For Heartless Corporate-Drones only 1 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I read about this book in an in-flight magazine and thought it very much embodied my view of life: Don't delay your happiness or gratification until retirement. Seize the day and live it up now!

However, I was terribly disappointed. First of all, definitely heed the Warning printed on the back of the book. I didn't even notice the warning until it was too late. But there it was the whole time: "WARNING: DO NOT READ THIS BOOK UNLESS YOU WANT TO QUIT YOUR JOB"

I'm willing to quit my job, but you have to REALLY want to quit your job in order to do what this book says. You also have to have a meaningless job that requires almost ZERO work. I don't keep myself busy with busy-work at my job. I am genuinely busy with PRODUCTIVE, results-oriented work.

I'm a mid-level manager at a large non-profit organization. A lot of my job consists of interviewing children and adults for our programs. This is not something I can out-source to India. The interviews have to be done in-person and I have to follow-up in-person.

Even if I did have a job I could out-source to India, I wouldn't want to. To me, that is rather exploitive of a developing nation's people.

Additionally, one of the suggested methods to becoming part of the "new Rich" seems basically to scam people online. I think BrainQUICKEN (the author's road to riches) is very much a scam.

Finally, the author seems to dismiss seeking a deeper meaning to life. To me, exploiting people in a developing country, being completely lazy, and scamming people out of their money is not ethical and certainly not what I would recommend to anyone!

I'm 28 and I've taken a four-month vacation in Guatemala and Honduras, scuba dived in the Galapagos, completed a study tour in Israel, and spent a month conducting research in Ghana. I've traveled extensively on five continents. And yet I found this book absolutely INFURIATING.

If you are a corporate drone in a totally meaningless and worthless job, and you are free of the burden of any morals and ethics, this book is for you! Everyone else, move along.

Editorial Review:

Tim Ferriss is an extraordinary young man on a mission. The twenty-eight-year-old serial vagabond and successful entrepreneur has been teaching a wildly popular course at Princeton University for the past four years: a how-to and why-to guide to throwing out the old methods for success (balancing life and work, retiring well, having a great nest egg) and replacing them with an entirely new way of living.

The Four-Hour Work Week explains what a lifestyle entrepreneur is and why you should want to become one. It teaches you how to kill your job and design a life, the 80/20 rule and how it increases productivity, how to replace your dreams with goals, and more. Listeners can lead a rich life by working only four hours a week, freeing up the rest of their time to spend it living the lives they want.

Not Accurate 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 7 people found this review helpful.

There are things in this book that are inaccurate. I can only speak to the religious section because it is a subject I know well but I know others who have complained about the inaccuracies in the science section. For example, the author mentions that the Hadith (written traditions of the Prophet Muhammad) are widely accepted to be unauthentic. In fact, there is a whole science of deciphering whether or not a hadith is authentic, with many books rating thousands of Hadith. These books are so detailed as to include the character, education, public opinion, etc. of all the people who have transmitted a particular hadith. Needless to say, the subject isn's as simple as the author would have the reader believe. There were also some problems in the Zorastrian section that I don't really want to go into now. I think that with a book of this nature, accuracy is paramount so I would consider such mistakes unacceptable. I would venture a guess and say that perhaps the authors themselves have an incomplete education.

Editorial Review:

Answering questions about the film industry, this work takes listeners on a tour of English poetry, and gives them a handle on 350 years of opera with incomparable wit, style, clarity, and brevity. Here is all the crucial information on these subjects, distilled to its essence and served up with the consummate flair. Simultaneous release with the Ballantine hardcover reissue.

Editorial Review:

From the front lines of the battle against Islamic fundamentalism, a searing, unforgetable audiobook that captures the human essence of the greatest conflict of our time. Through the eyes of Dexter Filkins, the prize-winning New York Times correspondent, we witness the remarkable chain of events that began with the rise of the Taliban in the 1990s, continued with the attacks of 9/11, and moved on to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Filkins’s narrative moves across a vast and various landscape of amazing characters and astonishing scenes: a public amputation performed by Taliban, children frolicking in minefields, skies streaked white by the contrails of B-52’s, a night’s sleep in the rubble of Ground Zero. We venture into a torture chamber run by Saddam Hussein. We go into the homes of suicide bombers, meet Iraqi insurgents, and an American captain who loses a quarter of his men in eight days.

Like no other audiobook, The Forever War allows us a visceral understanding of today’s battlefields and of the experiences of the people on the ground, warriors and innocents alike. It is a brilliant, fearless work, not just about America’s wars after 9/11, but ultimately about the nature of war itself.

Ali G: How many words does you know?

Noam Chomsky: Normally, humans, by maturity, have tens of thousands of them.

Ali G: What is some of 'em?

— Youtube.com After forty years of making a living using words in every medium, print or electronic, except greeting cards, Roy Blount Jr. still can’t get over his ABCs. In Alphabet Juice, he celebrates the juju, the sonic and kinetic energies of letters and their combinations. Blount does not prescribe proper English. The franchise he claims is “over the counter” and concentrates more on questions such as these: Did you know that both mammal and matter derive from baby talk? Have you noticed how wince makes you wince?

Three and a half centuries ago, Sir Thomas Blount produced Blount’s Glossographia, the first dictionary to explore derivations of English words. This Blount’s Glossographia takes that pursuit to other levels. It rejects the standard linguistic notion that the connection between words and their meanings is “arbitrary.” Even the word arbitrary is shown to be no more arbitrary, at its roots, than go-to guy or crackerjack. From sources as venerable as the OED (in which Blount finds an inconsistency, at whisk) and as fresh as Urbandictionary.com (to which Blount has contributed the number-one definition of “alligator arm”), and especially from the author’s own wide-ranging experience, Alphabet Juice derives an organic take on language that is unlike, and more fun than, any other.

Editorial Review:

At age thirty-one David Servan-Schreiber was a rising neuroscientist with his own laboratory for brain imaging funded by the National Institutes of Health. While testing brain-scanning equipment, he discovered a tumor the size of a walnut in his own brain. This is the moving story of how a researcher and scientist who believed only in conventional treatments was transformed into an integrative physician who realized the importance and power of the body's natural defenses against chronic disease.

Dr. Servan-Schreiber's advice details how to find the right blend of traditional and alternative health care; how to develop a science-based anticancer diet (and the small changes that can make a big difference); the top ten household products to replace; understanding the effects of helplessness and "unhealed wounds" both physical and emotional, and how to regain balance; and how to reap the benefits of exercise, yoga, and meditation.

Anticancer takes us on an inspiring personal journey and ultimately guides us to a new way of life.

Unabridged on 7 CDs.

Awesome...A must read 5 out of 5 stars.
28 of 34 people found this review helpful.

Vaclac Klaus, President of the Czech Republic has said that the "Climate change debate is not about science, it is about ideology".

This is clearly apparent in this thoroughly detailed and carefully documented book about what has got to be the best orchestrated scam (thank you John Coleman for voicing that opinion) ever perpetrated on the good people of the world. It shows many powerful forces complicit in this scam including the UN, the world's governments, the now fat environmental groups, the well-funded internet alarmist bloggers, the mainstream media even in its decline, many academics and universities riding the new grant gravy train and the once professional societies for which the academics are the prime constituents. As Chris documented, Dr. Robert Corell, the Director of the Global Change Program at The H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics, and the Environment and a Senior Policy Fellow at the Policy Program of the American Meteorological Society observed candidly and correctly to colleagues at a conference in the early 1990s "we must not miss this golden goose as this field has never before seen funding like that which is going to be involved here."

Even though I have been close to this issue from the science side for decades, Chris's book has profoundly affected my thinking on how and why this perversion of science has taken place and who the real puppeteers controlling the strings are. It left me more worried than ever about the future reputation of our science when the truth becomes clear. I also have enhanced concern for our collective financial security as the policies under consideration can only make the global financial meltdown worse. And it will not be the heating from greenhouse gases responsible. Retirement seems so far away again.

This book is an absolute must read for all decision makers in government and industry who will have a say in carbon emission control strategies, and energy choices as well as all citizens who want to preserve their cherished democratic rights and privileges and save our already battered economies from even more damage from the wrong, costly programs our government seem hell bent on implementing allegedly based on flawed science that is not allowed to be challenged but mainly driven by totally unrelated political or socioeconomic change agendas.

Editorial Review:

This shocking exposé of the hypocrisy, deceit, and outright lies of the global warming alarmists and the compliant media that supports them aims to explode as many myths as Al Gore tries to promote.

What in the world was I waiting for? 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 19 people found this review helpful.

Most decidedly curmudgeonly! Yes, that's it. One of the few remaining people on the planet who hadn't read any of the Harry Potter novels and, like Vernon Dursley, my initial reaction to all this wizard and magic rubbish was a very mugglish "stuff and nonsense". I admit it. As I read the first few pages, my initial thoughts were that this was all quite silly. Where had this Harry Potter phenomenon come from and what did everybody see in it?

But then, very quickly actually, JK Rowling, undoubtedly a graduate of Hogwarts herself, began to weave a most hypnotic magical spell and I was hooked. Transported to that child-like garden of delights at Hogwarts - a land of fantasy, witches, warlocks, trolls, spells, potions, charms and, for the readers, total enjoyment and smiles - I fell in love with Harry, Hermione, all of their Gryffindor classmates, and with Dumbledore's paternal wisdom and I cheered wildly as Harry, the team seeker, dove and swooped in quest of the Snitch during their quidditch matches.

There is a benefit, of course, to having waited so long to read my first Harry Potter novel, you know. I've got six to go and now I can pick them up, one after another, just as quickly as I want to with no waiting for years at a time for the next book to be published. Eat your hearts out everyone! I claim membership in the legion of Rowling's happy fans.

Highly recommended.

Here is a very special edition of the book that started it all: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Shortly after publication, J.K. Rowling's debut became a runaway bestselling award winner, and each new title in the sequence has all but created riots in the streets, as delirious fans chomp at the bit for the latest escapades of Harry Potter and his cohorts. For the true devotee of the series, this collector's edition is a must. Gold foil stamping on an embossed leather cover marks the book as a bona fide treasure. Most exciting of all is a previously unpublished sketch of Harry by Rowling herself! Don't miss this opportunity to collect a beautiful version of a modern classic. Bunch of Rubbish 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book many years ago when our youngest who is now 19 was 3 or 4. It is the typical modern psycho-babble about trying to understand your kids etc. Useless trash. You are much better off going with John Rosemond's "Six Point Plan to Raising Happy Healthy Children". Much more effective tools and practical.
We have 7 children and Rosemond's books were very helpful. If I would have tried to follow the advise in this book, I would have had a nervous breakdown by now.

A thought provoking book 5 out of 5 stars.

I found this book to be very thought provoking and need to read it again and do the exercises to get more benefit from it. It's so easy to interact with my kids 'as usual' - the good suggestions in the book don't always come naturally but when I use them they seem to work quite well.

for desperate moms 5 out of 5 stars.

This is by far the best parenting books I have read. It offers many insights and ready-to-use techniques. It's not like many parenting books with big concepts, which we all know but don't know how to apply. It is full of vivid daily examples with specific ideas to help you respond to your child more effectively. I cannot recommend this book more than enough!

Editorial Review:

One of the world’s most beloved and bestselling writers takes his ultimate journey -- into the most intriguing and intractable questions that science seeks to answer.

In A Walk in the Woods, Bill Bryson trekked the Appalachian Trail -- well, most of it. In In A Sunburned Country, he confronted some of the most lethal wildlife Australia has to offer. Now, in his biggest book, he confronts his greatest challenge: to understand -- and, if possible, answer -- the oldest, biggest questions we have posed about the universe and ourselves. Taking as territory everything from the Big Bang to the rise of civilization, Bryson seeks to understand how we got from there being nothing at all to there being us. To that end, he has attached himself to a host of the world’s most advanced (and often obsessed) archaeologists, anthropologists, and mathematicians, travelling to their offices, laboratories, and field camps. He has read (or tried to read) their books, pestered them with questions, apprenticed himself to their powerful minds. A Short History of Nearly Everything is the record of this quest, and it is a sometimes profound, sometimes funny, and always supremely clear and entertaining adventure in the realms of human knowledge, as only Bill Bryson can render it. Science has never been more involving or entertaining.

Editorial Review:

America has been craving leadership – and at last a gun-slinging, mega-rock star, deerslayer, and patriot has stepped forward to provide it.

Make way for Ted Nugent.

Cocked, locked, and ready to rock, the Motor City Madman, the thinking man’s Abraham Lincoln, has unleashed the ultimate high-octane political manifesto for the ages in Ted, White, and Blue – the most important patriotic statement since the Constitution.

In Ted, White, and Blue you’ll discover:
• Why war is the answer to so many of our current problems
• Why if Ted were a Mexican, he’d start a revolution (and how, since he’s not, we can control our own borders)
• How to put Uncle Sam on a diet (a waste-watchers program for government)
• The Ted Plan for energy independence by 2018 – how to keep America rockin’ into the future
• How to change the world for the better through the power of God, guns, and rock ‘n’ roll

If you care about America, if you want to preserve, protect, and defend the land of the free and the home of the brave, if you’re fed up with lazy, whining, fear-mongering, government-gorging Al Gores, Michael Moores, and Obamaniacs, then you need to read Ted, White, and Blue: The Nugent Manifesto.
