Editorial Review:

Maintaining a balance between a theoretical and practical approach to this important subject, Elements of Compiler Design serves as an introduction to compiler writing for undergraduate students. From a theoretical viewpoint, it introduces rudimental models, such as automata and grammars, that underlie compilation and its essential phases. Based on these models, the author details the concepts, methods, and techniques employed in compiler design in a clear and easy-to-follow way. From a practical point of view, the book describes how compilation techniques are implemented. In fact, throughout the text, a case study illustrates the design of a new programming language and the construction of its compiler. While discussing various compilation techniques, the author demonstrates their implementation through this case study. In addition, the book presents many detailed examples and computer programs to emphasize the applications of the compiler algorithms. After studying this self-contained textbook, students should understand the compilation process, be able to write a simple real compiler, and easily follow advanced books on the subject.

Comprehensive and exceptionally well organized 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

David Young's Enhydra XMLC Application Development presents XMLC development by first outlining the advantages of XMLC and the Enhydra platform. Then Young introduces progressively more complex development scenarios using XMLC and illustrates each topic with working examples. Enhydra XMLC Application Development is comprehensive, exceptionally well organized, and an ideal instructional text and a useful, long term reference work. User Level: Intermediate-Advanced, 450 pages.

Good Reference 4 out of 5 stars.

If you are doing a J2EE or JSP project, XMLC is worthy of consideration as an alternative to JSP. It works with any Java app server. Unlike JSP, it perfectly cleanly separates the View of a Model/View/Controller architecture.

This book is written by the XMLC code author. It is well laid out. While, most of the information in the book can be found online, the book lays it out more succinctly and provides a desk reference.

If you are frustrated with the messiness of JSPs, if you are considering XMLC for a project, or if you are using XMLC for a project, this book is a must have.

Editorial Review:

Natural Semantics has become a popular tool among programming language researchers for specifying many aspects of programming languages. However, due to the lack of practical tools for implementation, the natural semantics formalism has so far largely been limited to theoretical applications. This book introduces the rational meta-language RML as a practical language for natural semantics specifications. The main part of the work is devoted to the problem of compiling natural semantics, actually RML, into highly efficient code. For this purpose, an effective compilation strategy for RML is developed and implemented in the rml2c compiler. This compiler ultimately produces low-level C code. Benchmarking results show that rml2c-produced code is much faster than code resulting from compilers based on alternative implementation approaches.

Great reference work on compiler design 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book deals firstly with the design and secondly with the construction of compilers for high-level programming languages. While the emphasis therefore is on the design aims of compiler projects and how they might be achieved, the practical details of compiler writing have not been overlooked and the background to much of the text is the compiler work which has taken place in the Computer Science Department in the University of Strathclyde over the last few years.

The book should be suitable as a basis for an undergraduate course on compilers and has been used as such in the University of Strathclyde. It deals with the implementation of block-structured languages such as ALGOL 60, PL/l, ALGOL 68, Pascal, or Ada and reference is made frequently to aspects of particular languages. Algorithms are described in an actual programming language (ALGOL 68) but students not familiar with this particular language should not have difficulty following them. The exercises at the end of each chapter are intended to stimulate the student to think more about how compilers are constructed; outline solutions to the exercises in chapters 1-12 are given at the end of the book. Chapter 1 discusses the compilation process in general terms, as well as the relationship between high level programming languages and typical computers, while Chapter 2 goes on to discuss the formal definition of programming languages. Chapter 3 covers lexical analysis and Chapters 4 and 5 are concerned with top-down and bottom-up methods of syntax analysis. Chapter 6 describes how a context-free grammar can be used as a framework for the compiler actions and Chapter 7 deals with the overall design of compilers with particular emphasis on the design of multi-pass compilers.

The structure of symbol tables and mode (or type) tables for languages with complex types is dealt with in Chapter 8, while Chapter 9 is concerned with local and global storage allocation. Chapters 10 and 11 deal with code generation and the use of a machine-independent intermediate code.

Chapter 12 is a discussion of methods of error recovery and diagnosis while Chapter 13 introduces ideas concerned with the production of reliable compilers.

Editorial Review:

Automatic transformation of a sequential program into a parallel form is a subject that presents a great intellectual challenge and promises a great practical award. There is a tremendous investment in existing sequential programs, and scientists and engineers continue to write their application programs in sequential languages (primarily in Fortran). The demand for higher speedups increases. The job of a restructuring compiler is to discover the dependence structure and the characteristics of the given machine. Much attention has been focused on the Fortran do loop. This is where one expects to find major chunks of computation that need to be performed repeatedly for different values of the index variable. Many loop transformations have been designed over the years, and several of them can be found in any parallelizing compiler currently in use in industry or at a university research facility. The book series on K Loop Transformations for Restructuring Compilers k provides a rigorous theory of loop transformations and dependence analysis. We want to develop the transformations in a consistent mathematical framework using objects like directed graphs, matrices, and linear equations. Then, the algorithms that implement the transformations can be precisely described in terms of certain abstract mathematical algorithms. The first volume, Loop Transformations for Restructuring Compilers: The Foundations, provided the general mathematical background needed for loop transformations (including those basic mathematical algorithms), discussed data dependence, and introduced the major transformations. The current volume, Loop Parallelization, builds a detailed theory of iteration-level loop transformations based on the material developed in the previous book.

Editorial Review:

Automatic transformation of a sequential program into a parallel form is a subject that presents a great intellectual challenge and promises great practical rewards. There is a tremendous investment in existing sequential programs, and scientists and engineers continue to write their application programs in sequential languages (primarily in Fortran),but the demand for increasing speed is constant. The job of a restructuring compiler is to discover the dependence structure of a given program and transform the program in a way that is consistent with both that dependence structure and the characteristics of the given machine. Much attention in this field of research has been focused on the Fortran do loop. This is where one expects to find major chunks of computation that need to be performed repeatedly for different values of the index variable. Many loop transformations have been designed over the years, and several of them can be found in any parallelizing compiler currently in use in industry or at a university research facility. Loop Transformations for Restructuring Compilers: The Foundations provides a rigorous theory of loop transformations. The algorithms that implement the transformations can then be precisely described in terms of certain abstract mathematical algorithms. The book provides the general mathematical background needed for loop transformations (including those basic mathematical algorithms), discusses data dependence, and introduces the major transformations. The next volume will build a detailed theory of loop transformations based on the material developed here. Loop Transformations for Restructuring Compilers: The Foundations presents a theory of loop transformations that is rigorous and yet reader-friendly.

Editorial Review:

'Design by programming' has proved very successful in the development of complex software systems. This book describes the construction of programs for VLSI digital circuit design, using the language Tangram, and shows how they can be compiled automatically in fully asynchronous circuits. Handshake circuits were invented by the author to separate questions involving the efficient implementation of the VLSI circuits from issues arising in their design. Dr van Berkel presents a mathematical theory of handshake circuits and a silicon compiler supported by a correctness proof. The treatment of VLSI realizations of handshake circuits includes various forms of optimization, handshake refinement, message encoding, circuit initialization, and testing. The approach is illustrated with a host of examples drawn from a wide range of application areas. The book will be of use to electrical engineers and computer scientists involved in VLSI design.
