kills children who have been naughty because that's who he is -- that's what he does. And then on the other hand we have Jean-Claude. Who is really -- annoying. Suddenly he doesn't seem that bad.

The characterization still progresses; Anita steps back from her changing self, horrified about what she may be becoming, and returns somewhat to her former self who doesn't really want to marry Richard and who has enough faith to use a cross against vampires and prays when she has the chance. In the meantime, Jean-Claude seems to mellow in his obnoxious pursuit of Anita; I think since he had some evidence that it isn't truly hopeless, that she can have feelings for him apart from lust -- she is willing to save his life, which is a big improvement from when she sold him out in Circus of the Damned -- he is willing to slow down and be patient; it seems the worst parts of his wooing were because he was desperate for something, anything, that would give him the will to continue. I was glad to see Larry, the new animator and apprentice Anita, turning into a person of his own, strong enough to disagree with Anita along with intelligent enough to listen to her when she makes sense; it was fun to watch their changing relationship. I didn't care for the Bouviers, but not because they were badly done characters, just because Magnus was a scumbag and Dorcas was irritating and has a terrible name. Rawhead and Bloody Bones was extremely cool, as was his place in the plot.

But it seems to me now that the strongest part of these books, apart from the evolving characters, is not the plots, as good as those are; it's the memorable moments. I don't think I've read another series that has so many scenes that strike me and stick with me. In past books it has been the murder scenes in The Laughing Corpse, along with the uber-zombies in that one; the lamia-in-the-cave scene and the child vampire working for Alejandro in Circus of the Damned, and the snuff film in Lunatic Cafe. Oh yeah -- and the swarm of stuffed penguins. Gotta love that. Now this book adds two to the list: the scene with the sheriff and his wife, which almost killed me, and the scene when Pallas and Bettina (worst . . . name . . . EVER) raped Jason, which has definitely ruined the sexiness of vampires for me. Larry asked Anita how she can kiss and touch Jean-Claude after seeing that, and I know it's because she sees him as something other, as somehow alive despite being dead, but I'm on Larry's side. If that's what happens when you get snuggly with vampires, then that is the end of that fantasy. Forever and ever. Luckily for me, the vampires in these books other than Jean-Claude and Willie McCoy are so freaking unbelievably obnoxious with their jaded cruelty and their impossible arrogance that there was never much fantasy to begin with.

We'll see where they go from here.

Editorial Review:

When Anita Blake's boss at Animators, Inc., informs her that she's expected to raise 300-year-old zombies from a field of jumbled bones just to settle a land dispute, she's understandably annoyed. But as soon as she arrives in Branson, Missouri, to do the deed, the job gets more interesting. A psychotic sword-wielding vampire starts committing multiple murders in the area, and Anita must call on Jean-Claude, her powerful fanged suitor, for help. As always, Anita prevails over the undead, keeping Jean-Claude at arm's length, clearing the cemetery land of an ancient enchantment, and nailing the vampiric killer in one fell swoop.

Leaves me wanting another.. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I've fallen in love with the Rachel Morgan series. I'm not going to recap the book (that's been done many times over). I like the dynamics between Rachel and Trent. This book got into more of Rachel's past and where she came from. I was really hoping that the mystery of Kisten's death would have been solved but it was not. I enjoyed learning more about the underworld. Overall, this book was a great addition to the series and I can't wait to learn more about the Hallows!!

Editorial Review:

To save the lives of her friends, Rachel did the unthinkable: she willingly trafficked in forbidden demon magic. And now her sins are coming home to haunt her.

As Rachel searches for the truth behind a terrifying murder, an even greater menace threatens, for the demon Algaliarept will stop at nothing to claim her, and the discovery of a shocking family secret throws Rachel's entire life into question. If she is ever to live free, Rachel must first walk willingly into the demonic ever-after in search of long-lost ancient knowledge.

But when you dance with demons, you lay your soul on the line . . . and there are some lines that should never be crossed.

Queen Mab's niece, Fiona, has long been bored to tears by the intrigues of Court life. She'd prefer to cut loose at a punk club, knock back a few Thai beers, and hook up with a likely lad of similar interests. But when Fiona goes AWOL, she only gets as far as Manhattan's Inwood Park before a nasty demon nearly puts a permanent crimp in her plans—and a dark stranger sparks her desire...

All work and no play make Tobias Walker one cranky werewolf. After six months of doing his part to keep the peace during the delicate negotiations between the Others and humankind, he'd like nothing more than a good night's sleep—preceded by an enthusiastic mating session. The alluring woman he rescues in the park might be the answer to his most lustful prayers, but only if they can both stay alive long enough to find out who wants her dead and why.

Now, Fiona and Tobias must unravel a tangled web of treachery that spans branches of the Fae, Other, and mortal worlds, all the while falling into a dangerous attraction that could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship—or the end for them both...

Editorial Review:

Rachel Morgan's back! Bestselling author Kim Harrison returns with a new supernatural adventure that fans of Laurell K. Hamilton and Charlaine Harris won't want to miss.

Some days, you just can't win. Witch and former bounty hunter Rachel Morgan's managed to escape her corrupt company, survive living with a vampire, start her own runner service, and face down a vampire master.

And there's a greater evil still. To put the vampire master behind bars and save her family, Rachel made a desperate bargain and now there's hell to pay—literally. For if Rachel cannot stop him, the archdemon Algaliarept will pull her into the sorcerous ever-after to forfeit her soul as his slave. Forever.

First Person 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This won't be much of a review because I didn't read the book. I guess I didn't research it enough when I got Witchling. It is written in the first person and I don't prefer books like that. Just want to put this out there for other people like me.

A good plot wasted on bad writing 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Witchling had the potential to be a good book, or at least an intrueging one. The plot, involving fairies, shapeshifters, vampires, Tam Lin, dragons, and ordinary humans who coping with all of the above, could be an incredible read.
Sadly, the author can not write for her life. I had to force myself to finish through to the end. I didn't borrow the second book from the library, even though the werecat-themed sequel sounded like just the sort of thing I like.
Overall, I would recommend looking for a different book to curl up with. Try Ilona Andrews or Karen Chance.

Editorial Review:

Meet the D'Artigo sisters: half-human, half-faerie, they're savvy-and sexy-operatives for the Otherworld Intelligence Agency. But their mixed-blood heritage short-circuits their talents at all the wrong times. Delilah shapeshifts into a tabby cat whenever she's stressed. Menolly's a vampire who's still trying to get the hang of being undead. And Camille is a wicked-good witch, except her magic's as unpredictable as the weather, as her enemies are about to find out-the hard way.

Editorial Review:

I am Meredith Gentry, P.I., solving cases in Los Angeles, far from the peril and deception of my real home–because I am also Princess Meredith, heir to the darkest throne faerie has to offer. The Unseelie Court infuses me with its power. But at what price does such magic come? How much of my human side will I have to give up, and how much of the sinister side of faerie will I have to embrace? To sit on a throne that has ruled through bloodshed and violence for centuries, I might have to become that which I dread the most.

Enemies watch my every move. My cousin Cel strives to have me killed even now from his prison cell. But not all the assassination attempts are his. Some Unseelie nobles have waited centuries for my aunt Andais, Queen of Air and Darkness, to become weak enough that she might be toppled from her throne. Enemies unforeseen move against us–enemies who would murder the least among us.

The threat will drive us to allow human police into faerie for the first time in our history. I need my allies now more than ever, especially since fate will lead me into the arm of Mistral, Master of Storms, the queen’s new captain of her guard. Our passion will reawaken powers long forgotten among the warriors of the sidhe. Pain and pleasure await me–and danger, as well, for some at that court seek only death.

I will find new joys with the butterfly-winged demi-fey. My guards and I will show all of faerie that violence and sex are as popular among the sidhe as they are among the lesser fey of our court. The Darkness will weep, and Frost will comfort him. The gentlest of my guards will find new strength and break my heart. Passions undreamed of await us–and my enemies gather, for the future of both courts of faerie begins to unravel.

Drizzt fan for life!

Not my favorite trilogy, but this is the origin of Drizzt Do'urdon! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I've been an avid follower of Robert Salvatore's work since I was 10 or so years old. I am now 18. Though I am limited to just reading a few authors of the Forgotten Realms world (just started reading Ed Greenwood's books), I see Salvatore's books as my favorites ever. It was because of R.A. Salvatore's "The Crystal Shard" that I made the decision of wanting to become a writer, so I am indebted to this talented man.

Anyway, I own most of his books from Echoes of the Fourth Magic to the installments of Corona and to the Collector's Editions of Drizzt's adventures thus far. And for the listing of my favorites I'd have to say this Collector's Edition as a whole is my 4th favorite.

When I first got into the worlds of reading and the world of Faerun, I picked up the Icewind Dale Trilogy and was blown away. I still think that The Crystal Shard is THE best work of R.A. Salvatore. Knowing that there was going to be an origin story for Drizzt Do'urdon I saved up my allowance(I was young, maybe like 13?) for many weeks, and then I preordered each book as it came.

Let me review each book on its own then I'll give the master review.

Book #1: Homeland
For me this was a very important read, and Salvatore did not let me down on this one. I felt the character of Zaknafein was the strongest in the whole book, and though Drizzt's journey from boyhood to the nearly-invincible fight we know him as is very interesting and kept me turning pages, I felt that other drow were quite flat. Matron Mother annoyed the s**t out of me for she's just the evil drow stereotype. (Which occurs a lot in these books because thats all Drizzt interacts with in this one. I felt that Salvatore could've made the characters more dimensional like Jarlaxle or the Faceless One.)
Action sequences thrilled me and I was on the edge of my bed when I read the last couple chapters.
The cons with Homeland was that, yeah, I felt that the drow could have more tweaking and be more interesting, but no matter; Salvatore accomplishes this with Legacy of the Drow books.

Book #2: Exile
Exile is my favorite out of this trilogy because Salvatore does much better with the characterization as fresh faces come into the fold, and old ones actually find a voice thats interesting. I especially love the journey that we take with Drizzt as he discovers more about himself and finds morals and values. The action in this is much more realistic and Drizzt is seen to be vulnerable which makes for a fun read.

Book *3: Sojourn
Okay, okay, before you fan boys say that this is the best Drizzt trilogy let me tell you what I was hoping for in this trilogy after reading the MUCH better Icewind Dale trilogy. For I was disappointed.
As I read the books of the latter trilogy I wondered what went through Drizzt's mind as he came to the surface and how he came to meet Bruenor. This book does not live up to my expectations, though it is still entertaining in its own right. It's good but not great like Exile or heck Halfling's Gem.
After reading this specific book a while ago, I felt Salvatore was quite rushed with this one. The story itself is what I expected, but the interaction between characters was bland at times. Catti-brie wasn't boring as a younger version of her dwarf-raised self, but she wasn't grand. Only Bruenor and the bounty hunter Drizzt faces are the grand new faces. Don't get me wrong action is still good (not as good as Exile though, or Homeland) but the execution of this important cornerstone of Drizzt's life seemed so rushed that I was thinking, "What? That's it?"
I felt Salvatore could've done more to flesh out the characters that we've come to know and love.

THE MASTER REVIEW

As a reader of R.A. Salvatore, I'd say this is a must-have collector's edition.
As a reader of fantasy, Drizzt's story is one of the best out there.
But as a fan who has followed R.A. salvatore as a writer. This is NOT his best work for Forgotten Realms. Of course this is a must-have to enjoy the story of Drizzt & CO., But to get more into the characters I'd suggest Icewind Dale trilogy as it is much more interesting and I felt all ranges of emotions while reading that.

Otherwise this book is fun, worth the money, and has you cheering for Drizzt the whole time, but for me I'd recommend it with a bitter taste in my mouth because of the disappointment Sojourn left me. Only to those who wish to know the origin of the beloved Drizzt Do'urdon.

Elsewise start with Icewind Dale trilogy to see the reason why fantasy-fans love Drizzt Do'urdon.

Editorial Review:

This three-book set is perfect for collectors and an ideal gift for readers unfamiliar with the Forgotten Realms setting. The Dark Elf Trilogy--Homeland, Exile, and Sojourn--are enclosed in a hard-sided slipcover case featuring the cover art from the series.
