Hello, I'm Gregory Chaitin and I'm the author of
Exploring RANDOMNESS, which is my attempt to explain
the technical heart of my theory of algorithmic
information as understandably as possible. To make
my theory more concrete, I've converted it into a
theory of the size in bits of real computer programs,
programs that you can actually run. See also my
new book, "Conversations with a Mathematician: Math,
Art, Science and the Limits of Reason", which is a
collection of my most wide-ranging and non-technical
lectures and interviews.---Gregory Chaitin, IBM Research
Division

Editorial Review:

This book presents the technical core of Chaitin's theory of program-size complexity, also known as algorithmic information theory. LISP is used to present the key algorithms and to enable computer users to interact with the author's proofs and discover for themselves how they work.

Editorial Review:

The LISP language is designed primarily for symbolic data processing used for symbolic calculations in differential and integral calculus, electrical circuit theory, mathematical logic, game playing, and other fields of artificial intelligence.

The manual describes LISP, a formal mathematical language. LISP differs from most programming languages in three important ways. The first way is in the nature of the data. In the LISP language, all data are in the form of symbolic expressions usually referred to as S-expressions, of indefinite length, and which have a branching tree-type of structure, so that significant subexpressions can be readily isolated. In the LISP system, the bulk of the available memory is used for storing S-expressions in the form of list structures. The second distinction is that the LISP language is the source language itself which specifies in what way the S-expressions are to be processed. Third, LISP can interpret and execute programs written in the form of S-expressions. Thus, like machine language, and unlike most other high level languages, it can be used to generate programs for further executions.

Lacks overall perspective 2 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Let me begin with some compliments. The author's treatment of packages, always a tricky concept for LISPers, is superior. Shapiro introduces them early, and applies them consistently throughout the rest of the book. Another plus is his conversational tone that makes the book easy to follow. Most of his explanations seem accurate.

Now the bad news: there are many details introduced early while basic concepts are pushed way far back in the book. While the author is entitled to his own opinion about what's important, there are a couple of issues that are particularly bothersome. The let statement is not introduced until chapter 27, but gensym, a much more advanced topic is introduced earlier. There seems to be no mention that the eval command is not in wide usage and should be used sparingly.

Also, the reader does not come away with any notion of what is acceptable programming style. Sure, people have differences, but that doesn't give the author the right to shy away from this issue.

Despite the clarity of Shapiro's prose, Common Lisp: An Interactive Guide does not communicate what makes LISP special, nor with a sense of the range of programs that can be written with LISP. It might have been better to take a project oriented approach from the beginning, introducing concepts as necessary. The rest could be looked up in a reference manual.

If you are a first time programmer with no knowledge of LISP, Winston & Horn, LISP 3d edition brings you up to speed faster. If you know another programming language already, Koschmann "A Lisp Companion" is a wonderful choice. Both these books address beginners concerns, but also show the reader the bigger picture than does Shapiro.

In short: there is too much emphasis on detail, and not enough perspective. With the publishing of ANSI Common LISP, which serves as both a reference and a crash course, there is no reason to buy this book. However, I would give this author a second look in another book - he is clearly an accomplished educator and communicator, even though his efforts in this instance were misdirected.

Editorial Review:

The text uses a tutorial style that focuses on learning by interaction and experimentation. The text also thoroughly covers programming in Pure LISP before programming in Imperative LISP so that students get used to recursive programming. It gives an ordered presentation of Commom LISP - for example, it introduces packages simultaneously with symbols for easier assimilation and provides extensive example interactions with LISP to illustrate material being taught. The book devotes attention to style and debugging to familiarize students with realistic situations and helps novices recognize error messages and what they mean through intentional keyboard errors.

It's a five-star book, but... 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 23 people found this review helpful.

...it's been obsoleted by its own fouth edition. No place on the listing for this book do I find a hint that this is the third edition of a book currently in its FOURTH edition. They renamed the book The Little Schemer for the fourth revision. Buy that book instead.

Editorial Review:

There are surprises in store for the diligent reader of this masterful introduction to recursion as a fundamental tool for expressing and solving problems. With wit and wisdom, The Little LISPer unfolds some of the most beautiful concepts in mathematics, computer science, and logic.

The authors' goal is to show that recursive thinking is first of all fun, that it is powerful, and that the programming language Lisp allows one to express ideas recursively and naturally. There are hard problems along the way, but their solution brings mastery of recursive, functional, and meta-linguistic abstractions, developing skills in the underlying creative programming in Lisp. The Little LISPer is self-contained: an interpreter for the language is developed using the tools of the book itself .

VERY GOOD BOOK, except... 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I learned to programming Common Lisp using Tanimoto's book (in conjunction with Winston Horn's "Lisp"). The book's writing is superb, and the examples are very well thought out and implemented.

One word of caution: the book was written before the complete standardization of Common Lisp. So some of the functions, such as those specific to I/O and FEXPR will not work on current Common Lisp implementations (such as GCL). But all of these functions can be worked around easily.

I'll still give this book a five star. The book is particularly good for self-study. So I recommend it to any AI enthusiast.

A very broad treatment of AI Fundamentals 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Tanimoto provides a very broad treatment of AI techniques. As such dicussions are often brief. There is an outstanding section on Computer vision. Knowledge representation is also well covered. The author presents highly idiomatic examples of Lisp code. This book would be ideal for anyone not familiar with AI techniques who wants to do AI research and/or development.

Editorial Review:

This version of "The Elements of Artifical Intelligence" is an introductory overview of AI today and expresses AI theory in programs written with the new standard Common LISP. The programs are short and accessible to the beginner. The book includes discussions of expert systems, vision and knowledge representation.
