Editorial Review:

A cookbook of the hottest new algorithms and cutting-edge techniques in image processing and computer vision

This amazing book/CD package puts the power of all the hottest new image processing techniques and algorithms in your hands. Based on J. R. Parker's exhaustive survey of Internet newsgroups worldwide, Algorithms for Image Processing and Computer Vision answers the most frequently asked questions with practical solutions.

Parker uses dozens of real-life examples taken from fields such as robotics, space exploration, forensic analysis, cartography, and medical diagnostics, to clearly describe the latest techniques for morphing, advanced edge detection, wavelets, texture classification, image restoration, symbol recognition, and genetic algorithms, to name just a few. And, best of all, he implements each method covered in C and provides all the source code on the CD.

For the first time, you're rescued from the hours of mind-numbing mathematical calculations it would ordinarily take to program these state-of-the-art image processing capabilities into software. At last, nonmathematicians get all the shortcuts they need for sophisticated image recognition and processing applications.

On the CD-ROM you'll find:
* Complete code for examples in the book
* A gallery of images illustrating the results of advanced techniques
* A free GNU compiler that lets you run source code on any platform
* A system for restoring damaged or blurred images
* A genetic algorithms package

Editorial Review:

This is the newly revised and expanded edition of the popular introduction to the design and implementation of geometry algorithms arising in areas such as computer graphics, robotics, and engineering design. The second edition contains material on several new topics, such as randomized algorithms for polygon triangulation, planar point location, 3D convex hull construction, intersection algorithms for ray-segment and ray-triangle, and point-in-polyhedron. A new "Sources" chapter points to supplemental literature for readers needing more information on any topic. A novel aspect is the inclusion of working C code for many of the algorithms, with discussion of practical implementation issues. The self-contained treatment presumes only an elementary knowledge of mathematics, but reaches topics on the frontier of current research, making it a useful reference for practitioners at all levels. The code in this new edition is significantly improved from the first edition, and four new routines are included. Java versions for this new edition are also available. All code is accessible from the book's Web site (http://cs.smith.edu/~orourke/) or by anonymous ftp.

Editorial Review:

In the 1990s, a new type of learning algorithm was developed, based on results from statistical learning theory: the Support Vector Machine (SVM). This gave rise to a new class of theoretically elegant learning machines that use a central concept of SVMs—-kernels--for a number of learning tasks. Kernel machines provide a modular framework that can be adapted to different tasks and domains by the choice of the kernel function and the base algorithm. They are replacing neural networks in a variety of fields, including engineering, information retrieval, and bioinformatics. Learning with Kernels provides an introduction to SVMs and related kernel methods. Although the book begins with the basics, it also includes the latest research. It provides all of the concepts necessary to enable a reader equipped with some basic mathematical knowledge to enter the world of machine learning using theoretically well-founded yet easy-to-use kernel algorithms and to understand and apply the powerful algorithms that have been developed over the last few years.

Editorial Review:

In classic "cookbook style," this book offers guided access for researchers and practitioners to techniques for the digital manipulation and analysis of images, ranging from the simplest steps to advanced functions. Drawing on their long experience as users and developers of image analysis algorithms and software, the authors present a description and implementation of the most suitable procedures in easy-to-use form. Each self-contained section treats a single operation, describing typical situations requiring that operation and discussing the algorithm and implementation. Sections start with a "before" and "after" pictorial example and a ready-reference listing typical applications, keywords, and related procedures. This new edition has additional sections on Gabor filtering and on threshholding by connectivity, plus an expanded program listing and suggested projects for classroom use. And now the accompanying CD-ROM contains C programs not only as source code for carrying out the book's procedures but also as executables with a graphical user interface for Windows and Linux.

I agree with another reviewer who said the book was unnecessarily long. Genetic Algorithms are a great programming tool, and there are some tips and tricks that can help your programs converge faster and more accurately, but this book had a lot of redundant information.

If you are interested in using GA for solution-finding, I doubt you'll find much useful in this book beyond the first chapter or so. Many of the examples later in the book were so specific that I couldn't see how they could be usefully generalized. Really optimizing a GA approach for a specific problem domain takes a fair amount of tuning, and this book won't help much with that.

I think time spent surfing siteseer or other publication sites would be better spent than reading this book.

Editorial Review:

This book brings together - in an informal and tutorial fashion - the computer techniques, mathematical tools, and research results that will enable both students and practitioners to apply genetic algorithms to problems in many fields. Major concepts are illustrated with running examples, and major algorithms are illustrated by Pascal computer programs. No prior knowledge of GAs or genetics is assumed, and only a minimum of computer programming and mathematics background is required. 0201157675B07092001

Editorial Review:

Introduction to Computing Systems: From bits And gates to C And beyond, now in its second edition, is designed to give students a better understanding of computing early in their college careers in order to give them a stronger foundation for later courses. The book is in two parts: (a) the underlying structure of a computer, and (b) programming in a high level language and programming methodology. . .

To understand the computer, the authors introduce the LC-3 and provide the LC-3 Simulator to give students hands-on access for testing what they learn. To develop their understanding of programming and programming methodology, they use the C programming language. The book takes a "motivated" bottom-up approach, where the students first get exposed to the big picture and then start at the bottom and build their knowledge bottom-up. Within each smaller unit, the same motivated bottom-up approach is followed. Every step of the way, students learn new things, building on what they already know. The authors feel that this approach encourages deeper understanding and downplays the need for memorizing. Students develop a greater breadth of understanding, since they see how the various parts of the computer fit together. . .

This book tries to cover as much about Rexx as possible in one book. It succeeds well considering the challenge.

PROS: Thorough coverage of the Rexx language. Lots of coding examples, good tutorial, very comprehensive reference material. Covers some special topics like interfaces, programming style, error-handling techniques, and portability issues. Includes a lot on Windows and Linux. I had fun with the section on how to program my handheld using Rexx -- yah!

CONS: Contains two-plus chapters on object Rexx, but some more advanced material would be helpful. Found some typos, but nothing important.

CONCLUSION: Just about every Rexx programmer would benefit from having a copy.

Editorial Review:

  • Originally developed for mainframes but highly portable across platforms-from servers to desktops to handhelds-Rexx is an easy yet powerful scripting language that's widely used for rapid application development.
  • Covers Rexx interpreters for specialized functions-object-oriented, mainframe, and handheld.
  • There are 8 different free Rexx interpreters optimized for different platforms and uses. This book shows how to use them all.
  • Shows how to script for GUIs, databases, web servers, XML, and other interfaces.
  • Details how to make the best use of Rexx tools and interfaces, with examples for both Linux and Windows.
  • Includes a tutorial with lots of examples to help people get up and running.
