Ivor Horton's Beginning Visual C++ 2008

Proudly presenting the latest edition of one of the all-time bestselling books on the C++ language, successful author Ivor Horton repeats the formula that has made each previous edition so popular by teaching you both the standard C++ language and C++/CLI as well as Visual C++ 2008. Thoroughly updated for the 2008 release, this book shows you how to build real-world applications using Visual C++ and guides you through the ins and outs of C++ development.

Horton's accessible approach and detailed examples cover both flavors of the C++ language-native ISO/ANSIC++ Windows application development using the Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC), as well as the development of C++/CLI Windows applications using Windows Forms. He also introduces you to the techniques you can use for accessing data sources in both MFC and Windows Forms, and working examples demonstrate each programming technique that is being discussed. With this book by your side, you are well on your way to becoming a successful C++ programmer.

What you will learn from this book

  • How to use the Standard Template Library, a powerful and extensive set of tools for organizing and manipulating data in your native C++ programs
  • Techniques for finding errors in your C++ programs
  • The ways that Microsoft(r) Windows(r) applications are structured and the elements that are essential for each application
  • How to create and use common controls in order to build the graphical user interface for your application

Why that title? 1 out of 5 stars.

This is not a Visual C++ book. It is the first time I'm disapointed about a book from Deitel& Deitel. I was looking for a Visual C++ book, and there is not even a chapter about MFC. I bought many years ago "C++ How to Program" from Deitel & Deitel, and this new book is just a new Edition of the "C++ How To Program"

I highly recommend "Java How To Program" and "C++ How to Program", but if you are looking for something in Visual C++, don't buy "Visual C++ 2008 How to Program" or you will end up returning it.

Editorial Review:

The Deitels' groundbreaking How to Program series offers unparalleled breadth and depth of programming concepts for programmers of all levels. The books in this series feature hundreds of complete, working programs with thousands of lines of code. KEY TOPICS: Focuses on native C++ and presents examples of .NET managed code programming with C++/CLI, where appropriate. Takes an easy-to-follow, carefully developed early classes and objects approach provides comprehensive coverage of object-oriented programming. Teaches the fundamentals of software engineering and object-oriented design with the UML 2.0 using an optional automated teller machine (ATM) case study, with additional integrated case studies throughout the text. For anyone interested in learning how to program Visual C++.

I own many programming books and I code in many languages. I need a book that cuts through the idle chatter and lets me get to work. Ivor Horton's book is well organized and follows a format of: topic, example, explanation. The examples are good real-world examples and the explanations are easy to follow.

Not the best, but not too shabby 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

MFC programming is a bear, especially in VC++ 6.0 (not .NET). This book does a decent job of introducing key concepts, and comes with a mountain of sample code on CD. If MFC/VC++ were my first programming language, I would look for a book geared more towards total complete novices; otherwise, it does the trick.

Excellent Intro Book!!! Best Programming book ever read 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the best programming book that I read from page 1 to the last page. I hope Jones can write more books on MFC or Visual C#. Not only did I learn MFC concepts and programming skills, but also I found Chapter 1 and 2 are very useful because they are basic and fundamental to C++ that I sometimes forgot. I love the pace and layout of this book. User-defined messaging and modeless are explained in a very nice way. The Appendice are very useful too.

I give this book a full 5 stars.

good seller, definitely recommend 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

Programming Microsoft Visual C++ reveals the structures and systems that make Windows programs work. If you know C well and are at all familiar with C++, this latest version of a classic text is an excellent springboard into programming for Microsoft Windows.

This book is sure to reveal new information to those with Windows programming experience--most of which has to do with the new tools available to Windows programmers. The authors explain COM and Active Template Library (ATL). In learning about those things, you absorb information about ActiveX technologies, database programming, and Microsoft's Internet facilities. Additionally, this guide is still the best around for those who want to put well-behaved windows on the screen, fill them with controls, and have them perform useful functions. Illumination of the Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC) has traditionally been this book's strong point, and the coverage of MFC 6 in this edition upholds the tradition.

Throughout, illustrative code translates well to real-world projects (particularly since it all appears on a companion CD-ROM). Each example tackles a particular task, such as how to use a persistent frame window class or how to refer to the contents of Dynamic Link Libraries (DLLs). --David Wall

Editorial Review:

For the majority of C++ programmers, the pace and style of David Chapman's Teach Yourself Visual C++ 6 in 21 Days will make a good deal of sense. The author covers all the essentials of basic Windows and Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC) development, and then addresses several new features in Visual C++ 6, all while moving quickly enough for the busy, working programmer.

Chapman's first section introduces the basic Visual C++ 6 tools, like the AppWizard and ClassWizard, and discusses the essentials of building dialog-based applications using basic Windows controls such as static text, edit, button, and list box controls. Further chapters cover mouse and keyboard basics, timers, menus, and fonts. In short, the first week provides a traditional introduction to Windows and MFC programming without the frills.

The second set of tutorials delves into Graphical Device Interface (GDI) graphics programming, always a challenging topic for new MFC programmers. Then the author moves to using ActiveX controls inside your applications (a real strength of Visual C++, enhanced in the new release). The basics of toolbars, saving and restoring files to MFC applications, and an introduction to Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) programming round out this set of chapters.

The last set of exercises will give the MFC developer some new expertise. First, the author looks at the potential of ActiveX Data Objects (ADOs) for database development and how to build reusable libraries in both static and dynamic targets. Advanced material introduces the basics of networking and the TCP/IP protocol and discusses MFC support for working with the Web.

For readers with a little more time, handy appendices discuss additional topics such as printing, the MFC container and helper classes, and the basics of exception handling and debugging. Clearly, the constraints of the 21-day format have not prevented this author from successfully covering many essential topics in today's MFC programming with a good level of detail. --Richard Dragan

Not much to it...... 2 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I agree with a previous reviewer who said that the authors didn't pay much attention to who the target audience was for this book.
It starts off like a C++ book, then you have some .NET stuff thrown in (ofcourse, you are not told why you need them, its like "This is a .NET book, and there has to be some .NET material!!"). I have been programming in C++ for quite long, and I thought I could progress to .NET with this one. I was wrong. The book doesnt even take time off to explain what "Managed" C++ is all about. There are some nuggets of info here and there, but its so disorganised, I dont think they will benefit anyone.

Good book for intermediate C++ & new to .NET 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Step by Step is a good description of what this book is about. While it would be very helpful to have some prior C++ experience, you could probably just have a copy of .NET and this book, and get alot out of it. However, if you are experienced in Visual C++.NET, this book would be of little use. It would be impossible to comprehensively cover all of the topics addressed in this book in it's < 600 pages, but it gives, in my opinion, and great introduction to some of C++.NET's features. I found the section on ADO.NET especially helpful, and was able to write some fine database mgt. software for my personal use. This book also gives a solid introduction to Windows Forms programming as well as to exception handling in .NET. I think some of the longer reviews for this book are over done. It would be very easy for a knowlegdeable .NET developer to sharpshoot was is wrong with it. I am glad I didn't listen to them before I bought this book. It was worth every penny.

Editorial Review:

Getting the most out of your Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC) applications is the goal of Eugène Kain's The MFC Answer Book. Though it does not cover newer Internet Explorer-style enhancements, this title offers some indispensable tips for writing more attractive MFC applications in Visual C++.

The book begins with an excellent tour of the MFC document/view architecture. As the author notes, Visual C++ wizards let you generate simple, functional multiple-document interface (MDI) applications, but you're on your own after that. To remedy this gap, the author shares his expertise for building better MDI applications. He includes how to manage more than one view, as well as how to save and reload files effectively.

The same question-and-answer approach is used for such topics as views, dialog boxes, and property sheets. Standout tips here include how to size and control views, as well as how to change the color and font used for dialog controls. The author also shows you how to create applications that run in full-screen mode, just like in Microsoft Word 97. Toolbars, menus, and printing functions round out the tour.

Throughout this text, Kain provides plenty of short, clear programming examples that show exactly how to solve some of the most perplexing and common problems faced by the working MFC programmer. There's little doubt that The MFC Answer Book can save you hours of experimenting on your own; it can help you create significantly more responsive and appealing MFC programs. --Richard Dragan

Lots of Examples, not step by step 2 out of 5 stars.
34 of 37 people found this review helpful.

I have been writing C/C++ programs for a long time, and I bought this book looking to go from console programs to graphical interfaces. I would not recommend this book for someone in this position. It has basic descriptions of various MFC classes and what they do, but not exactly how to use them. There is a gap between explaining the classes, and the examples, as the examples are complete programs that uses many classes put together.

For example, dialog boxes and control classes are described in Chapter 2, but the first example PROGRAM is in Chapter 5, after drawing, messaging, etc. I would have liked the book to say "Here is this drawing function, and this is how you intialize all of the MFC stuff to be able to use it." In fact, the book is more like "here is a list of drawing functions, some are used in Example X on page Z."

I suspect this book would be useful for a somewhat experienced MFC programmer but I wouldn't buy it as your first foray into MFC.

Great book for MFC programmers w/limited DB knowledge 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book if you have MFC programming experience but very little database knowledge. It's as if the book was written for me. It's easy to read and it's a great introduction to database programming. You'll learn about SQL, ODBC, OLE DB, ADO, etc. I'll admit that I used to get mind-boggled by this "acronymic hell", but this book gives a great overview and everything finally makes sense. It helps if you have some understanding of COM (ie: what it is and what it's for), but it's not required as it's covered in later chapters. The author presents pros and cons of many different database technologies and provides clear programming examples. Obviously the other reviewers that complained about the examples didn't bother *reading* the book. Some of the examples require that you modify the code depending on where you've installed the sample files. However, these guys probably thought they could learn everything about database programming by cutting and pasting the example code into their programs. I would think that if you're going to buy a book, you should seriously consider reading what's inside...especially if you intend to add "database programmer" to your resume. Duh!
