A Book Every Dog Lover Will Enjoy. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought Merle's Door because the sub-title "Lessons from a Freethinking Dog" caught my eye. I was in Pet Smart buying a bag of Eukaneuba kibble for my nine-month old Standard Schnauzer puppy named Otto, who is about as freethinking a dog as you are ever going to meet.

Ted Kerasote leads the reader/dog owner-lover on a wonderful adventure into the hidden life of dogs; not simply "what dogs think," from a Pavlovian standpoint, but why dogs are the way they are.

On more than one occasion, this book brought a smile to my face, or tears to my eyes as I learned something new about dogs. This book will bring you closer to your companion animal in a way you never dreamed possible. Dogs are a lot more than pets we shape, mold, and train to our liking; they can be companions with whom we can connnect and share experiences with, if we will let dogs be themselves.

Editorial Review:

A deeply touching portrait of a remarkable animal, Merle's Door explores the issues that all animals and their human companions face as their lives intertwine. Author Ted Kerasote presents the latest research into animal behavior as well as the origins and evolution of human-dog interaction. Kerasote's adopted Labrador mix, Merle, showed the author how dogs might live were they free; the author suggests how they should be allowed to live and the doors that should always remain open to them.

Amazing Woman! 5 out of 5 stars.

For The Love Of A Dog
Patricia McConnell is an absoltely brilliant woman. I've been a breeder/owner/trainer of German Shepherds for most of my life as well as a trainer/behaviorist of different breeds for many years. This is the most complete information compiled I have ever read. I would even go so far as to say it's my "Bible" for truly understanding how dogs perceive all of life. To make it even easier to comprehend, Ms McConnell even gives analogies relating to human behavior. If I could've given it a hundred stars in the evaluation, I would've! A must read for ANYONE who desires to have a real connection with their canine companions.

Loved it! 5 out of 5 stars.

Patricia McConnell is now my favorite writer. This book helps us to understand your dog more. Isn't that what we all want?

So-so. 2 out of 5 stars.

Obviously written by a new Author. The amount repetition in this book can become overwhelmingly irritating. The information it does give is certainly worth knowing, and is why I gave the book two stars.

Editorial Review:

The critically acclaimed author of "The Other End of the Leash" offers fascinating insights into the canine mind---critical tools for a healthy relationship with a well-trained dog.

Wholly Fascinating! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is the most fascinating book I have ever read. The amazing Temple Grandin takes two subjects: autism and animal behavior, and draws comparisons with remarkable insight. She brings the world of animal behavior into sharp focus with examples and explanations and makes it easy for the lay reader to understand. She and coauthor, Catherine Johnson, write with a conversational prose that makes even the most difficult concepts easy to grasp. Every chapter elicits a "Wow".

Although the dry title may put some people off because it sounds clinical and cerebral, this absolutely exciting book holds a plethora of facts and wonders about the animals we come into contact with on a daily basis. A real eye-opener!

- C.A. Wulff, author of Born Without a Tail

Editorial Review:

How is Animals in Translation different from every other animal book ever published?Animals in Translation is like no other animal book because of Temple Grandin. As an animal scientist and a person with autism, her professional training and personal history have created a perspective like no other thinker in the field, and this is her exciting, groundbreaking view of the intersection of autism and animal.

Chocolate warning 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

On page 82 where Geller discusses learning your dog's favorite treats, she mentions that one of her client dog's favorites is chocolate. Chocolate is toxic to dogs. Geller warns against other foods that are toxic to dogs--onions, grapes and raisins--but she makes no such warning about chocolate. This is a pretty serious oversight, especially for new dog owners who may be reading this book because of the Humane Society CEO's good review of it. I might have given this book 3 stars otherwise, but I'm giving it one star just to call attention to this hazard.

Good, but not great. 3 out of 5 stars.

"The Loved Dog" doesn't teach or instruct the reader on anything more than common sense would dictate in dealing with dogs. Geller uses a much kinder method than other trainers, but the book is lacking in depth and detail. Too much time is spent on her past without really connecting the reader on anything more than a basic level. Once the training starts in the book, the author seems to speed through it without taking enough time to get fully into the hows and whys. More time is spent in commenting on all the famous folks that Geller knows and has worked with in the past. The book is definitely a good start to someone new to dog training, but wouldn't be the only book needed.

Editorial Review:

In The Loved Dog, Tamar Geller shows anyone how tochildproof a dog, teach him vocabulary, use treats theright way, play "tug of war" to build trust, make it funfor him to come when called, teach him not to jump onpeople, and much more---using only playful bondingand positive reinforcement.

Seven Cats and the Art of Living 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This is a gentle book, an easy read. Cat lovers will recognize the endless antics, distinct personalities, and uncompromisingly self-seeking behavior of these always amusing companions. The author describes the often devious methods that her cats have used in insisting that they will live with her in spite of her protestations, and she focuses on the unique qualities of each animal.

However, early in the reading, the real depth within the book becomes vividly apparent, and the telling goes beyond the surface stories. As the author explores the challenges and delights of living with cats, she discovers the life lesson each brought with her or him. The lessons learned are universal truths, ideas most of us are familiar with but too often forget in our hurried lives. The reminders of these truths are welcome, easy to accept, and appreciated as revealed through the various tales.

This is a lovely little book to give as a gift to good friends - even if they are not confirmed cat people.

Editorial Review:

Jo Coudert didn't start out with seven cats. She began with just one, Kate, a gorgeous tortoiseshell Persian who knew exactly who she was - the apple of her mistress' eye. But as Jo, a New Yorker, began spending weekends and eventually all her time at GoWell, a small house in rural New Jersey, she began to acquire cats - or more accurately, they acquired her: strays, waifs, orphaned kittens, homeless toms, and cats who came to dinner and never left.

Seven Cats and the Art of Living tells about the cats - Kate, Poppy, Chester, Socksie, Trot, Bitty and Sweet William - who share GoWell with Jo and her dog, Freebie. Their stories are instructive, quietly inspiring and written with simplicity. Through dramatic anecdotes, Coudert shares the moral lessons each cat taught her including knowing oneself, governing oneself, valuing oneself and interacting with others with warmth and friendliness.

Informative, yet easy to read! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I heard the author speak on NPR and thought it was worth reading his book, since I am buying a new puppy. Being a first time owner, I really wanted to know what I was getting into. The book is quite comprehensive starting from the very first day and extending far beyond. I have been able to fly through it and it is not boring like you might think a manual might be. Chapters are well organized so you can skip over non applicable items and move forward... Really gives you a good idea of all the work, time, and effort that goes into good pet ownership.

Not the best puppy book 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

As a longtime breeder of purebred dogs I wanted to like this book but it has too many flaws to recommend it to a new puppy owner. The book is written by a committee of veterinary specialists from Tufts and it clearly suffers from that multiple author approach. Several chapters are well worth reading such as socialization, pet insurance the first aid kit are some that I would recommend but others such as the discussion of puppy nutrition, the Tufts temperament test, young children are not complete or contain incorrect information. It would be nice to have a single book to recommend to puppy owners that would cover all aspects of puppy ownership including veterinary care, training, development, health problems, etc. This is NOT THAT BOOK.

Editorial Review:

Based on cutting-edge research, real day-to-day clinical experience, and unparalleled expertise, the faculty of the Tufts University Cummings School provides the very best information on the health and behavior of puppies. Covering everything from how to pick a puppy to why puppies behave the way they do, Puppy's First Steps is the only book a puppy owner will need.
