Editorial Review:

Learn Object Pascal with Delphi provides an introduction to the popular programming language that is used as the basis for many computer science programs and a wide range of professional software development projects. The book is organized around specific programming skills, such as defining constants, creating variables, declaring types, making decisions, looping, encapsulating routines into procedures, using arrays and records, and handling files. Among the elements that make this book perfect for beginning Delphi developers are Quick Check review questions to reinforce new concepts; Test Your Knowledge exercises for trying out newfound skills; and an appendix listing Object Pascal's reserved words. The companion CD-ROM puts you to work immediately with the complete Delphi 5.0 Standard Edition compiler ready for installation. The CD also contains the complete source code for all of the examples; trial versions of Glad components; and a trial version of the UIL Security System from Unlimited Intelligence Limited.

Editorial Review:

This authoritative and comprehensive title covers the basics of Delphi programming in depth, while demonstrating why Delphi 4 is even more powerful than its predecessors. The text begins with a tour of Delphi 4 basics, including improvements since version 1. After observing object-oriented Pascal programming, including advanced language features, the authors turn to the strengths of using the Visual Component Library (VCL) application frameworks. They include several invaluable sections for corporate developers, including a "coding standards" document. Sections on combining VCL with ActiveX controls round out the basic tour.

Advanced topics include graphics programming, building dynamic link-libraries (DLLs), printing, and multithreading. A rich tour of VCL components, including instructions on how to create custom components, and ActiveX internals follows.

The rest of the book examines strategies for creating applications, from traditional two-tiered, client/server database applications to applications that use the Internet to deliver HTML on the fly using server-side Delphi objects. Finally, the authors look at n-tiered applications that make use of Delphi's powerful MIDAS architecture for distributed computing. --Richard Dragan

Good information, poorly presented 2 out of 5 stars.
15 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Not having used C++Builder for several years, I was looking forward to reading this one to learn the new bits of v6, and pick up some pointers on BDE while getting there. The book was very frustrating to me. There are some people who can explain topics in an easy-to-follow fashion. The author of this book excels at making topics as complex as possible, using multisyllabic words whenever possible, and just generally trying to appear erudite. Opening the book at random, I came across this sample: "A web application module is typically a TWebAppPageModule object or a TWebAppDataModule object. The TWebAppPageModule component should be used if our application is to generate at least one web page; in other words, our application is of page module type. (p307)" I'm not planning on throwing it away, but it's not a book to keep by the computer. For many topics, I can get more useful information from Borland's on-line help.

This book feels like a surface skim of BCB6, with the occasional deep dive with extremely specific examples. I should have figured that at a bit over a third the size of C++Builder 5: A Developers Guide, quite a bit would be missing, particularly with all the cool new components in BCB6. For example, under "Developing custom components", the author states that this is a topic that could occupy an entire book. He then gives two pages of notes and code fragments that did not help me at all. CB5:ADG above, on the other hand, has an entire chapter, 74 pages, and actually provides the information needed for the task. Why bother including this topic if the information is useless?

I also have to admit, I found the fact that the author had to come here and respond to critics with five stars not only amusing, but worth taking one star away from my own review (which otherwise would have been three stars). This is by no means a five star book.

Editorial Review:

C++Builder 6 Developer's Guide is targeted at intermediate to advanced developers who wish to develop their applications with one of the most powerful C++ implementations on the Windows platform. C++Builder 6 is a revolutionary edition of the product compared to previous versions.

If you are building your experts in Delphi 3 or 4 this book is a must-have. Using Delphi 5 and later, you have to consider that Borland made some rather big changes to the OTA interfaces.

25 pages about Web Sercices 1 out of 5 stars.
20 of 24 people found this review helpful.

This book, maybe a good Delphi book but out of the 695 pages only 25 has to do with Web Services which is a major part of the title. The book should be call "Delphi does Web stuff". On the other hand then it would not sell would it?
Printed on the cover: "For a Solid Understanding of How to Use Delphi for Creating Web Services" - You can find more up to date information by a using on google.

Editorial Review:

Intended for professional developers working in Delphi who are looking for a way to move into the sphere of new programming technology for e-business, this guide discusses specific Delphi tools and technologies and enables developers to take advantage of the RAD technique with the new version of Delphi for creating Web services. Emphasis is given to the development of data processing using the XML and SOAP protocol and to the creation of Web services based on its capabilities. Also covered are all aspects of working with databases-data presentation; local, client-server, and distributed systems; and technologies of accessing data, from BDE to dbExpress and dbGO.

Editorial Review:

With such an acclaimed list of contributors that include Bob Swart (aka Dr. Bob) and Ray Konopka, it’s little wonder that Delphi 6 Developer’s Guide oozes knowledge and insight from cover to cover. Make no mistake, this is not one for the faint-hearted. If you are just starting out along the development road, then you may well do better to pass this volume by for now. However, if you are looking to step up your skills to get to grips with the advanced end of Delphi, then this book will take you a long way to where you want to be.

Ably demonstrating their vast wealth of experience, the authors help you to discover a treasure chest of skills and techniques that make the very best use of Delphi 6. Although some information is repeated from previous editions in the series, preference is given to providing in-depth coverage of the many new features, including developing CLX components, interfacing with COM+, and creating e-business solutions by writing SOAP-based Web Services. However, don’t worry too much about what has been left out of this edition as the entire text of Delphi 5 Developer’s Guide is included on the CD-ROM.

Developed and enhanced as it has been over the years, this latest edition to the Delphi Developer’s Guide series is the best yet. If you would prefer a gentler learning curve into the upper echelons as a Delphi developer, then Marco Cantu’s superb Mastering Delphi 6 may be preferred, but if you’re confident you can stay the distance, then you will not do better than this complete and authoritative guide. --Peter Lunn, amazon.co.uk

You have to start somewhere... 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I too thought there would be a little 3D in this book, but I can understand why there isn't. 3D Game programming is absurdly complex. You need to get the basic concepts and feel of game programming down in 2D (well, it's a good idea anyway).

Many complain about not finding the CD Key... it's on a card that sticks out like a sore thumb in the back of the book. Look a little harder.

This book is not a comprehensive guide to game or direct x programming (or Delphi). However, what it can do is provide you with the means to jump right in and make a game. What I'm talking about is ready-made basic 2D game engine's that can be modified to do just about anything. The book gets you the basics on graphics, sound, sprites, controls (even force feedback), special effects and a bit more.

I was introduced to this book by taking a graphics class in my 4th year of college. We barely used the book (because we only touched a little direct x at the end), but I spent the end of that winter break and much of the following months making a Tetris style puzzle game. If you can get the example programs to compile/run, you should be able to modify them to do your bidding.

Editorial Review:

A concise, detailed tutorial and reference describing high performance graphics and game programming techniques in the Delphi development environment.

Best Shell API Resource, AND EXEMPLARY DELIVERY OF MATERIAL 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Imposing as the material in this book might otherwise be, I am most impressed with the clean authorship of the material. This book is more than a developer can reasonably hope for in a source reference. I expected to have to give maybe 10 days' time to absorbing it cover to cover, but it is written so well that most chapters require reading less than a page describing the chapter; and the rest of the material can simply be used. So full of treasure is this book that I spent hours the first evening just typing code into projects. All of it ran right the first time. I doubt a better book can be written on this subject, and will from here on consider any book with John Ayres' name on it the one to look at first on whatever the topic. A huge thanks to you John for doing your work so well. You made ours' far easier than we imagined.

Editorial Review:

This new titles is an updated edition of Tomes of Delphi: Win32 Graphical API, which received rave reviews from the industry. The new edition retains its reference organization and distinctive help file on the CD, as well as including Windows 2000 changes.
