Editorial Review:

Since its recent introduction, the ZigBee protocol has created an enormous amount of buzz in venues from magazine covers to trade show floors to water coolers. Its promise of providing a simpler, cheaper, more power-efficient WPAN (Wireless Personal Area Network) alternative to WiFi and Bluetooth has opened up new data collection possibilities in application areas from industrial controls to medical devices to intruder alarms. Yet, despite this widespread interest, there is still little information available that goes beyond detailing the spec itself. Missing from the current ZigBee lexicon is practical, application-oriented guidance from an expert, specifically geared to aid engineers in implementing this new technology. Enter respected designer and popular columnist Fred Eady! With his new book, he provides the only comprehensive how-to ZigBee guide available.

·The ONLY one-stop Zigbee resource available- from basics to sniffers to specs
·7 easy-to-assemble ZigBee projects allow the reader to follow along...hands-on!
·Working hardware and software examples included in every chapter

Good Coverage 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is an exceptional introduction to Unix features that most people won't see in every-day programming. The feature that Rochkind starts with may be the most problematic: portability. There have historically been dozens of Unices (sp?), all slightly different from each other. Even today, there are a number of different implementations in use, with small but maddening incompatibilities between them. Rochkind not only addresses the more common ones, he shows the standards-based ways of dealing with their differences.

After that, Rochkind goes over read/write/open/close/ioctl again, dealing with [a]synchronous subtleties that can mean a 100x difference in performance, backed by code samples and timing measurements. The rest of the book deals with multi-process applications, including communication and distributed processing issues. That includes process groups, interprocess communication (with all its system-dependent weirdness), sockets, and signals.

This isn't for the beginner or for the kernel developer, but never meant to be for either. It is a good, readable introduction to protentially tricky parts of the Unix API. I recommend it strongly to anyone building their own library of Unix references.

Editorial Review:

The changes to UNIX programming that have taken place since 1985 are extensive to say the least. The first edition of Advanced UNIX Programming is still used and considered to be a must have book on any UNIX programmer's shelf. With this new edition UNIX programmers now have a one-volume, comprehensive, in-depth guide to the essential system-level services provided to them by the UNIX family of operating systems - now including Linux, FreeBSD, and the Mac OS X kernel (Darwin). All UNIX application programs, regardless of what language they are written in, run on top of these services, so mastering them is essential for successful UNIX programming. And, with a movement towards open-source systems, programmers will appreciate the book's emphasis on portability.

This book is the real thing 5 out of 5 stars.

As an owner of a mid sized WISP, the author has captured the real life problem we experience both from a strategic and field perspective. From antenna alternatives, pros and cons of varying polarization, business issues to consider and multitudes of other factors that must be balanced to support a customer service organization delivering wireless internet services. Thanks! My entire staff was required to read this book cover to cover.

Best WISP guide Available 5 out of 5 stars.

Great Book. The autor balances theory and practice perfectly. I just build a WISP from the scratch. I wouldn't be able to do this as fast and good as I did without the help of Mr. Unger's book.

Editorial Review:

Python is growing in popularity; based on download statistics, there are now over 450,000 people using Python, and more than 150,000 people using Python on Windows. Use of the language has been growing at about 40% per year since 1995, and there is every reason to believe that growth will continue. Despite Python's increasing popularity on Windows, Python Programming on Win32 is the first book to demonstrate how to use it as a serious Windows development and administration tool. Unlike scripting on Unix, Windows scripting involves integrating a number of components, such as COM or the various mail and database APIs, with the Win32 programming interface. While experienced Windows C++ programmers can find their way through the various objects, most people need some guidance, and this book is it. It addresses all the basic technologies for common integration tasks on Windows, explaining both the Windows issues and the Python code you need to glue things together. Topics include:
  • The Python language and the PythonWin extensions
  • Building a GUI with COM
  • Adding a Macro language
  • Distributing the application
  • Client-side COM for output and data access
  • Integration with mail and other internet protocols
  • Managing users and drives
This is a vital and unique book. Python Programming on Win32 is an excellent presentation of Windows application development and a solid illustration of how to use Python in the Windows environment.

ok.. so now you know what Mr. Gates thinks of this. He's obviously quaking. That is who wrote the other review wasn't it? As someone who grew up on Macs and Win16 boxes (after 8080's), I didn't run into Netware until my professional life. I didn't get it at first either. But over the years I have come to understand and appreciate what Netware can and does do - & do incredibly well. There is a good reason that the vast majority of the Fortune 500 use it - as do other mission critical environments like gov't & military & financial that care about things like security, stability and TCO. That said, (ahem), 6.5 is the best thing Provo has ever put out IMHO, and this book is one of the best ways to get clued into what it's about. I have 6.5 in production and have used Netware since 4.11 SFT3 so I know a little bit about it. Try native file access for Unix, Mac & Win32 hosts, unmatched file system security, great management tools, support for open source projects like PHP, Perl, Apache, mySQL, *real* java and directory services that frankly shame AD.. did I mention snapshot volumes or the remote office appliance? Free server licenses? Drives that don't need defragmenting? Clusters up to 32 nodes? But like any great product there is a lot to it & it's useless if you don't know how to work it - or don't know it's there! So buy the book, ok? :) Change is good.
Meanwhile, pay no attention to the raving MCSE. They get like that after a while.
