Editorial Review:

On September 6, 2007, an African Grey parrot named Alex died prematurely at age thirty-one. His last words to his owner, Irene Pepperberg, were "You be good. I love you."

What would normally be a quiet, very private event was, in Alex's case, headline news. Over the thirty years they had worked together, Alex and Irene had become famous—two pioneers who opened an unprecedented window into the hidden yet vast world of animal minds. Alex's brain was the size of a shelled walnut, and when Irene and Alex first met, birds were not believed to possess any potential for language, consciousness, or anything remotely comparable to human intelligence. Yet, over the years, Alex proved many things. He could add. He could sound out words. He understood concepts like bigger, smaller, more, fewer, and none. He was capable of thought and intention. Together, Alex and Irene uncovered a startling reality: We live in a world populated by thinking, conscious creatures.

The fame that resulted was extraordinary. Yet there was a side to their relationship that never made the papers. They were emotionally connected to one another. They shared a deep bond far beyond science. Alex missed Irene when she was away. He was jealous when she paid attention to other parrots, or even people. He liked to show her who was boss. He loved to dance. He sometimes became bored by the repetition of his tests, and played jokes on her. Sometimes they sniped at each other. Yet nearly every day, they each said, "I love you."

Alex and Irene stayed together through thick and thin—despite sneers from experts, extraordinary financial sacrifices, and a nomadic existence from one university to another. The story of their thirty-year adventure is equally a landmark of scientific achievement and of an unforgettable human-animal bond.

Want to know what takes ideas over the edge? 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

If you work in marketing, like me, you know that traction for a brand is critical and good products have tipping points en route to skyrocketing sales. Malcolm Gladwell's The Tipping Point is a fascinating exploration of makes ideas explode. His anecdotes and research are fascinating, and some of his exploration focuses directly on consumer products, such as the resurgence of Hush Puppies.

Not Reinventing the Wheel 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The book is interesting, with some enlightening stories and amusing anecdotes.

However, I take exception Mr. Gladwell's touting of the small-changes-can-lead-to-big-consequences 'butterfly effect' philosophy as if it were his own. Either he is not very well versed in the world of chaos mathematics (which would be disappointing, scientifically), or he is not giving due deference to all those who came before him in developing New Math. I'm not sure which scenario is more disturbing, but the book has the feel of being disconnected from reality, due to his disregarding of those who established the field.

Editorial Review:

Author looks at why major changes in our society so often happen suddenly and unexpectedly. An intellectual adventure story and a road map to change, with a profoundly hopeful message-that one imaginative person applying a well-placed lever can move the world. Two cassettes read by Malcolm Gladwell.

Should be subtitled "World's Worst Owners" 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I am really saddened to see that the author is profiting over what amounts to me as neglect of poor Marley; and even more saddened that such a large segment of our society seems to think that this kind of treatment is ok. I have 2 Golden Retrievers, including one who is quite similar in personality to Marley based on my reading of the book, and I would never, never, never fathom locking them up in my garage, or leaving them alone for as long as Marley was left alone while they worked. It is our duty as pet owners to know what we are getting into when we get a dog, and Labs (Marley) and Goldens (my dogs) are the least likely kind of dog to adapt well to being left alone all day (and I don't know any other type of dog that would deal well with that); a brief walk and throwing some balls doesn't make up for it. And I am still sickened by his wife beating up Marley; there are no words for that. Poor Marley--it is terrible that the author even subtitled this "World's Worst Dog:" What the heck did he expect given the crappy job he did raising and taking care of him? My Golden who was similar in personality to Marley would be acting the exact same way. You don't have to be Cesar Milan to figure that one out, its just basic common sense, which far too many dog owners don't seem to have. Its sickening--this type of animal neglect is as bad in some ways as blatant animal abuse. Mr Grogan, you are fooling yourself if you think Marley was a part of your family...if you are indeed a decent human being (which I think you are), you wouldn't treat a family member like you treated Marley.

Editorial Review:

John and Jenny were just beginning their life together. They were young and in love, with a perfect little house and not a care in the world. Then they brought home Marley, a wriggly yellow furball of a puppy. Life would never be the same.

Marley quickly grew into a barreling, ninety-seven-pound streamroller of a Labrador retriever. He crashed through screen doors, gouged through drywall, and stole women's undergarments. Obedience school did no good -- Marley was expelled.

And yet his heart was pure. Just as Marley joyfully refused any limits on his behavior, his love and loyalty were boundless, too. A dog like no other, Marley remained steadfast, a model of devotion, even when his family was at its wit's end. Unconditional love, they would learn, comes in many forms.

Common sense is the key 5 out of 5 stars.
23 of 23 people found this review helpful.

First I would like to tackle the negatives because there are a few. I noticed about 6-8 grammatical errors, if not more, in the book. I found a couple of spelling errors as well such as "he" instead of "the". There is a reference to "Naaman" that should actually be "Nathan". I guess ultimately, the editor is responsible for those but either way, they are mildly disappointing.

Before I was finished reading the book, I kept hearing a lot about the Huckabee vs Romney feud being the major focus of this book. IT IS NOT! There are several references to Romney and they are not pleasant but they are not hateful either. I viewed most as fair criticism based on what happened during the Primaries because their feud was indeed the major story. Some of the criticisms or "jabs", as some have called them, were meant as humor and they are easy to differentiate from the others. There were also a couple of references that I did view as whiny but they were limited.

The focus of the book is about half reflection and half future. Mike talks about and gives praise to the many people who helped him defy all odds and media bias to eventually finish 2nd in the 2008 GOP Primaries. He talks of the struggle of having no money and no name recognition and how they overcame it. He praises the many volunteers and even names a lot of them. He tells of some very touching stories that are absolutely amazing, and they were not even mentioned in the media. The book is worth the price just for those stories alone.

Mike goes into detailed policy on several ideas for our future. He talks about Preventative Healthcare, FairTax, Veterans Bill of Rights, and a few others. He emphasizes how Self-Government is the best Government and how a moral society plays a very important role in reducing the size of Government. He brings up the concept of Civil Service and how it not only benefits our Nation but ultimately, benefits our young Americans. He definitely puts forth some bold and fresh ideas that we should at least think about, all under the concept of Vertical Politics.

In the APPENDIX section of the book, he specifically addresses his own record as Governor in regards to Tax Cuts, Tax Increases and Why, and Spending. These are noted as being rebuttals to attacks levied by the Club for Growth and the Cato Institute.

Overall, I found the book to be insightful and bold which makes it fantastic. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys politics or just enjoys hearing about inspirational stories. This was indeed a journey and not just a group of events.

Note to self: don't buy any more books promoted on Oprah 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I do believe people can benefit from focusing on the present moment more, rather than dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. Duh. Did it need to be repeated ad nauseum for however many pages though?

Also, what's up with this dude just "declaring" that he's all enlightened and s***? Says who?? Him?? Well gee, how convenient! And he just HAPPENS to want your money, too - what a coincidence! Don't you think if someone really was in such a state of peace and joy and love all the time, he would be doing this for free? OK, if focusing on the present moment works for him and he wants to write a book about it, cool - I respect that. But he makes a lot of declarations without telling us how he supposedly knows these things. He seems to be banking on the fact that people are just going to believe everything he says w/ out thinking critically about it. Unfortunately he seems to be right.

He says "humanity is evolving", and this can be achieved only thru focusing on the present moment. I'm not saying this is false, it COULD be true, but how does HE know that? Did God tell him? Is he psychic? Does he "just know"? Well I could claim to "just know" something too, and write a book about it, would everyone just believe me too? Who the hell is this guy, anyway? He doesn't appear to have any qualifications. All I can gather is that he had a "spiritual awakening" in which he sat on a park bench for 2 years in a state of utter bliss and peace. Ummm, did it ever occur to anyone he could be mentally ill? I'm just saying that maybe we shouldn't accept everything this man says just because he says it.

Also, I have yet to hear an explanation for how he was able to sit on that bench for 2 yr and still survive - did he live in a cardboard box? It sounds like he wasn't working. Was he independently wealthy? Oh, that's another thing, if he was that enlightened, why would he just sit there contributing nothing to society for that long? I would think he would be either out helping people, like Mother Teresa or Gandhi or somebody, or teaching people, like Jesus or the Buddha. How is sitting on a park bench helping anything? I'm not saying this dude is a fake, I'm just saying it sounds kinda suspicious.

I think if a REAL spiritual leader ever comes along again, we will know it, b/c they will want NOTHING from us. Not 1 single penny. Why would they? Not saying this dude is ill-intentioned; maybe he means well. But until someone comes along w/ a message about spirituality who does NOT want my money, I take everything these people say w/ a grain of salt.

OK, other issues: 1) He claims that if we are in the "now", we will not harm our environment. Well how do you figure? If we're only thinking about right now, then why would anyone recycle, conserve natural resources, etc.? It seems to me that the only reason people do these things is because they're concerned about the FUTURE of this planet, and the planet we will leave for our children. 2) I have a problem w/ his section on menstruation. I am a woman. As a man, I don't think Tolle really has any right to speak on this subject. Again, how does HE know all this? He just speaks on it as if he's the voice of authority we should all just believe w/ out questioning anything. Yeah okie dokie! Tell me where you're getting your information from first, then I will decide whether or not I believe you. 3) He warns us not to get "caught up" in our emotions. I've done and tried this many times, it only makes things a hell of a lot worse - the emotions are still there - if you don't allow yourself to feel them you're asking for problems. Speaking for myself, whenever I've tried to not feel what I'm feeling such as by focusing on "the present" and deluding myself into thinking I really have no problems, I either am literally unable to keep it up, or if I can, then the feelings just pop up later, often in the form of nightmares. So please don't tell me how to feel, Mr. Tolle, that doesn't sit well w/ me.

Last but not least, if you're a fan of Oprah, remember that a) she promoted The Secret. BTW, if you want a really good laugh, pick up The Secret (don't buy it tho, just flip thru it in a bookstore or something). b) she's responsible for Dr. Phil and c) in her magazines she advertises things like skirts for $3,000, or a coat for your DOG for $1,900! Meanwhile people are starving in the streets. And you're gonna trust the people this woman gets her spiritual advice from?

Editorial Review:

The Power of Now is a guide to spiritual awakening from a man who is emerging as one of this generation’s clearest, most inspiring teachers on the subject. Eckhart Tolle is not aligned with any particular religion but does what all the great masters have done: shows that the way, the truth, and the light already exist within each human being. There is no need to look elsewhere. At the heart of the book is Tolle’s own story of early despair that culminated in a life-transforming experience of enlightenment at the age of 29. He emerged to share insights on the perils of the mind, the power of the present, and the accessibility of one’s true nature. According to Tolle, “To regain awareness of Being and to abide in that state of ‘feeling-realization’ is enlightenment.” “A reminder to be truly present in our own lives.... The result? More joy, right now.” — O: The Oprah Magazine

It breaks down our communication preferences in laymen terms - This is definitely a book that will make you go - Hummmmmmmm. So that's it! You will find that your relationships will improve if your practice the suggestions. My husband and I have both read it and purchased 15 additional copies for our church members. My husband and I had an excellent relationship before reading this book and The Five Love Languages has now enhanced it. Thank you Mr. Chapman!

Rethinking Food 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

As omnivores, this book proposes, our lives are complicated by the question of what to eat in this landscape of plentiful food. The author starts with the most common options--processed supermarket foods and fast food. Tracing these meals backward, he finds an unbelievably tangled system that urges farmers to grow vast amounts of unneeded corn at low prices that are then subsidized by the government. Getting rid of this excess of corn then becomes the driving force behind factory farms, where animals are kept in deplorable conditions and pumped with antibiotics to keep their bodies from breaking down.

Pollan's investigation of mainstream organic farms didn't paint a much better picture, despite the assumption that organic animals are better treated.

Moving toward smaller farms, though, Pollan finds an entirely different attitude, a respect for animals and the rhythms of nature.

Pollan finishes off his quest with a hunter-gatherer mission, and he experiences the difficulty and satisfaction of killing and scavenging a meal from his immediate environment.

I liked the details of this narrative, and the way the facts of factory farming were presented in a way that made the situation clear without seeming to be overly sensationalized. I also liked that Pollan discussed in detail his thoughts about vegetarianism and the reasons why he chose not to go that way, even after seeing how animals were killed and prepared.

Before reading this book, I had a vague idea of the meat industry, of course. Reading this book clarified the situation for me, though, and made me start thinking about the sacrifices I might be willing to make in my own life and my own budget in order to eat more fresh and local foods.

Editorial Review:

This is the story of a political miracle -- the perfect match of man and moment. Franklin Delano Roosevelt took office in March of 1933 as America touched bottom. Banks were closing everywhere. Millions of people lost everything. The Great Depression had caused a national breakdown. With the craft of a master storyteller, Jonathan Alter brings us closer than ever before to the Roosevelt magic. Facing the gravest crisis since the Civil War, FDR used his cagey political instincts and ebullient temperament in the storied first Hundred Days of his presidency to pull off an astonishing conjuring act that lifted the country and saved both democracy and capitalism.

Who was this man? To revive the nation when it felt so hopeless took an extraordinary display of optimism and self-confidence. Alter shows us how a snobbish and apparently lightweight young aristocrat was forged into an incandescent leader by his domineering mother; his independent wife; his eccentric top adviser, Louis Howe; and his ally-turned-bitter-rival, Al Smith, the Tammany Hall street fighter FDR had to vanquish to complete his preparation for the presidency.

"Old Doc Roosevelt" had learned at Warm Springs, Georgia, how to lift others who suffered from polio, even if he could not cure their paralysis, or his own. He brought the same talents to a larger stage. Derided as weak and unprincipled by pundits, Governor Roosevelt was barely nominated for president in 1932. As president-elect, he escaped assassination in Miami by inches, then stiffed President Herbert Hoover's efforts to pull him into cooperating with him to deal with a terrifying crisis. In the most tumultuous and dramatic presidential transition in history, the entire banking structure came tumbling down just hours before FDR's legendary "only thing we have to fear is fear itself" Inaugural Address.

In a major historical find, Alter unearths the draft of a radio speech in which Roosevelt considered enlisting a private army of American Legion veterans on his first day in office. He did not. Instead of circumventing Congress and becoming the dictator so many thought they needed, FDR used his stunning debut to experiment. He rescued banks, put men to work immediately, and revolutionized mass communications with pioneering press conferences and the first Fireside Chat. As he moved both right and left, Roosevelt's insistence on "action now" did little to cure the Depression, but he began to rewrite the nation's social contract and lay the groundwork for his most ambitious achievements, including Social Security.

From one of America's most respected journalists, rich in insights and with fresh documentation and colorful detail, this thrilling story of presidential leadership -- of what government is for -- resonates through the events of today. It deepens our understanding of how Franklin Delano Roosevelt restored hope and transformed America.

The Defining Moment will take its place among our most compelling works of political history.

Do you have influence? 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Originally published in 1936, How to Win Friends and Influence People is the archetype of the practical human relations handbook. It is based on courses in public speaking that had been taught in adult education by Dale Carnegie since 1912 (and to put to rest a popular assumption, he was no relation to the magnate Andrew Carnegie). It is an unusual little book, written in a highly personalized, colloquial style that is reminiscent of a lecture. What's separates this book from others that have come and gone since the 1930s is it's timeless. It is written with a certain earnestness: Carnegie was a big believer in sincerity when it came to dealing with other people. As you read it, you'll find it incredible how easily you relate to the suggestions of a man that penned them more than 70 years ago.

The book opens with fundamental techniques for dealing with people, such as refraining from criticism, expressing sincere appreciation, making people like you by smiling, remembering names, and being a good listener. Final sections describe approaches for persuading people to your way of thinking and how to change people without causing offense or resentment. These positive principles are stated succinctly and illustrated with pertinent, if occasionally outmoded, anecdotes.

While critics have charged that Carnegie emphasized good manners and friendliness over proficiency, the author clearly states that his target audience is competent individuals who are less than successful because they lack people skills, a group that would be well served by his sensible guidance. This book was designed with professionals in mind, and designed to help professional people do better in business by helping them make social contacts and improve their speaking skills. I know that few books have helped me in my career as much as this one.

Another book I very strongly recommend because it's an incredible pairing to Carnegie that has helped me immensely is The Emotional Intelligence Quick Book
