Great resource for beginning/intermediate Cobol programmers 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book is a great resource for the beginning or intermediate Cobol programmer. Very clear explanations and abundant examples aid understanding. The authors favor a "hands on" approach which encourages the reader to try out the concepts in each chapter. The example code is included on the CD (along with the input files for the exercises) which is a great timesaver.

The authors are careful about pointing out differences between Cobol-85 and Cobol-74 as they arise. While this may seem to be a minor point with the advent of the latest Cobol standard, it is helpful to those who work with older systems that are not fully Cobol-85 compliant.

The Fujitsu Cobol environment comes along with the book. The Fujitsu compiler is a big improvement over the DOS-based compiler and editor that came with the second edition. An appendix provides some step-by-step examples to help the reader get up to speed with the compiler.

The book is weighted more towards micro computers - if you are working in a mainframe environment, you will probably want to find additional references on JCL, CICS, etc.

The book may not be the best choice for someone who has no previous programming experience, but for readers who have some background in programming (in any language) and are interested in learning Cobol, this book & compiler set is the best resource I've seen for Cobol at this level. I strongly recommend it.

Editorial Review:

Text covers all basic COBOL elements. Version 4.0 of the Fujitsu compiler, editor, and project manager. New third edition. Softcover. CD-ROM included. DLC: COBOL (Computer program language)

Very good detail... 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is very good for someone who needs examples and explanations of sample code. I found this book very easy to read. I will use this book as a supplement in my class. It provides a different way of explaining material that would sometimes be confusing. I like that this book breaks down every line of code and explains it to the novice programmer.

Editorial Review:

For courses in Java/Visual J++, and Java - Introduction to Programming. This special edition of Java How to Program is ideal for one- semester, introductory Java courses and is up-to-date with the Java 2 Platform Standard Edition 5.0. The text covers fundamental programming topics and provides several extra chapters so professors can customize courses to meet their needs. Many of the chapters have been trimmed from Java How to Program, Sixth Edition so they include only information likely to be presented in a one- semester, introductory course. Coverage of graphical user interfaces, applets and graphics is designed to be optional in Small Java How to Program.

COBOL programmers need this book 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Harvey Bookman has written the best and maybe the only book for COBOL programmers who want to convert older programs to COBOL/370. I have read and used this book many times but am unable to purchase it anywhere. This book explains how to convert CICS and IMS calls in an understandable mannor. It explains the compiler in detail. It explains the new date routine which is most exceptional. It explains dump reading and new debugging tools most effectively. This book is a must have for COBOL programmers who want to convert older programs to COBOL/370LE.

A must for any COBOL programmer. 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

COBOL is a mature programming language and this is one of the best books and a superb textbook. Structured Cobol Programming by Gary B. Shelly, Thomas J. Cashman and Roy O. Foreman was my book of choice as a COBOL instructor. The chapters are well planned with steady progress with very good examples. Although new edition is required to cover COBOL Functions this book still remains at the top of my list. As an independent COBOL consultant I find this book a good reference.

MADNESS 1 out of 5 stars.

"This book was developed specifically for a first course in structured COBOL programming. After completing this book, students should have a firm foundation in the concepts and techniques of structured program design and. ...should be able to solve variety of business-related application problems using COBOL."
I have to use this book for my COBOL course. The book is the mess. The book is for the students who never had any contact with COBOL; well, I don't have that feeling. The authors maybe know COBOL but they are definitely not the people who should teach others how to program with COBOL. They mentioned flowcharting, but they never explained flowcharting properly. In Chapter 2 they start with a large program and they try to explain it. Problem is that after few pages I didn't know what is what. Their approach is not to start with simple short programs that give introduction into programming that should help the student to develop, to learn different parts of program, they start with the max program and it is up to you to understand it or to drop it. In Chapter 3, Excersize 3, they ask the student to design and code a COBOL program that displays....
HELLO!!! You never showed me how to design and code a program and in Chapter 3 you ask me to do something. How to start, where to start?! How to design, how to code?!
Unfortunately, I have to use this book, but I am afraid that I will hate this book and COBOL because of this book.

Editorial Review:

Part of the highly successful Shelly Cashman Series, this introductory book allows the user to write error free, reliable, and easy to modify COBOL programs right from the start.

One of the best written how-to computer books 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I, had to becomes a CICS expert in a couple of days. This book is unbelievably easy to follow. My complememts to Alida M. Jatich. I've learned almost all my computer skills through books. This one ranks up there with Stern and Stern's 'Structured COBOL' and McQuillen & Princes 'MVS Assembler Language

Editorial Review:

This text aims to teach the reader how to design, code and test CICS applications in both the mainframe and the OS/2 environments. It provides the tools and techniques in step-by-step format, as well as the concepts behind those techniques. It explains how CICS relates to the hardware, the operating system, the data and the applications. The book includes hands-on exercises and sample programs that readers can use as a basis for creating new applications. The author explains how terminal devices work, how they are connected to CICS, and how to use them in an application. The vital topics of VSAM and SQL are covered in depth, as are communications between program modules and between CICS regions and systems. New material includes CICS OS/2 and associated tools and techniques, CUA (Common User Access) and SQL, as well as the new mainframe releasers CICS/MUS 2.1.1 and CICS/ESA 3.1.

A very complete CICS reference 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This is an EXCELLENT CICS reference. It's really the only book you'll need if you have CICS projects at work. It has handy programming examples, a complete INDEX (novel concept, eh?), and detailed explanations.

One word review: Excellent.

I reach for this book first, when I can find it. 5 out of 5 stars.

Some one always has it. Thats why I am going to buy one of my own. (Me and 4 other guys!) The best feature is it's alphabetized. And nothing is better than a good example. The only way it could get better is to add a chapter on Linkage Section and its use in calling/linking to background CICS programs. (PS. Hi Rick, glad to see you got CIO at Amazon) Mark Lankford

This Book Has Everything I Need to Know About CICS 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Once you begin to modify CICS programs, you soon find out all about the little idiosyncrasies and problems inherent in anything as complex as online programming. The CICS Desk Reference contains practically all Command-Level CICS commands and error explanations, and shows many examples on using the commands. Although it deals with COBOL programming, Assembly programmers can find many answers here, too.

Editorial Review:

Shove all those IBM manuals off your desk! This one book contains everything you need at your side when you're doing CICS work. BMS macros...CICS commands...AMS commands...JCL setups...ISPF editing commands...model programs...program design techniques...testing and debugging. It's the one book you won't want to be without!(12 Sections, 507 pages)

An excellent introduction to embedded SQL for DB2 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

As a contract programmer, I can really appreciate a book that teaches new programming tools with a minimum of confusing, redundant, or unnecessary information. Steve Eckols' book "DB2 for the COBOL Programmer Part 1" certainly meets these standards.

If you are an experienced COBOL programmer with work experience using any DBMS, whether or not it is SQL based, this book will help you to become a productive DB2 programmer in a minimum amount of time.

Mr. Eckols has obviously put a great deal of thought into the book. It is organized in a straightforward manner. Most chapters end with a coding example that is kept simple to focus on the features introduced in that chapter.

In addition to the basics of SQL for DB2, this book also includes some of the possible problems and efficiency issues normally learned by trial and error.

I would highly recommend this book to all COBOL programmers who would like to learn DB2 (or SQL in general.)

Editorial Review:

Already know the basics of writing DB2 programs? There's still plenty to learn. Part 2 teaches you all the advanced features you're going to want to use as you continue working in DB2. From data manipulation to DB2 processing in CICS to dynamic SQL, this book boosts your DB2 skills...and serves as a quick reference when you're faced with new programming requirements.( 15 chapters, 393 pages, 164 illustrations)
