Editorial Review:

This book presents novel symbolic control and data flow techniques as well as symbolic techniques and algorithms for program analysis and program optimization. Program contexts, defining a new symbolic description of program semantics for control and data flow analysis, are at the center of the techniques and methods introduced.

The authors develop solutions for a number of problems encountered in program analysis by using program contexts. The solutions proposed are efficient, versatile, unified, and more general than most existing methods.

The authors' symbolic analysis framework is implemented as a prototype as part of the Vienna High Performance Compiler.

If you want to see how a compiler is written for the C programming
language, this is the book for you. this book shows how to construct a C compiler for a subset of the C language. The book lists all the source codes

Very usefull book, for programmers. 5 out of 5 stars.

This book,
explaines how to build a compiler,
from practical point of view,
It let us to watch how we should reach the goal,
instead of theortical expressions.

Practicly it helps to build your own compiler,
rebuil proposed to your own needs.
At least effectively use already existen compilers,
even in the case if you do not plan to build or rebuild any compiler.
Just look about all that bloved code,
done in last years.
I guess most of modern programmes code their
programs without picturing out how their programs
will be looking like in final machin code.

very good book for students who take compiler class 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

Advanced ASIC Chip Synthesis: Using Synopsys TM Design CompilerTM Physical CompilerTM and PrimeTime TM, Second Edition describes the advanced concepts and techniques used towards ASIC chip synthesis, physical synthesis, formal verification and static timing analysis, using the Synopsys suite of tools. In addition, the entire ASIC design flow methodology targeted for VDSM (Very-Deep-Sub-Micron) technologies is covered in detail.

The emphasis of this book is on real-time application of Synopsys tools, used to combat various problems seen at VDSM geometries. Readers will be exposed to an effective design methodology for handling complex, sub-micron ASIC designs. Significance is placed on HDL coding styles, synthesis and optimization, dynamic simulation, formal verification, DFT scan insertion, links to layout, physical synthesis, and static timing analysis. At each step, problems related to each phase of the design flow are identified, with solutions and work-around described in detail. In addition, crucial issues related to layout, which includes clock tree synthesis and back-end integration (links to layout) are also discussed at length. Furthermore, the book contains in-depth discussions on the basis of Synopsys technology libraries and HDL coding styles, targeted towards optimal synthesis solution. Target audiences for this book are practicing ASIC design engineers and masters level students undertaking advanced VLSI courses on ASIC chip design and DFT techniques.

Editorial Review:

This book provides a high-level description, together with a mathematical and an experimental analysis, of Java and of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), including a standard compiler of Java programs to JVM code and the security critical bytecode verifier component of the JVM. The description is structured into language layers and machine components. It comes with a natural executable refinement (written in AsmGofer and provided on CD ROM) which can be used for testing code. The method developed for this purpose is based on Abstract State Machines (ASMs) and can be applied to other virtual machines and to other programming languages as well. The book is written for advanced students and for professionals and practitioners in research and development who need a complete and transparent definition and an executable model of the language and of the virtual machine underlying its intended implementation.
The CD ROM contains the entire text of the book and numerous examples and exercises.

"The Jbook gives the most comprehensive and consistent formal account of the combination of Java and the JVM." (Pieter Hartel and Luc Moreau in Formalizing the Safety of Java, the Java Virtual Machine and Java Card, ACM Computing Surveys, 33(4):517-558, 2001. Section 6.2, page 540.)

College level computer science textbook 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

"Algorithms and Data Structures: The Science of Computing" is designed as a second course computer science textbook for colleges. At this level most computer sciences classes tend to focus on programming and programming theory. While it does have some programming examples (all in Java), this book takes a more overall view and deals with the basics of algorithms and data structures. Why is this an important difference? I have seen a lot of bloated code over the years where a programmer writes a hundred or more lines of code to do something that a couple of lines could do if they only had a better understanding of algorithms. This course gives you the conceptual knowledge you need to be able to adapt to other computer languages and coding techniques as they are developed.

The book does make some assumptions about the reader. First, it assumes the reader has had an introductory course in an object-oriented programming language. As indicated earlier, all examples are in Java, but you should be able to follow along if you have had a course in any object-oriented language. Second, the book also assumes a good (but not necessarily college level) background in mathematics.

This is a foundational course in the design of algorithms, and data structures and mathematical theory to predict and verify, as well as empirical analysis to test the results. "Algorithms and Data Structures: The Science of Computing" is a recommended book as a second course in a computer sciences degree as well as a foundational course for those who are trying to develop a broad basis of computer knowledge at home.

Editorial Review:

While many computer science textbooks are confined to teaching programming code and languages, Algorithms and Data Structures: The Science of Computing takes a step back to introduce and explore algorithms -- the content of the code. Focusing on three core topics: design (the architecture of algorithms), theory (mathematical modeling and analysis), and the scientific method (experimental confirmation of theoretical results), the book helps students see that computer science is about problem solving, not simply the memorization and recitation of languages. Unlike many other texts, the methods of inquiry are explained in an integrated manner so students can see explicitly how they interact. Recursion and object oriented programming are emphasized as the main control structure and abstraction mechanism, respectively, in algorithm design. Designed for the CS2 course, the book includes text exercises and has laboratory exercises at the supplemental Web site.

The good starting point, is embracing, neat and actual. 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book is a good starting point for anyone who needs to create a compiler, parser or scanner, but didn't read anything about compiler design theory yet. This book is completely self-contained and assumes only the familiarity with programming languages and the mathematical sophistication commonly found in juniors or seniors.

The material in this book has been taught for several years in one-semester first-year graduate courses at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., the State University of New York at Albany, and many other institutions. The bewildered looks of students in these institutions have motivated the authors to do several rewrites of the materials. That's why the book is pleasant to read and easy to understand.

The book contains a good introduction to state machines and all modern grammars, including, but not limited to, LALR(1).

Since the book doesn't cover code generation, but only lexical and syntax part, it is still actual since published 1976. For example, the most popular nowadays LALR(1) grammar, supported by Yacc and Bison, is a core of the GNU compiler and many other commercial compilers. But the book itself is tool-free, it explains the background that never expires, rather than bothering the reader with the tools which may exist today and vanish tomorrow. The example of such book with a mess of theory and tools is "Compilers: Principles, Techniques, and Tools" by by Alfred V. Aho.

The book "Compiler Design Theory" is embracing, neat and actual.
