Outdated OLD material, stay away!!! 1 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book based on the other customer reviews, unfortunately I was very disappointed. This book was written/published before SP2 came out, which makes a BIG difference in the material covered on the exam. Dont get me wrong, this does have plenty of good material, but this is NOT a good sole study guide, this is more of a backup. My advice, save the $40 and go with a different set of books.

Editorial Review:

Fundamentally, computers just deal with numbers. They store letters and other characters by assigning a number for each one. There are hundreds of different encoding systems for mapping characters to numbers, but Unicode promises a single mapping. Unicode enables a single software product or website to be targeted across multiple platforms, languages and countries without re-engineering. It's no wonder that industry giants like Apple, Hewlett-Packard, IBM andMicrosoft have all adopted Unicode.

Containing everything you need to understand Unicode, this comprehensive reference from O'Reilly takes you on a detailed guide through the complex character world. For starters, it explains how to identify and classify characters - whether they're common, uncommon, or exotic. It then shows you how to type them, utilize their properties, and process character data in a robust manner.

The book is broken up into three distinct parts. The first few chapters provide you with a tutorial presentation of Unicode and character data. It gives you a firm grasp of the terminology you need to reference various components, including character sets, fonts and encodings, glyphs and character repertoires.

The middle section offers more detailed information about using Unicode and other character codes. It explains the principles and methods of defining character codes, describes some of the widely used codes, and presents code conversion techniques. It also discusses properties of characters, collation and sorting, line breaking rules and Unicode encodings. The final four chapters cover more advanced material, such as programming to support Unicode.

You simply can't afford to be without the nuggets of valuable information detailed in Unicode Explained.

Editorial Review:

Microsoft’s Component Object Model is one of the most important concepts in software development today. Developer’s Workshop to COM and ATL 3.0 provides an in-depth treatment of COM and shows how to adopt a component framework, namely ATL, to help lessen the burden of repetitive code. Every chapter contains integrated lab assignments that give you numerous opportunities to build COM clients and servers using raw C++ and IDL, as well as the Active Template Library.

The book is divided into five sections, each focusing on a particular aspect of COM and ATL development. The book begins with a review of object-oriented and interface-based programming techniques, then moves into the core aspects of COM, including a full examination of language independence and location transparency. The author illustrates the numerous CASE tools used during ATL development and discusses apartments, COM exceptions, object identity, and component housing, in addition to various advanced concepts such as COM categories and tear-off interfaces. The fourth section examines a number of “COM patterns” such as enumerators, collections, scriptable objects, and callback interfaces. The book closes with an investigation of using ATL as a windowing framework and wraps up with the development of a full-blown animated ActiveX control using ATL.

The companion CD contains full source code for all the labs, along with the official COM and DCOM white papers.

ZigBee is a standard based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard for wireless personal networks. This standard allows for the creation of very lost cost and low power networks - these applications run for years rather than months. These networks are created from sensors and actuators and can wireless control many electrical products such as remote controls, medical, industrial, and security sensors.

Hundreds of companies are creating applications including Mitsubishi, Motorola, Freescale, and Siemens. This book is written for engineers who plan to develop ZigBee applications and networks, to understand how they work, and to evaluate this technology to see if it is appropriate to a particular project. This book does not simply state facts but explains what ZigBee can do through detailed code examples.

Packed with useful information 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an excellent book to learn about Windows from a developer's perspective. It has the most lucid explanations I've read on the Windows operating system, covering topics such as processes, threads, synchronization, memory architecture, Windows messages, DLL injection and device contexts. There is a whole chapter dedicated to strings where the author cleary explains ALL types of strings used in Windows (there are very few books that include this important topic). For those who complain about not enough coverage of the Win32 API, *READ THE PREFACE!*. The author states very clearly that the book is "...not intended to be an encyclopedia for the Win32 API...", the goal is to present "...enough information to get an overall feel for the Windows OS and the Win32 API...". I think he went beyond the stated goal. As for the reviewers complaining about the book heavy slant towards C, it escapes me how anyone would want to read about the Win32 API without expecting to find C all over the place. This is not a book to learn VB syntax or VB tricks, it's about how to interact with the Win32 API from VB, so it's important to learn the details about the API, not about VB. Last but not least, do not expect this to be a hardcore guide to Win32 programming, that's something you just can't do with VB.

Added Dec 12, 2001: After studying the new .NET platform I realize that this book is sadly outdated. You can still use the Win32 API in VB.NET, but there's no good reason to do that anymore because the .NET framework provides equivalents for just about every API call you can think of, and more.

Editorial Review:

The Win32 API, or Application Programming Interface, allows Visual Basic programmers far greater access to the inner workings of the Windows operating system without having to suffer through the steep learning curve associated with Visual C++ style Windows programming. The book is designed for users with an intermediate-level (or higher) knowledge of Visual Basic version 4 or later and a desire to stretch VB into the realm of Windows system programming. Users do not need to have any background in Visual C++, nor do they need to have any previous experience with the Win32 API. This book helps VB programmers eliminate the trial and error process that is usually associated with calling the Win32 API from Visual Basic.

ok.. so now you know what Mr. Gates thinks of this. He's obviously quaking. That is who wrote the other review wasn't it? As someone who grew up on Macs and Win16 boxes (after 8080's), I didn't run into Netware until my professional life. I didn't get it at first either. But over the years I have come to understand and appreciate what Netware can and does do - & do incredibly well. There is a good reason that the vast majority of the Fortune 500 use it - as do other mission critical environments like gov't & military & financial that care about things like security, stability and TCO. That said, (ahem), 6.5 is the best thing Provo has ever put out IMHO, and this book is one of the best ways to get clued into what it's about. I have 6.5 in production and have used Netware since 4.11 SFT3 so I know a little bit about it. Try native file access for Unix, Mac & Win32 hosts, unmatched file system security, great management tools, support for open source projects like PHP, Perl, Apache, mySQL, *real* java and directory services that frankly shame AD.. did I mention snapshot volumes or the remote office appliance? Free server licenses? Drives that don't need defragmenting? Clusters up to 32 nodes? But like any great product there is a lot to it & it's useless if you don't know how to work it - or don't know it's there! So buy the book, ok? :) Change is good.
Meanwhile, pay no attention to the raving MCSE. They get like that after a while.

Editorial Review:

This reference is a fascinating and complete guide to using fonts and typography on the Web and across a variety of operating systems and application software. Fonts & Encodings shows you how to take full advantage of the incredible number of typographic options available, with advanced material that covers everything from designing glyphs to developing software that creates and processes fonts.

The era of ASCII characters on green screens is long gone, and industry leaders such as Apple, HP, IBM, Microsoft, and Oracle have adopted the Unicode Worldwide Character Standard. Yet, many software applications and web sites still use a host of standards, including PostScript, TrueType, TeX/Omega, SVG, Fontlab, FontForge, Metafont, Panose, and OpenType. This book explores each option in depth, and provides background behind the processes that comprise today's "digital space for writing":
  • Part I introduces Unicode, with a brief history of codes and encodings including ASCII. Learn about the morass of the data that accompanies each Unicode character, and how Unicode deals with normalization, the bidirectional algorithm, and the handling of East Asian characters.
  • Part II discusses font management, including installation, tools for activation/deactivation, and font choices for three different systems: Windows, the Mac OS, and the X Window System (Unix).
  • Part III deals with the technical use of fonts in two specific cases: the TeX typesetting system (and its successor, W, which the author co-developed) and web pages.
  • Part IV describes methods for classifying fonts: Vox, Alessandrini, and Panose-1, which is used by Windows and the CSS standard. Learn about existing tools for creating (or modifying) fonts, including FontLab and FontForge, and become familiar with OpenType properties and AAT fonts.
Nowhere else will you find the valuable technical information on fonts and typography that software developers, web developers, and graphic artists need to know to get typography and fonts to work properly.
