Disappointing but informative...I take back that statement. 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

For the most part this book is informative. If you have no idea of how a basic Operating System functions, or what it's responsibilities are, then this book will definitely clue you in. However, this book seemed to fall short of what the writers promised. For example, the version of XINU described in this book boots from DOS. I am suspicious of any operating system that boots from another operating system and then uses the services of it...it reminds me of Microsoft Windows 3.1. The OS also uses and relies on some of the PC's BIOS routines and services. While that technique makes the OS portable on different PCs, it limits its use only to PCs and hides a lot of operations that (in my opinion) should be shown. After reading it a few times, I found that the book was quite helpful after all. The OS has been ported to many other CPU's. The full source code can be found on the internet. The OS is quite powerful but still is simple (I was able to port the code to run on a 68010 project of mine; seeing the ported versions and the book's theory was enough to guide me). A decent book, it doesn't describe an operating system 'from the ground up', but comes close to it. Sure there are other operating systems out there with open source, but how many of those tell you what each function of the code does and what role these functions play in a OS?

Editorial Review:

An important two-volume series, the first volume describes each step of the design and decision making process, while Volume II adds internetworking and user interface software. Professional software programmers can learn how protocol software fits into an operating system and how VAX software works as well.

Editorial Review:

To deliver high-performance Windows applications, developers need an in-depth understanding of the Win32 GDI and DirectDraw -- but until now, it's been virtually impossible to discover what's going on "behind" Microsoft's API calls. This book rips away the veil, giving experienced Windows programmers the information and techniques they need to maximize performance, efficiency, and reliability -- and to make the best use of Windows graphics APIs and the important new graphics features provided in Windows 2000. Readers will gain a clear, concrete understanding of how GDI and DirectDraw are implemented internally; their limitations, resource requirements, and performance impact; and keys to implementing features and troubleshooting problems. This book is filled with high quality, original, system-level tools, kernal mode drivers, sample programs, and generic C++ classes for Windows programming without MFC. Readers can find out how to build API spys and hooks, detect GDI resource leaks, build image processing software, and more. Part 1 goes behind the scenes to uncover the Windows system architecture and graphics system internal data structure, and provides techniques for spying on the components of the graphics system. Part 2 provides detailed coverage of the Win32 GDI and Direct Draw API, based on the solid foundation built in Part 1. It covers device context, coordinate space and transformation, pixels, lines, and curves, area fills, various types of bitmaps, image processing, fonts, text, enhanced metafiles, and printing.

Don't Buy 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

We have to use this book for the college class that I'm taking and it is a horrible book. I often find myself looking for help on the internet rather than going to this book. It is poorly organized, I have to go to the index in order to find something I specifically need because the book isn't in any order. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. Find another there are many more.

Good teach-yourself C book 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I am using an older edition (I think the 1st) to teach myself C. So far, (along with the mingw32 compiler) I have been able to write several small matrix programs and a small statistical package, soley from using the resources in the text. I started on page 1 with no previous study of C or C-like languages.

I have one complaint. The coverage of fread, fwrite, etc could be more thorough, with more examples. The example given actually doesn't work with my compiler. I had to come up with my own examples to discover how to use these functions.

Editorial Review:

This book provides an introduction to the C programming language. It is widely known for its accurate and precise descriptions, its careful annotation of code, and its comprehensive coverage of topics.  This book includes numerous "Learning Activities" which allow readers to immediately "do it" after they "read it" in the book. This book is for readers interested in learning the C programming language.

Good, but needs editting 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Very good on the level of detail, and incredible on the pitfalls and specific problems they found when actually writing the code for the examples. Be careful, though - a number of the tables (and even some of the printed code samples) contain typos and other minor errors (like missing headings, making one table pretty useless!). You can figure out what's wrong, but if you just use this as a reference and happen to hit a section with an error you might not catch it without reading the accompanying text. I read it through, rather than as a reference, and it was clear which parts of the text had only been lightly checked for the latest edition.

Again, 95+% of this book is really great! And the anecdotes and clear detail on where MS documentation is "flawed" are of terrific value - I definitely am glad to have purchased it, but I also want to point out that if something in it doesn't make sense - you're probably not crazy. It's quite likely to be a typo...

Oh - one more thing. The "Explorer" samples they include were a fabulous idea, and have really helped me figure out what the heck some of the various style (and other) flags really meant. Extra credit for the CD! :-)

Editorial Review:

This book covers all the material necessary to understand and write 32-bit Windows application targeted for both Windows 95 and Window NT 3.51. Unlike other books on the topic, it is a strictly 32-bit book, covering both operating system aspects and user interface topics, including input and output.

Not a very good book for non USB driver writers 2 out of 5 stars.
36 of 43 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book back in July when no other WDM books were available. Overall, I found the book didn't answer any of my concerns and was considerably lacking details for non-USB drivers. For example, there is no explaination on controling DMA transfers. All my NT driver books, have an entire chapter devoted to the subject! The PNP section was repetive but not clear. Overall, not a very good driver book.

Great entry point for beginners. 4 out of 5 stars.
26 of 29 people found this review helpful.

I needed to write a Windows device driver to do parallel port I/O on NT machines and handle hardware interrupts. The DDK is incomprehensible to novices. The Viscarola / Mason book is a great reference, but is not a good how-to. Oney has lots of important information on lots of important topics, but you can quickly get lost in tons of details that don't apply to the task at hand. Chris Cant gets it right in his book. His pedagogical strategy is to actually create a very small device driver, and then study it as you layer on the complexity, and not hit you with it all at once. It exactly addressed my primary needs. Its drawback is that it is not very detailed, nor is it a good advanced reference, so the ideal solution is to get all three books, and use them each for their own strength. But start with Chris Cant's. (He also includes a couple of very useful utilities, one of which is a marvelous debugging tool.)

Editorial Review:

This book teaches the reader about the hardware interface recently introduced for Microsoft Windows, including both the Win32 Driver Model (WDM) and the Windows NT kernel device driver. It offers an overview of driver development, including hardware and software interface issues, appropriate application of driver types, and descriptions of where drivers fit in the new "layer" model of WDM.

Editorial Review:

Many Windows developers still write code as if their application is a single entity that, while it is running, has complete control of all system resources. This legacy from the days of DOS means that developers frequently fail to take advantage of Win32's support of multiple threads of execution to improve their application's performance or to enhance its functionality. For instance, a main thread can handle interactions with the user, while a background "worker" thread can handle repainting the application window or performing some background calculations. But multithreaded programming means more than adding threads; it also requires that the code be thread-safe.

Win32 Multithread Programming explains the concepts of multithreaded programs, thus providing the developer with the knowledge necessary to skillfully construct efficient and complex applications. From basic thread synchronization using mutexes and semaphores, to advanced topics like creating reusable thread pools or implementing a deferred processing queue, the book uses real-world applications and carefully constructed examples to illustrate the principles of multithreaded programming. Some of the topics include:

  • How the Windows operating systems handle threads
  • Multithreading primitives in the Win32 API
  • Techniques for generating thread-safe dynamic link libraries
  • Advanced techniques for thread synchronization
  • Basic scenarios for synchronizing threads
  • Common designs for building multithreaded user interfaces

The CD-ROM accompanying the book features Mcl, the authors' C++ class library for multithreaded programming, which both wraps multithreaded API functions and easily supports more complex multithreaded scenarios. For programmers using MFC, an additional library, Mcl4Mfc, is included for MFC compatibility.

Win32 Multithread Programming is an essential resource for any developer interested in learning about Win32 multithreaded programming in order to create high-performance, effective applications.
