Editorial Review:

Recent advances in hardware performance and software technology have made possible a wholly different approach to computational mathematics. Symbolic computation systems have revolutionized the field, building upon established and recent mathematical theory to open new possibilities in virtually every industry. Formerly dubbed Scratchpad, AXIOM is a powerful new symbolic and numerical system developed at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center. AXIOM's scope, structure, and organization make it outstanding among computer algebra systems. AXIOM: The Scientific Computation System is a companion to the AXIOM system. The text is written in a straightforward style and begins with a spirited foreword by David and Gregory Chudnovsky. The book gives the reader a technical introduction to AXIOM, interacts with the system's tutorial, accesses algorithms newly developed by the symbolic computation community, and presents advanced programming and problem solving techniques. Eighty illustrations and eight pages of color inserts accompany text detailing methods used in the 2D and 3D interactive graphics system, and over 2500 example input lines help the reader solve formerly intractable problems.

From the author: Collecting and organizing all of the architectural information for a system is a challenge faced by information technology (IT) architects. Transforming that information into models of a viable architecture and keeping associated work products consistent and up to date is an even greater challenge. Despite this, model-centric architectural methods are not as widely adopted or as closely followed as they could be, partly due to a lack of appropriate tools. The Architects' Workbench (AWB) is a prototype tool that addresses these problems and supports the creative process of architectural thinking and modeling. This paper presents key AWB innovations and discusses how their design was motivated by insights into architectural work and feedback from IT architects. We describe the design of AWB itself as a metamodel-driven and method-based tool, and we report on experience from the use of AWB in production environments.

From the supplier: IBM continues to take an active role in providing continuing education, including college degree programs, to its employees through its Corporate Educational Network. The computer-assisted instruction provided by CENET is enhanced by a mixture of satellite communications, telecommunications, multimedia technology and the extensive utilization of IBM PS/2 microcomputers. CENET's cost effectiveness stems from the fact that employees in remote locations can participate interactively in courses by utilizing a combination of satellite technology and their own desktop systems. CENET is an ideal curricular environment for teachers, who are empowered to design their own courses and have a wide range of multimedia-based presentation tools to choose from. Typical components include an electronic blackboard called the Video Writer, cameras and slides.
