Editorial Review:

  • Why do our headaches persist after taking a one-cent aspirin but disappear when we take a 50-cent aspirin?
  • Why does recalling the Ten Commandments reduce our tendency to lie, even when we couldn't possibly be caught?
  • Why do we splurge on a lavish meal but cut coupons to save twenty-five cents on a can of soup?
  • Why do we go back for second helpings at the unlimited buffet, even when our stomachs are already full?
  • And how did we ever start spending $4.15 on a cup of coffee when, just a few years ago, we used to pay less than a dollar?

When it comes to making decisions in our lives, we think we're in control. We think we're making smart, rational choices. But are we?

In a series of illuminating, often surprising experiments, MIT behavioral economist Dan Ariely refutes the common assumption that we behave in fundamentally rational ways. Blending everyday experience with groundbreaking research, Ariely explains how expectations, emotions, social norms, and other invisible, seemingly illogical forces skew our reasoning abilities.

Not only do we make astonishingly simple mistakes every day, but we make the same types of mistakes, Ariely discovers. We consistently overpay, underestimate, and procrastinate. We fail to understand the profound effects of our emotions on what we want, and we overvalue what we already own. Yet these misguided behaviors are neither random nor senseless. They're systematic and predictable—making us predictably irrational.

From drinking coffee to losing weight, from buying a car to choosing a romantic partner, Ariely explains how to break through these systematic patterns of thought to make better decisions. Predictably Irrational will change the way we interact with the world—one small decision at a time.

To understand this company's success, first understand its DNA 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I read this book when it was first published in 2004 and recently re-read it, curious to know how well Jeffrey Liker's explanation of Toyota's management principles and lean production values have held up. My conclusion? Very well.

No good purpose would be served by merely listing the 14 management principles, out of context. Liker devotes a separate chapter to each, carefully explaining not only what it is but also how it guides and informs everyone at all levels and in all areas of the Toyota organization. What Liker also accomplishes, and what cannot be adequately summarized in a review such as this, is to explain how all 12 principles are interdependent. Together, they serve as the company's DNA. In the Preface, he recalls asking Fujio Cho (President of Toyota Motor Company) what was unique about his company's remarkable success. His answer was quite simple: "The key to the Toyota Way and what makes Toyota stand out is not any of the individual elements...But what is important is having all the elements together as a system. It must be practiced every day in a very consistent manner." To understand Toyota's success, therefore, it is important to understand that lean production is not a methodology, it is literally a way of life.

The 14 principles are divided into four sections:

Having a long-term philosophy that drives a long-term approach to building a learning organization

Absolute faith that the right process will produce the right results

Adding value to the organization by developing its people and partners

Continuously solving root problems to drive organizational learning

As Liker points out, it is important to understand that the Toyota Production System is not the Toyota Way. TPS is the most systematic and highly developed example of what the principles of the Toyota Way can accomplish. The Toyota Way consists of the foundational principles of the Toyota culture, which allows the TPS to function so effectively.

How does lean improvement differ from traditional process improvement? "Briefly, wheras the traditional approach to process improvement focuses on local efficiencies, in a lean improvement initiatuve, most of the progress comes from a large number of non-value steps being squeezed out. For example, overproduction, delays, and wasted motion. In fact, the ultimate goal of lean manufacturing is to apply the ideal of one-piece flow to all business operations, from product design to launch, order taking, physical production, and shipment."Some of the differences are subtle but no less significant.

To repeat, anyone can read this book and then uncerstand what the Toyota Way is. Possessing a gourmet chef's recipe, however, does not ensure that a gourmet meal will be prepared. Toyota has its own way. Other companies must develop theirs based on their own "roots." In other words, lead from their traditional strengths but not be limited by them. In fact, companies may need to re-invent themselves, not once but several times. That is what Toyota did...and continues to do. Use operational excellence as a strategic weapon and the rewards and results will far outweigh the great effort required.

That said, Liker does provide 13 "general tips." The first is to begin with action in the technical system and then follow quickly with cultural change. Other suggestions include learning by doing first and training second, using value stream mapping to develop future state visions to help "learn to see," and being opportunistic in identifying opportunities for big financial impacts. They are provided with brief but precise explanations on Pages 302-307.

It remains for each person who reads this book to determine which of the 14 management principles are most relevant to her or his own enterprise, and then to determine how to translate each into effective action. Presumably Liker agrees with me that most companies have 3-5 areas in which "lean" initiatives are urgently needed. Developing an execution plan can be tricky, however, because all business transaction involve a process of some kind and improvement of one process inevitably has a direct impact on several others. Here's one possibility, suggested to me by a COO to whom I gave a copy of this book: Read the final chapter, Chapter 22, first. It's title is "Build Your Own Lean Learning Enterprise, Borrowing from the Toyota Way." He thinks that will provide an appropriate framework within which to proceed from Gary Convis' Foreword and Liker's Preface to the conclusion of Chapter 21. That suggestion is worth consideration.

Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out Liker's Toyota Culture: The Heart and Soul of the Toyota Way as well as Matthew Mays' The Elegant Solution: Toyota's Formula for Mastering Innovation, David Magee's How Toyota Became Toyota: Leadership Lessons from the World's Greatest Car company, and What Is Lean Six Sigma? co-authored by Michael L. George, David Rowlands, and Bill Kastle.

This is the first book that explains the business philosophy behind Toyota's success.

Amazon Exclusive: Ken Fisher on The Ten Roads to Riches

Have you ever wondered how the super-rich built their wealth—and whether you could build big wealth too?

The Ten Roads to Riches takes an engaging and informative look at some of America’s most famous (and infamous) modern day millionaires (and billionaires), and reveals how they found their fortunes. Surprisingly, the super-wealthy usually get there by taking just one of ten possible roads. And now, so can you.

Even if achieving super-wealth isn’t your goal, you can still learn how to build more modest wealth following the same successful paths others have used. In The Ten Roads to Riches, renowned investment expert and self-made billionaire Ken Fisher highlights amusing anecdotes of individuals who have traveled (or tumbled) down each road, and shares advice on increasing your chances of success. Whether it’s starting a business, owning real estate, investing wisely or even marrying very, very well, Fisher will show how some got it right and others got it horribly wrong. Whether you’re just beginning to plan your financial future or well on your way, The Ten Roads to Riches can show you how to gain, and more importantly, maintain the wealth you want.

Ken Fisher is best known for his prestigious "Portfolio Strategy" column in Forbes magazine, where his 24-year tenure of high-profile calls makes him the fourth longest-running columnist in Forbes’ 90-year history. Ken is the founder, Chairman, and CEO of Fisher Investments, and has appeared in most major American finance or business periodicals. He is also the author of the bestselling investment book, The Only Three Questions That Count, which is published by Wiley.

Dave Ramsey's "Dumping Debt" CD - Outstanding 5 out of 5 stars.

Excellent, helpful, informative, and humorous. Loved it. Played it for many of my friends and children. Everyone that has heard it said they wished they had listened to this earlier. An inexpensive, excellent buy. A must for everyone.

Some good, helpful material, but would have liked more on the CD 4 out of 5 stars.

A very entertaining and educational recording about conquering debt. Dave Ramsey offers an often funny approach to steps one can take to manage debt. I thought it did go a little long into some of his illustrations (a little too much about cars for my interest) but the actual guidance and steps given were helpful and practical. As a result of hearing this recording I am curious to research more of Dave Ramsey's material.

Great Driving information 4 out of 5 stars.

360 Degree Leader Review (Nursing Leadership) 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The author of The 360° Leader: Developing Your Influence from Anywhere in the Organization, John C. Maxwell, is noted authority on leadership. For nearly 30 years he has addressed audiences worldwide on leadership principles and has authored more than 40 books including the 2 million sellers Developing the Leader Within You and The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. Dr. Maxwell is founder of EQUIP, a nonprofit organization dedicated to training leaders worldwide and INJOY Stewardship Services among many other organizations devoted to training and developing leaders. This review shall cover only The 360° Leader: Developing Your Influence from Anywhere in the Organization published in Nashville, TN by Thomas Nelson, Inc. The text was purchased at [...] for $[...] plus shipping and handling of $[...]. It comes with a complementary on-line self assessment survey accessed by using a pre-printed PIN code. The PIN code was printed on the book jacket, but was not found easily. The on-line self assessment survey was user friendly and directs users to personal strengths and weaknesses. The book includes references such as training material for organizations and teams as well as a list of references for in text citations.
In The 360° Leader, Dr. Maxwell challenges his readers to reconsider leadership. He proposes leadership is not a function of position, but rather a consequence of influence. A 360° leader is one who is leading successfully from the middle of the organization- influencing others in every direction: up, down, and across. Despite the expanse of contemporary literature on leadership today, Maxwell has found a way to reframe and re-conceptualized middle leadership . His target audience is all who are not at the very top, nor at the very bottom of any organizational structure (this includes corporate as well as volunteer organizations).
Maxwell begins by challenging several myths commonly held about leadership including the myths of position, destination, influence, inexperience, freedom, potential, and "all or nothing". He introduces a leadership identification tool which he calls "The five levels of leadership". This tool identifies levels of leadership based on the relational dynamics between the leader and those whom they presume to lead. In Section II, the author identifies several challenges facing 360° leaders. The first challenge is the tension challenge in which Maxwell describes the discord between performance expectations or responsibilities and actual authority. Secondly, he describes the frustration challenge of following an ineffective leader. In the multi-hat challenge he describes methods to overcome competing priorities. The ego challenge discusses how to overcome the temptation to undervalue one's own contribution to the organization based on position or recognition (or lack thereof). The fulfillment challenge tackles the question of finding purpose and fulfillment that's not predicated upon one's organizational position but rather one's personal disposition. Finally, he speaks to the challenge of championing a vision that is not one's own and addresses influencing and leading others beyond one's organizational position.
In Section III, Maxwell delves into 9 leadership principles needed to govern oneself in order to lead up. Section highlights are first and foremost leading oneself exceptionally well, lightening your leaders load, and possessing the willingness to do what other will or can not.
In Sections IV and V, the author describes leadership principles for influencing across (that is to say one's peers) and down (one's subordinates). In Section VI, he describes the value of 360° leaders. Finally he closes the book with a word to senior level management about creating an environment which promotes and inspires 360° leaders.
The author's style of writing comes across very logical and succinct in that he first defines the presumed perspective of his target audience wherein he attempts to build trust by communicating a sense of understanding of shared challenges and frustrations. Building on a foundation of mutual understanding, he offers words of wisdom for leading from the middle, framing it in such a way that by the end of the book one would be excited about the challenges and victories won as a 360° leader!
At 308 pages, the language of the text is simple enough that one with minimal formal education may understand it, yet scholarly enough that it does not come across as condescending and remedial. He uses strategically placed humor to make certain points and even encloses surprise lessons on parenting and personal relationships. These lessons go down smoothly when chased with Maxwell's practical wisdom and sound reason. Throughout each lesson, Maxwell inserts great one-liners on leadership. Whether it's his own, or borrowed from a trusted source, each phrase solidifies a lesson on leadership. These on-liners make the text useful for reference, skimming for a quick refresher, or with no more than a glance, regaining much needed perspective.
The author uses a broad range of 360° leaders as exemplars of applied 360° leadership principles. He uses leaders from diversified cultures, occupations and levels of positional authority to make each point. This tactic is useful for offering his readers a point of contact with whom they might identify.
It is also noteworthy that throughout the text, Maxwell lauds his own 360° leaders by name and offers very public praise for a job well done. In this, he models his own leadership principle "Lead Down Principle # 5: Model the Behavior You Want" and the behavior he encourages for senior leaders to "reward leadership initiative"- one of the 12 activities suggested to unleash the leadership potential within an organization.
Overall this book is well executed, relevant, and timely. It is sure to be useful in years to come.

This is my first, but won't be my last, experience with Coach in a Box. Dr. G. is in his usual form (obviously speaking to a live audience) but this material, in this form, is probably not for those uninitiated to TOC. An outstanding supplement to William Dettmer's Systems book on TOC.

A clear explanation 4 out of 5 stars.

This e-book reminds us Goldratt's literary style: clear, brief and precise.
After reading/listening to this lecture, I fell like I could run any facility in the world far better than the current management does.
This author delivers such a clear vision that by the moment we close the book we could train an audience on this subject.

Broad & insightful 4 out of 5 stars.

Opening with a tour-de-force of insightful simplicity, Beyond The Goal goes on to explore many aspects of business activity with Dr. Goldratt's custom disciplined thinking. Though I have not come through his excellent speaking with a clear understanding of the Theory Of Constraints, I heard many other ideas and had a pleasant time doing so. He covers a straight-forward process for implementing TOC within an hesitant organisation, as well as providing a brilliant technique for validating any effort to apply new technology in business.
