Very disappointing Object-Oriented book 2 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I thought this book would give revolutionary ideas on how to use object-oriented techniques to help my day-to-day programming life, but I was badly mistaken. There is only a few chapters on actual object-oriented programming but it does not use real world examples. The rest of the book is a badly written explanation of Delphi, which there are several other books which explain it much better.

Editorial Review:

The complete guide to creating large mission-critical applications with Delphi. The authors, all experienced developers, cover the object-oriented concepts underlying Delphi, present examples including a comprehensive case study, and show how Delphi can be used with other technologies, such as OLE 1.0/2.0, DDE, Windows DLLS, and database-related tools.

Editorial Review:

Suitable for the novice programmer, "Discover Pascal in Delphi "provides a complete and user-friendly introduction to programming in Pascal with the accessible prize-winning programming environment - Delphi. Written to complement the author sprevious book, "Discover Delphi", it puts more emphasis on the Pascal language, whilst keeping the enjoyment and fun of programming in the Delphi environment to the fore. With the aim of teaching the student how to write good, readable code, the authors cover all of the programming fundamentals, before moving on to show how to develop database applications using Delphi components, and other more advanced topics. Comprehensive appendices show how to use Delphi to produce professional Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs), and also summarise the main Pascal constructs for easy reference. Based on successful courses given by the authors, "Discover Pascal in Delphi "is an ideal text for novice programmers, and particularly suiting scientists and engineers who wish to learn programming skills in a sympathetic environment.

Editorial Review:

This volume contains the proceedings of the fifth International Workshop on Distributed Algorithms (WDAG '91) held in Delphi, Greece, in October 1991. The workshop provided a forum for researchers and others interested in distributed algorithms, communication networks, and decentralized systems. The aim was to present recent research results, explore directions for future research, and identify common fundamental techniques that serve as building blocks in many distributed algorithms. The volume contains 23 papers selected by the Program Committee from about fifty extended abstracts on the basis of perceived originality and quality and on thematic appropriateness and topical balance. The workshop was organizedby the Computer Technology Institute of Patras University, Greece.

Disappointed with Translation and Content 1 out of 5 stars.
27 of 27 people found this review helpful.

This book suffers from being poorly translationed and for lack of usable content. It was obviously not well edited--notice under Trademarks that the paragraph end with an incomplete sentence "as affecting the validity of" . More seriously, things soon get worse in content, for the first chapter covers installation which should be a no-brainer with the installation screens which it reproduces. Chapter two, covers the Delphi 5 environment, but is even less useful than Delphi's online help. Delphi provides a tutorial that better explains the development environment. Chapter 11, "Working with Database" is slightly more focused, but come on guys, who is this book going to help?

Never should have made it to the printer 1 out of 5 stars.
27 of 27 people found this review helpful.

This is a waste of ink. The language and editing are attrocious -- and I mean attrocious! This is nothing more than a collection of screen prints which do nothing to illustrate concepts. There is nothing here to help either a novice or an experienced programmer. The amazing grammar will have you putting the book down before you get through a few pages. Close your eyes and pick any other Delphi book.

Not recommended 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

If you're looking for an advanced book on Delphi look elsewhere. The book is long on words and short on value. You have to trawl for information - the last third of the book is almost entirely taken up with the story of "Ace Breakpoint" detective, which I didn't even find entertaining let alone enlightening. A large amount of the book's text is printed source code (unnecessary when you have it on CD; it just serves as filler). And while every chapter is on a different topic, many are, while Windows related, hardly Delphi specific ("3D Fractal Landscapes", "Drag and Drop the Windows Way" (ie. not the Delphi way) etc.). All this would have been forgiven if the titbits in this book were worthwhile Delphi tips. But although various developers have looked at it, nobody in our office has yet obtained anything useful out of this book. It just sits on a bookshelf now, gathering dust.

Editorial Review:

You've learned to program with Delphi 3, and now you're ready to move to another level. If you want to get serious about Delphi programming, this book was written just for you. Open it up and shift into second gear, where you'll explore input/output filtering, fractals, way-out-there database technology, and Windows arcana. Then pop it into high gear and slam the pedal to the metal, as you speed through Internet development secrets, dynamic user interface design, process monitoring, embedded components, and more. Powerful stuff, written by experts for those who wish to become experts - and all written with a light heart and more than a touch of wit (you'll even be learning techniques through the programming adventures of Ace Breakpoint, Non-Traditional Programmer).
