Eye Opening 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is really eye opening stuff. If you are even remotely interested in Open Source Software, this will give you some insight into the mind of Linus Torvalds. On top of being informative it is a really fun read.

Editorial Review:

In this witty and engrossing narrative, Linus Torvalds, the brilliant mastermind behind the latest technology revolution, chronicles his transformation from pale, skinny Helsinki college kid to international folk hero. What began as a childhood hobby soon became the astonishing phenomenon known as the LINUX operating system. A decade after its inception, the LINUX system is still constantly evolving and improving everyday, and Linus describes this in simple, layman's terms without lapsing into mind-boggling technical jargon.

Part autobiography and part business philosophy, Just For Fun brims with biographical detail about the radical spirit and creativity of Linus Torvaids. Torvalds is the first to admit he never intentionally sought fame and fortune. Yet fame and fortune found him when he radically changed the world of technology for one selfish reason-He did it just for fun.

Classic Gates-- Before the Internet was Invented.... 3 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Seriously this is Bill Gates talking about the future but out of 300 pages about 9 are dedicated to talking about the internet -- and most of that is buried with other information. Lots of talk about applications and appliances that did not materialize....one book you need to read because-- then you know that all the gurus DO NOT KNOW everythng !! Wonderful for entrepreneurs who dont' doubt their own paths on their road ahead......

"Not supported" 3 out of 5 stars.
9 of 24 people found this review helpful.

Mr Gates didn't mention anything about Java running on any platform/machine

He didn't mention anything about Linux being free

He didn't mention anything "new" about IBM their Lotus Notes products

Didn't mention anything "significant" about future changes in graphics and companies like Pixar and Disney

He didn't mention anything about Oracle and middleware

He didn't mention anything about the POWER of Ebay, Yahoo, Google and Amazon to get you things!!

What about AOL?, and what about the fact that he didn't even once mention Netscape, the superior company who revolutionized the Internet with their browser.

Don't get me wrong it is a very good book. However somewhat lopsided
I guess I must be on a different road than the one Mr Gates is traveling on.
btw: I happen to be one of the many Microsoft Certified Professionals that invested a significant amount of my own money and time supporting his products.
(10 grand and 12 years)

I think this book is as much about what is NOT in the book as opposed to what IS in the book!!
Buy it anyway! (Maybe used - it is some what dated) You will learn something just by being exposed to it.
The concept of The Web as being "self publishing" was an eye opener for me.
My favorite chapter and quote was from Chapter 8 Friction-Free Capitalism. "Our success in the PC world has come from working in partnership with such great companies as Intel, Compaq, HP, DEC, NEC, and dozens of others. Even IBM and Apple, with whom we have occasionally been in competition, have had an immense amount of our cooperation and support. We created a company that was dependent on partners. We bet that somebody other than us would do great chips, somebody other than us would build great PCs, somebody other than us would do great distribution and integration. We took a narrow slice and focused on that. In this new world, we want to work with companies from every industry to help them make the most of the opportunities the information revolution will bring." page 182

Well here are some other technology people and companies you might want to investigate as I am sure they too will have an impact on the direction of the road we will all be traveling: (unless of course, he buys them or squeezes them out)

The web has never been so boring... 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Yes, the book is important because of the role that Tim played in creating the web. It has scattered pieces of trivia and background information that I enjoy digging up from these techno-biographies. But let's be honest: this book is a real snooze-fest. It is only engaging in the mildest sense of the term. One must concentrate hard to keep the mind from wandering. There is no color to it.

Editorial Review:

Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, has been hailed by Time magazine as one of the 100 greatest minds of this century. His creation has already changed the way people do business, entertain themselves, exchange ideas, and socialize with one another. With new online businesses and communities forming every day, the full impact of Berners-Lee's grand scheme has yet to be fully realized.

Now, this low-profile genius tells his own story of the Web's origins--from its radical introduction and the creation of the now ubiquitous WWW and HTTP acronyms to how he sees the future development of this revolutionary medium.

Berners-Lee offers insights to help listeners understand the true nature of the Web, enabling them to use it to their fullest advantage. He shares his views on such critical issues as censorship, privacy, and the increasing power of software companies in the online world.

Let there be light 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 18 people found this review helpful.

IT Strategy studies and deployment of solutions was my area of interest during the last decade. In most cases, especially while dealing with businesses that are geographically dispersed, connectivity has played a key role in deciding on the solution set. Trade off between centralized vs. de-centralized structures, TCO, maintainability and application response times on WAN have been crucial factors in decision making. Going by Eliyahu Goldratt's "Theory of Constraints", it is not difficult to guess that bandwidth availability and costs have dictated the boundaries of IT architectures. The "Last Mile Problem" used to sound like the last post. Not anymore, even in developing countries if Telecosm becomes a global reality. With abundance of cheap bandwidth we are entering a new era in IT Solutions. If Microcosm could pack computing power far exceeding the power of legacy mainframes on the PC sitting on our desks, Telecosm is about distributing this power from the center of the network to the peripheral devices. The ethernet card connecting the "teleputer" dissolves into the World Wide Web; World Wide Wait is eliminated by World Wide Waves. "The Network is the Computer".

Microcosm has multiplied Computing power and Storage and divided costs by million folds. Connectivity between these massive and powerful systems has not kept pace during this phase. Better late than never, enter Telecosm. Fiber and Satellites using light and electromagnetic waves transfer information across the globe at Petabit rates. This paradigm shift in communications is bound to have profound effects on business and society. We will soon be wasting bandwidth as we are now wasting transistors on our processors. Gilder narrates this phenomenon very well.

After reading the first 3 chapters of the book, I decided to revisit my college books on Quantum Physics- Planck's Constant, Wave Theory, Speed of light, Schroedinger's equation come in handy to really appreciate the power of Telecosm. For ready reference the book provides an excellent glossary of all technical terms that help have a quick recap. I would appreciate if the next edition contains detailed notes on concepts like WDM, CDMA and Packet Switching in the appendix.

The future looks so bright that I foresee a global scarcity of sunglasses! But we still have a problem on hand- the limitation imposed by the speed of light. But if God created light, we need to urge with him to create something that is faster. That will need different lines of communication not discussed in this book. Till then, let there be light!

Editorial Review:

The guru of high technology and a man whose "slightest utterance can move stocks" (The Wall Street Journal) presents a clear, cogent vision of the future of telecommunications; what it will mean in our everyday lives; and how savvy investors can get on the bandwagon today.

With his books (including the groundbreaking Microcosm), top-selling newsletter, testimony before Congress, and annual Telecosm conferences, George Gilder has become the premier prophet of bandwidth and connectivity. In this revised version of Telecosm, Gilder takes technology buffs and investors on a mind-bending tour inside the worldwide webs of glass and light, explaining how fiber optics and wireless breakthroughs are pushing new technologies and new companies to the fore.

:-D == (laugh-out-loud funny) 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Now that Dave Barry has alerted me to the fact that Bill Gates wears a zucchini in his shorts, I will never be afraid of cyberspace again. Hahahahahaha...Oops, I'd better use an emoticon here if I want to be cybercool:

:-D == (a person laughing so hard he or she does not realize that a zucchini is sticking out of his or her pants).

Thanks to Dave, I can now display my feelings online, although I'm not certain how I'm going to work in his emoticon, "person who is none too pleased to be giving birth to a squirrel." Before reading this book, communicating with me via the internet was like trying to strike up a casual conversation with Lieutenant Data. I didn't have a clue about all of those nifty acronyms my friends were inserting into their 'instant messages'. I thought ROTFL had something to do with burying fish heads in the corn field and IMHO was an admission of sexual promiscuity.

I also found out why my boss religiously attends the Comdex convention (Dave calls it 'Geek-O-Rama' and 'Nerdstock in the Desert') in Las Vegas every fall. It has a lot less to do with amazing, futuristic hardware and geeky souvenir tee-shirts than it does with the AdultDex convention down the street.

In the midst of this author's signature adolescent humor about hard-drives, bytes and mega-ram, he uncharacteristically inserts a tender internet love story. Frankly it made me a bit uneasy--rather like watching a Three Stooges movie, and just as Mo is ready to whack Curly over the head with a platypus, the Pope suddenly appears and launches into a homily about family values. It didn't work because I wasn't prepared to stop laughing and segue into tender empathy for two middle-aged losers.

Please Dave, stick to your booger jokes, at least in books with your picture on the cover.

Editorial Review:

In previous books he's done Japan, turned forty, and plumbed the "black holes" of home ownership. Now Dave Barry boots up, logs on, and invites millions of readers to laugh out loud as he undertakes a hard drive down the information superhighway.

informative and interesting 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Based on the popular "To Catch a Predator" series, Chris Hanson wrote this book. This is an informative book that all parents should read. About 30% of it is about the TV program and the rest is written like a guidebook. Chris Hanson includes other stories from families and experts, as well. I have watched "To Catch a Predator" from the beginning and really enjoy it. It's great to watch these weasels (my apologies to all weasels) get arrested and I know that this show is doing a lot of good. There is also a spin-off of sorts that started on MSNBC recently called "Predator Raw" which includes extra clips from passed shows. Some have even whispered that because of Chris Hanson's immense popularity on "Dateline" he was partly behind Stone Phillips getting the axe. I don't know if that's true or not; but I'm always happy to see a man with a multi-million-dollar contract who does absolutely nothing get his walking papers. My only complaint about Chris Hanson is that he has done some "To Catch a Predator" parodies which are rather inappropriate and tasteless. In my opinion, he is in no position to bite the hand the feeds him because he should know more than anyone how serious this is.

Editorial Review:

The correspondent of the powerful NBC Dateline "To Catch a Predator" series presents a strong analysis of what some feel is a child predator epidemic and a startling look at the shortcomings of the current systems within society.

Listening To Music 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I like this book because it is concise and uncomplicated. Itpresents the material in a logical sequence. I am impressed that it stresses the importance of becoming an "aware" concert goer. Most musicians discount the fact their audiences must be educated to really enjoy and support the arts.

The book covers many major works and gives listening guides to help the student follow and understand the works. The works selected show a very nice cross-section of different styles. I am considering using this book, at least as a reference source in an introductory music literature course that I teach.

Editorial Review:

For Music Appreciation courses at the college and high-school levels. Listening to Music's step-by-step presentation, accessible and reader-friendly approach, and focus on the music and composers helps students gain the effective listening skills needed to identify composers, their styles, and their music. Listening to Music reflects the successful and innovative approach used in Dr. Jay Zorn's popular course in music appreciation. While teaching his course, he realized students needed a more accessible and reader-friendly text that would cover the genres interesting to them while still teaching the classical repertoire. It takes a listening-based approach, focusing on individual works where the student is guided with appropriate musical and social background in order to understand the relationship to other music.
