This must be be best parenting book ever written. It's the only one I've read that seems to cover every situation like when you're in the car, what happens when you are out shopping, etc.

BAD! 1 out of 5 stars.

Very dissapointed with this book! I didn't like it! maybe because i don't agree with the technique they use to discipline the kids!

Should have purchased this the day my first child was born! 5 out of 5 stars.

Funny, but falls flat 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a general warning before reading the review: This book is VERY odd, so if you don't like oddball humor, go find another book.

The book's flap shows you how funny it is, as she gets angry with you for not purchasing the book. And there it begins.
The layout is very old-fashioned. The chapters are spread out with many photos and crudely drawn images. Usually these images make you chuckle. The whole book is in full-color, so no guessing as to what color such-and-such is.

The content is hit-and-miss, but generally a hit. It'll make you chuckle, and you'll definately think "what was she on?" during some chapters, and that's the point. But that's not all; you also get a giant reference manual to easy-to-make recipes! Rachael Ray, move out of the way! This book also shows you how to entertain and be a guest, as these are also part of the hospitality boat. You'll eithe laugh or end up scratching your heads at the comedy.

------------over-all grade-------

Writing: B+ - It's funny, but it drags on for much longer than necessary.
Layout: C+ - It's very old fashioned, which is a big turn-off. Full of yellow and greens.
Overall: B - It's a generally fun guide to entertaining, but beware if you don't find it funny or you'll be returning to Borders right quick.

A MUST READ!!! VERY SPIRITUAL & MOTIVATING!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I must say that I was not a very spiritual person until now. I have gone to several churches over many of my 41 years and not one has delivered the message to me that this book has. This book has saved my relationship and given me a completely different perspective on life. I am so interested in learning more about God and have plans to read the entire Bible within the next year. I have already purchased this book for a close friend and my brother. I also plan on sending this book to my children. I urge you to visit the website asscociated with this book to view the wonderful things there [...]. I am in no way associated the author or publishing company for this book. I found this book approximately one week ago after hitting a very low point in my life and while looking for a book that might change my life I found this book the day after a car accident that left me stranded for two days in Texas until some family assistance arrived. Again, I highly encourage those of you who are not familiar with God to give this book an opportunity to make a change in your life.

Editorial Review:

Many of us think of our dogs not as pets but as full-fledged members of our families. If you own a dog—or are thinking about getting one—A Member of the Family is the ultimate resource for integrating your canine companion into the life of your household.

What should you do if you need to leave your dog alone at home while everyone is at work? Are you providing him with the exercise he needs? How can you make sure your children and dog get along well? How do events in the human family—such as birth, marriage, or divorce—affect the family dog? All of these questions and many more are answered by bestselling author Cesar Millan in his new book.

Brimming with practical tips and techniques, A Member of the Family addresses the most common issues and questions that emerge over the course of a person’s lifetime relationship with a dog, explaining what it takes to be a good dog owner. From choosing the right dog for your particular family’s needs to setting the rules of the house (yes, you and your family are in charge) to finding a quality veterinarian and monitoring your dog’s health, Cesar offers essential advice for a harmonious home. No topic is left untouched. With success stories from Cesar’s fans and clients throughout, A Member of the Family includes sections on travel and doggie day care, the needs of an aging dog, and dealing with the death of a pet and its long-lasting effects on a family. A chapter on dogs and children is written from the perspective of Cesar’s sons, Andre and Calvin, and one on the role of the strong female pack leader is by Cesar’s wife, Ilusion.

In his frank, simple, and calm manner, Cesar acts as your personal guide as you build a fulfilling, satisfying relationship with your dog.

Editorial Review:

Is your life out of control?
Do people take advantage of you?
Do you have trouble saying no?

Christians often focus so much on being loving and unselfish that they forget their own limitations. Have you ever found yourself wondering:
* Can I set limits and still be a loving person?
* What are my legitimate boundaries?
* How do I answer someone who wants my time, love, energy, or money?
* Why do I feel guilty when I consider setting boundaries?

Drs. Henry Cloud and John Townsend give you biblically based answers to these and other tough questions, showing you how to set healthy boundaries with parents, spouses, children, friends, coworkers, and even with yourself.

You’ll see vital principles of boundaries at work as Drs. Cloud and Townsend take you through a day in the life of "Sherrie"--first as she lives with almost no boundaries, then as she begins to apply proper boundaries with others in her life.

A Fine Summary 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Writing about music is hard. Over the years, musicians have developed systems of notation for music and yet many musicians have a hard time looking at a sheet of notes and hearing the music. Written words are even more difficult to transform into sound, let alone understanding. We may know what an escape tone is, but we can't always recognize it in listening. All this is by way of saying that even though "The Rest is Noise" is an excellent history of music of the twentieth century, it is no substitute for listening.

The book is primarily about classical music written in the twentieth century. It is organized temporally and then geographically, but the author necessarily jumps around a bit to develop his themes. One of the main themes seems to be the development of atonal music and then the evolution of that music into more current styles. The author will often try to describe a piece talking about its tonality and modulation. Even those trained in music theory may find it difficult to transform the words into an understanding of the nature of the music itself. This is not to suggest that the author is not an interesting writer. His style is sprightly, and surprisingly, for some of the technical discussions, quite interesting. It's no wonder he won a MacArthur award.

The history consists of detailed discussions of the lives of some of the century's great classical composers linked together by stories about lesser composers and general movements, reflecting his original articles on the composers, which appeared in the New Yorker magazine. Although one might quibble that some important figures haven't gotten enough page space, Ross's emphasis seems to be about right, with a few exceptions. One area the author scants is American neo-romantic composers. At the same time the author does not focus on orchestras or audiences, with the result that one would never know from the book that many twentieth century listeners seemed to prefer to listen to more tonal music then that on which the author focuses. Similarly, while the author does occasionally explore what happened in non-classical music before the end of World War II, like the influence of the gamelan or jazz, little of the century's popular music before 1945 is explored.

Ross recognizes that words alone cannot tell the story of twentieth century music and includes a list of thirty recommended recordings. No one should believe that hearing just these recordings will give the listener a full understanding of what happened in classical music in the last century. Instead, I can see that a person wishing to understand the direction of twentieth century music can keep this book at hand, and devote a lifetime to listening to the music that it discusses.

Some critics have complained that the content is too trivial or too difficult. On the other hand, a professor of early music I know, who has little experience with twentieth century music, said this was a fine introduction. I think that's a good summary.

Editorial Review:

The scandal over modern music has not died down. While modern paintings by Picasso and Pollock sell for a hundred million or more, shocking musical works from Stravinsky's Rite of Spring onward still send ripples of unease through audiences. Yet the influence of modern sound can be felt everywhere. Alex Ross, the brilliant music critic for the New Yorker, shines a bright light on this secret world and shows how it has pervaded every corner of twentieth century life.

The Rest Is Noise takes the listener inside the labyrinth of modern sound, from turn-of-the-century Vienna to bohemian Paris, from Hitler's Germany and Stalin's Russia to downtown New York in the sixties and seventies. We meet the maverick personalities who have defied the classical past, and we follow the rise of mass culture and mass politics on this sweeping tour of twentieth century history through its music.

Where are the babies? Steyn knows... 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Whether you like the author or not (I do), and whether you dislike his dry wit or not (I'm all about it), you're going to have a hard time disagreeing with his main point: much of what will be decided in the world in terms of Islam has already been decided by birth rate. Many countries aren't producing enough babies to replace themselves, and they need immigrants in order to pay for their lavish social programs. Those immigrants, especially in Europe, are (a) most often Muslim, and (b) often very uninterested in doing anything other than recreating their respective countries in their god's image.

That being said, Steyn is able to tell this story with ample statistical and parenthetical examples of his claims along with the ability to predict the future by simply observing the present. It's a thought-provoking read, and it's certainly one worth considering.

Editorial Review:

It's the end of the world as we know it. Someday soon, you might wake up to the call to prayer of a muezzin. Europeans already do. Liberals tell us that diversity is our strength while Talibanic enforcers cruise Greenwich Village burning books and barber shops, while the Supreme Court decides that sharia law doesn t violate the "separation of church and state," and the Hollywood Left decides to give up on gay rights in favor of the much safer charms of polygamy. If you think this can't happen, you haven't been paying attention, as the hilarious and provocative columnist Mark Steyn shows to devastating effect in this, his first book on American and global politics.

This Only LOOKS Like A Book About the Economy 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 9 people found this review helpful.

One would expect that a book subtitled "Reckless Finance, Failed Politics, and the Global Crisis of American Capitalism" would answer two basic questions: (1) What is wrong with the economy, and (2) How did it get that way? As a bonus, we might also like to know just who is responsible for the incipient Great Depression II, so that we can begin erecting gallows and fashioning enough nooses, and we might like to entertain suggestions as to how the crisis might be solved, but it turns out that Dr. Phillips knows no more about economics than do you or I or your local greengrocer. As a result, the book meanders in a desultory manner around various topics that are at best only tangentially related to our financial woes, and most are irrelevant.

In place of specifics about the economy, Kevin Phillips rambles about under the pretense of giving us the "Big Picture" or a "Historical Perspective," and thus we are treated to an entire chapter (chapter 6) on not merely what happened during the first Great Depression, but a complete overview of European history, as well. "In 1618, the fall of a weak Spanish first minister led to a burst of activism, and several years later . . ." And blah, blah, blah, followed by an analysis of the situation in Holland in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It's all absolutely fascinating (NOT!), but the trouble with this is that, if one digs hard enough, one can discover any lesson from history that one's looking for, and when does Phillips get to the economic situation of 2008? He doesn't. If the fact that in the fifth century the capitals of both Rome and Spain were moved to different cities (pg.157) is pertinent to our present situation, then what, if anything, can be considered irrelevant? Rin Tin Tin? Cameron Diaz? Jujubees?

Throughout "Bad Money" Kevin Phillips refers again and again to his previous books (he wants you to buy them), and since he has little information to share with us about the present economic crisis, he begins writing those old books all over again. We get many pages of his American Dynasty, including the scintillating revelation that "John Quincy Adams was elected president in 1824, . . . twenty-four years after his father, John Adams . . ." and that "Benjamin Harrison was elected president in 1888, forty-eight years after his grandfather, William Henry Harrison . . ." (This in a book about the economy.) Phillips has a Mencken-like animosity toward the Christian Right that he vented in his American Theocracy, so he here he spends a chapter placing the blame of our financial situation at the feet of the devout.

Because it's easier to write about than specifics of the financial system, an entire chapter is devoted to the debate on whether the world has reached Peak Oil production or not, but now (November, 2008) that the price of oil has fallen below $50-per-barrel, all that has been rendered moot for the time being.

I would fain admit that on random occasions, the stream-of-consciousness Philips writes in stumbles briefly into economic matters, but much of this is material that you have already read in the same papers and magazines that Kevin Phillips reads. There are many graphs and charts from The Financial Times and many quotes from that British journal. Unfortunately, Phillips adds little to the quotes, and he doesn't clarify the more abstruse terms. This book desperately needs a glossary, and before you read it (not that I'd recommend that you do) you should first become familiar with such terms as brouses, derivatives, credit default swaps, mercantilism, deleveraging, fixed-leg features and two-step binomial trees. (If you don't know what those are, don't feel bad, neither does Kevin Phillips.)

There is some new and startling information in "Bad Money," but much of it is of a dubious nature and is merely mentioned in passing. Our nation's conservative masses have followed the lead of their mob masters (turn-on any radio) and are blaming "minorities" (you know who) for the financial crisis, because these high-melanin types purchased homes they couldn't afford. But what about the "Ninja loans" that Phillips mentions? These were loans eagerly given to people with no job, no income, no assets. Are the brown people to blame for those, too? Unfortunately, Phillips cites such loans only in passing. Which lenders made them? How many such loans were made? Sorry, no further information is available. Likewise, Phillips mentions bonds that were backed by delinquent credit-card accounts. Phillips informs us that these bonds were given a rating of AAA, but that's all he knows.

Phillips provides a stunning revelation when he quotes several sources about a shadowy Plunge Protection Team within the Federal Reserve that may (or may not) have been manipulating the market by secretly buying and selling stocks and futures. On the other hand (pg.60), "There's never been any official confirmation of this." That's quite a serious charge --the Federal Reserve, a government within the government, buying and selling stocks to influence the market-- and I for one would like to learn more about it. Is it happening or not?

Alas, Phillips admits, "I have no personal firsthand knowledge and am not interested in becoming a conspiracy investigator." In other words, he doesn't know. It seems that there is much that Kevin Phillips doesn't know about the economy. Read this book and you, too, will know just as little.

History; It's What's for Dinner 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Dr. Diamond's magnum opus for which he has won an Oscar. Or maybe it was the Pullet Surprise. Something like that.

Unrivaled, in the experience of this humble reviewer, in either clarity or insight, GGS, is one of the best books I have ever read. Diamond is a gifted writer and is able to present complex issues simply and clearly. He also presents several interesting hypotheses regarding the evolution of civilization about how the humans had uncomfortably little to do with anything. We are the products of the plants and animals we domesticated. So go read the book before I domesticate you...

Editorial Review:

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize

In this groundbreaking work, evolutionary biologist Jared Diamond stunningly dismantles racially based theories of human history by revealing the environmental factors actually responsible for history’s broadest patterns. It is a story that spans 13,000 years of human history, beginning when Stone Age hunter-gatherers constituted the entire human population. Guns, Germs, and Steel is a world history that really is a history of all the world’s peoples, a unified narrative of human life.
