Editorial Review:

S-PLUS is a powerful environment for the statistical and graphical analysis of data. It provides the tools to implement many statistical ideas which have been made possible by the widespread availability of workstations having good graphics and computational capabilities. This book is a guide to using S-PLUS to perform statistical analyses and provides both an introduction to the use of S-PLUS and a course in modern statistical methods. S-PLUS is available for both Windows and UNIX workstations, and both versions are covered in depth. The aim of the book is to show how to use S-PLUS as a powerful and graphical system. Readers are assumed to have a basic grounding in statistics, and so the book in intended for would-be users of S-PLUS, and both students and researchers using statistics. Throughout, the emphasis is on presenting practical problems and full analyses of real data sets. Many of the methods discussed are state-of-the-art approaches to topics such as linear and non-linear regression models, robust and smooth regression methods, survival analysis, multivariate analysis, tree-based methods, time series, spatial statistics, and classification. This second edition is intended for users of S-PLUS 3.3, 4.0, or later. It covers the recent developments in graphics and new statistical functionality, including bootstraping, mixed effects linear and non-linear models, factor analysis, and regression with autocorrelated errors. The material on S-PLUS programming has been re-written to explain the full story behind the object-oriented programming features. The authors have written several software libraries which enhance S-PLUS; these and all the datasets used are available on the Internet in versions for Windows and UNIX. There are also on-line complements covering advanced material, further exercises and new features of S-PLUS as they are introduced. Dr. Venables is Head of Department and Senior Lecturer at the Department of Statistics, University of Adelaide, and has given many short courses on S-PLUS in Australia, Europe, and the USA. Professor Ripley holds the Chair of Applied Statistics at the University of Oxford, and is the author of four other books on spatial statistics, simulation, pattern recognition, and neural networks.

Editorial Review:

This book is a friendly, task-oriented introduction to FreeBSD, a free, open-source, industrial strength operating system that runs on a personal computer (the same computer that runs Microsoft Windows) for users new to both FreeBSD and UNIX. The second edition includes a FreeBSD 4.4 installation CD-ROM.

FreeBSD: An Open-Source Operating System for Your Personal Computer includes:

· installation CD-ROM for the full system plus many software applications
· space requirements, screen shots, and detailed instructions for installing FreeBSD
· descriptions of third-party software applications and how to get them running
· step-by-step instructions on configuring and running FreeBSD, connecting to the Internet,
setting up an internal network, and setting up sound, graphics (X Window), and printing

Based on the UNIX developed at the University of California at Berkeley, FreeBSD is a major competitor to Linux for running Internet servers, the computers that handle electronic mail for many users, provide files for download, and serve web pages.

With this book and the included installation CD-ROM, individual users can install FreeBSD and run a system that goes beyond Microsoft Windows in capability, stability, and flexibility, provides full source code, and makes available thousands of ready-to-install third-party software programs (most of them free) including electronic mail, desktop applications, Netscape, programming languages, graphics, and web servers and other Internet applications.

Editorial Review:

Network coding promises to significantly impact the way communications networks are designed, operated, and understood. The first book to present a unified and intuitive overview of the theory, applications, challenges, and future directions of this emerging field, this is a must-have resource for those working in wireline or wireless networking. *Uses an engineering approach - explains the ideas and practical techniques *Covers mathematical underpinnings, practical algorithms, code selection, security, and network management *Discusses key topics of inter-session (non-multicast) network coding, lossy networks, lossless networks, and subgraph-selection algorithms Starting with basic concepts, models, and theory, then covering a core subset of results with full proofs, Ho and Lun provide an authoritative introduction to network coding that supplies both the background to support research and the practical considerations for designing coded networks. This is an essential resource for graduate students and researchers in electronic and computer engineering and for practitioners in the communications industry.

The Best AWK and UNIX training manual! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

As a computer consultant, I sometimes need to train 'folks' that haven't had too much time in front of a computer. For those souls that have grown used to Windows, UNIX has the potential to strike fear in a way that I've seldom seen duplicated. This text offers the BEST environment for teaching UNIX and AWK that I have seen.

There are UNIX and AWK reference books galore, but none of them take a systematic approach to TEACHING the subject, (no, not even teach yourself, or the Dummies versions). This book reviews each command and ends with a generous question section. (Not just one or two questions at a high level, and not just one really complicated question - the questions build very nicely to the hardest issues.)

If you are looking for a reference book, this will do, though there are others that I would prefer, but if you are learning UNIX and AWK on your own, or looking to teach it to someone else, this book gets my highest recommendation. I have given it now to everyone I have trained and all have had great success with it. I would feel entirely comfortable handing this book to a trainee, and with no further instruction allowing them to code when they've finished. " An absolute gift"

Editorial Review:

Presents a hands-on introduction to regular expressions & grep-including egrep and fast grep. Learn key sed fundamentals: addressing, scripting, plus all the commands you'll need for substitution, deletion, printing, appending, listing, reading/writing, & more. Paper.

The bible 5 out of 5 stars.

99,9% of Plain OLE is covered. No MFC/OWL/ or anyother compiler-dependent technique. It is the must for the serious programmer.
Warning: not for beginners, make sure you know C++ and the Win32 API well before trying the book.

Was a good book but... 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

much has happened since. This is now looking dated. This was *the* original book on OLE, however, with the subsequent advent of COM, COM+, ActiveX, ATL and .NET means that this book is now something of a period piece. However, the underlying concepts still exist in the majority of PC installations and applications in use today (although expect that to diminish in coming years). OLE (later to become COM and later COM+) had some wonderful, ground-breaking features from an architectural perspective but often the implementation details were very ugly (the Registry, GUIDs, non-unique interfaces, reference counting, etc.). Fortunately, .NET seems to have captured all of the good points, very few of the bad points of OLE, COM, COM+, Java, C++ and VB.

Editorial Review:

The UNIX operating system has become a key part of the technology landscape as we move into the 21st century. There are now a huge number of large-scale data management and transaction-processing systems built on UNIX platforms, and UNIX is at the core of the server backbone of the Internet. 'The new edition of this highly successful book for professional programmers provides a lucid and well structured guide to developing UNIX software in the C language, and has been updated to reflect the more distributed environments typical of current IT solutions.

UNIX System Programming concentrates on a detailed study of the UNIX system call interface - the programming interface between the UNIX kernel and application software running in the UNIX environment - and additionally covers some of the more important subroutine libraries.

Features fundamental techniques are developed in depth and are fully supported with program examples highly relevant to the two important standards - the X/OPEN portability guide and the IEEE POSIX standard strong emphasis on exercises and examples throughout

New to this edition
more on signals and signal handling
more on interprocess communication using pipes
more on advanced interprocess communications and the terminal whole section on sockets

From a wealth of experience of developing system and application software, and a real appreciation of the needs of UNIX system programmers, the authors fully appreciate that computing is not a spectator sport. By exploring both system calls and subroutine libraries they give the reader a practical appreciation of when not to reinvent the wheel, as well as a better understanding of the internal workings of this still elegant operating system.
