Editorial Review:

The Registry hasn't gone away. It's more important than ever--and every bit as cryptic as before--in Windows 2000. Windows 2000 Registry for Dummies explains what the Registry is used for, how it works, and how you (a power user with an interest in optimizing the appearance and performance of your PC) can perform surgery on it. Throughout this book, the emphasis is on exploration and experimentation with the greatest possible degree of safety, so you're given full information on backing up the Registry before the authors show you how to start paring away at its branches and leaves.

You'll find lots of conceptual information, including a neat explanation of the Registry's logical structure and the files that hold it. But the best part of Weadock's work may be his little how-to items, such as the one that explains how to sort the items in the Start menu alphabetically and the one that automatically clears lists of recently used documents (and recently visited Web sites). Sometimes he opts for a Registry solution when a non-Registry approach exists (as in the case of getting My Computer to open in Explorer view), but that's not a problem. Overall, you'll be pleased with Weadock's approach to a Windows 2000 detail that wasn't really meant for human eyes. --David Wall

Topics covered: The purpose and operation of the Registry in Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 2000 Server, making Registry backups and restoring the Registry from them, using Registry editors (regedit.exe and regedt32.exe, especially), organizational structure, user profiles, handy tricks and customizations, and the Registry's networking effects.

Editorial Review:

A cookbook of hacks you can make to the Registries of the various Windows 2000 operating systems, Windows 2000 Registry Little Black Book will help Windows 2000 administrators make their machines behave the way they want. It'll also help them get a better understanding of how Windows 2000 works, and more than likely introduce them to capabilities of the operating system that aren't well publicized in standard documentation.

Like all books in the Black Book series, the chapters in Windows 2000 Registry Little Black Book (each of which has to do with a functional area, like TCP/IP networking or the graphical user interface) are divided into "In Brief" and "Immediate Solutions" sections. "In Brief" is meant to explain the concepts that underlie the recipes and procedures that appear in the "Immediate Solutions" section, but for this subject the section seems to have been included as a formality--it's miniscule in most chapters and serves only to introduce some terms (terms you should be familiar with if you're considering hacking the Registry). "Immediate Solutions" sections are good, though wordy: every last Registry change is documented with a procedure that begins, "Launch Regedt32." This book could be a third of its present size if this padding were cut. --David Wall

Topics covered: How to change the values of Windows 2000 Registry keys to bring about particular behaviors, such as changing authentication timeouts and changing the way Windows reacts to a service's failure to start; Registry hacks for networking; the graphical user interface; multimedia; hardware; and Internet Information Server (IIS).

several inconsistancies 2 out of 5 stars.

I too, like a previous reviewer, noticed several errors in the self testing section of this book. Luckily I knew the correct answers and could spot them.

Not Worth the Money 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

The layout of the book may be appealing, and the graphics & charts too, but the contents are the reason I bought this book. I found many inconsistancies in the review question section where the answer key completely contradicts the text of the book. I also came across similar mistakes on the diskette. I am disappointed in the WB Saunders Company that they can publish a book of such importance which is unreliable and therefore useless.

Editorial Review:

Windows 98 can't bang two rocks together without consulting the Registry, and Windows 98 Registry Handbook documents the Registry very well. If you suspect there's a way to accomplish something in Windows 98, take a look at this book. In addition to providing information about the Registry itself, the book features lengthy discussions about software tools for working with the Registry, especially by using Norton Registry Editor, TweakUI, and the standard Microsoft editor.

Author Jerry Honeycutt carefully documents the contents of the Registry. He explains what each of the Registry's six hives contains, digging down through the subsidiary branches to provide lists of hundreds of entries. His commentary is sharp too--he explains what many of the entries mean and details how to modify them to achieve various results.

Windows 98 Registry Handbook also provides a collection of Registry recipes. Honeycutt reveals how to modify the order in which the contents of the Start menu appear. He tells how to disable the Run and Find commands in the Start menu too--a real attraction for corporate administrators. Honeycutt also reveals how you can make Windows 98 automatically flush its list of recently-used documents each time it starts up. He even shows enterprising users how to get around the roadblocks that crop up when a system administrator has tried to make it difficult to edit the Registry. The list goes on. --David Wall
