Editorial Review:

A financial guide aimed squarely at "Generation Debt"-and their anxious parents-from the country's most trusted and dynamic source on money matters.

You've got student-loan debt that is a multiple of your entry-level salary. An obscene amount of your take-home pay goes out the window every month for rent on a dinky apartment in a cool neighborhood. Lucky you have that credit card with the ever-increasing charge limit! How else could you afford those fabulous shoes? "Hey, guys, the next round's on me!" What difference does it make? Your goals are totally unattainable and the idea that you'll ever get control of your money is ludicrous, so why even try? Okay. It's scary. Suze Orman knows you better than you know yourself. And now, the world's most trusted expert on personal finance, the #1 New York Times-bestselling author, is going to break it down for you.

Whether you're twenty-five and single, a thirty-year-old newlywed, or married with kids and a mortgage at thirty-five; whether you're broke or making ends meet; whether you're financially aware or financially clueless, Start Smart was written with you in mind.

Beginning with a quick diagnostic section that tells you where you are (vs. where you think you are) and outlines your priorities (1, 2, 3...) for getting out of the red and into the black, Start Smart acts as a sort of "route planner," identifying the easy money moves to get you on the road to recovery and within reach of your dreams.

If you've never cracked a financial book in your life, if you can't deal with the unwieldy, impenetrable tomes currently on offer, if you've zoned out every time a parent has tried to share some wisdom about money-Start Smart is the book you need. You will learn:

- how to get a grip on credit card debt
- why student-loan debt is not the worst thing in the world
- how your credit score plays into nearly every financial move you will ever make
- how to make the most of the benefits that come with your first real job
- how to buy your first home
- what you need to know before you move in together
- what kind of insurance-auto, home, renter's, health-you need and what you don't
- what to do if you're self-employed

Julia Cameron's book was the reason I've been able to create plays, acting jobs! I can only say this: IT WORKS! I'm living proof! For anyone who is blocked, these tools used over years creates a strong powerful base upon which to create work! The Green Room

This book is the best friend you can ever have 5 out of 5 stars.

Just get it.

The first chapter as I remember was a little bit boring for me and when I start complaining to my friend, she told me :"Just read it."
And that was the best advice she ever gave me.
I gained a lot of self-confidence as an artist and person, came to conclusion in a lot of things that bothered me for a long time, it truly gave me a peace of mind.

So, for you, my friend:"Just ge-e-et it".

The Artist's Way 5 out of 5 stars.

This is my second copy of this book. I've worn one out already. I cannot recommend this book strongly enough. It is life altering!

A must read for anyone interested in being more creative, just being creative or living life to the fullest 5 out of 5 stars.

I can't even explain how much change I've made in my life since reading this book. Julia Cameron says things that every artist wants to hear. The main things I've taken from this book are Morning Pages, Artist Dates and going on walks - those three simple things have totally centered me. I wasn't even necessarily diligent with all the other worksheets.

Even if you don't care to increase your creativity, it will help anyone to live life!

The book everyone should read 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Thomas Sowell has demonstrated once again that economics does not have to include lengthy, convoluted concepts, charts or jargon. 'Basic Economics' should be in every high school and college library. Economic teachers/professors would be wise to include this gem for classroom instruction as there are excellent concepts and historical content presented logically with great care and clarity.

I applaud this work as it avoids the usual sterile presentation of economics. The book is indeed engaging while maintaining the goal of being informative and factual. Plus, it is so very timely.

Much of what Sowell states in this book can be applied to our current economic situation. In fact, this book was published 18 months ago and provides solid, factual examples and relevant information on what happens when governments provide 'bail-outs' along with reactions of various economic systems to failed entities. We would be wise to consider Sowell's observations and sage advice in such matters.

No matter your interest in economics, get this book! You will find just how helpful, informative and necessary this book is from page one!

Editorial Review:

This completely revised and updated third edition of Thomas Sowell's instrumental work includes a new chapter on government finance. Basic Economics is a citizen's guide to economics--for those who want to understand how the economy works but have no interest in jargon or equations. Sowell reveals the general principles behind any kind of economy--capitalist, socialist, feudal, and so on. In readable language, he shows how to critique economic policies in terms of the incentives they create, rather than the goals they proclaim. With clear explanations of the entire field, from rent control and the rise and fall of businesses to the international balance of payments, this is the first book for anyone who wishes to understand how the economy functions.

Great Book for Students! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I first heard about this book on "Pro Business With Dr. Mike Beitler," an internet-radio show about free-market capitalism. Hazlitt does not write like an ivory-tower academic; his work is easy to understand and a pleasure to read.

Read this along with Beitler's "Rational Individualism" book Rational Individualism: A Moral Argument for Limited Government & Capitalism.

Must-Read For Politicians And Business Leaders 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Every politician and business leader should be forced to read and understand Economics in One Lesson. Again and again, the classic mistake is made: pursuing a short-term policy that benefits only a select few at the expense of a long-term policy that could benefit many. It's why hybrid car policies can lead to more traffic and pollution. Why setting maximum prices for staples (such as milk) can lead to shortages of those staples. There are many more examples. Read the book. It's a quick read with a huge ROI.

Editorial Review:

"Before reading The Panic of 1907, the year 1907 seemed like a long time ago and a different world. The authors, however, bring this story alive in a fast-moving book, and the reader sees how events of that time are very relevant for today's financial world. In spite of all of our advances, including a stronger monetary system and modern tools for managing risk, Bruner and Carr help us understand that we are not immune to a future crisis."
—Dwight B. Crane, Baker Foundation Professor, Harvard Business School

"Bruner and Carr provide a thorough, masterly, and highly readable account of the 1907 crisis and its management by the great private banker J. P. Morgan. Congress heeded the lessons of 1907, launching the Federal Reserve System in 1913 to prevent banking panics and foster financial stability. We still have financial problems. But because of 1907 and Morgan, a century later we have a respected central bank as well as greater confidence in our money and our banks than our great-grandparents had in theirs."
—Richard Sylla, Henry Kaufman Professor of the History of Financial Institutions and Markets, and Professor of Economics, Stern School of Business, New York University

"A fascinating portrayal of the events and personalities of the crisis and panic of 1907. Lessons learned and parallels to the present have great relevance. Crises and panics are as much a part of our future as our past."
—John Strangfeld, Vice Chairman, Prudential Financial

"Who would have thought that a hundred years after the Panic of 1907 so much remained to be written about it? Bruner and Carr break significant new ground because they are willing to do the heavy lifting of combing through massive archival material to identify and weave together important facts. Their book will be of interest not only to banking theorists and financial historians, but also to business school and economics students, for its rare ability to teach so clearly why and how a panic unfolds."
—Charles Calomiris, Henry Kaufman Professor of Financial Institutions, Columbia University, Graduate School of Business

Horrible 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I've heard that kaplan under calculates your CAT scores by 100 but when I actually did it, I found the practice tests pretty ridiculous. Its not because the questions are harder, but the fact that the scoring algorithm intentionally underestimates your score significantly.
Ex: the official practice test gave me a 660, where as kaplan gave me a 560.

Also the CAT math sections are full of errors. The verbal sections have a real problem it comes to double spacing. Its really annoying when you have spend time to distinguish between when the passage ends and when the actual question begins. I also found a reading passage where the final paragraph was full of wingdings and incomplete sentences. Some Critical reasoning questions are really unsolvable. I remember one question that assumed a higher draft pick always resulted in a better team winning record.

Another problem I have with the test is the horrible explanations. Really really dissapointing, especially on sentence correction.

Comparing Kaplan to Manhattan GMAT, which has really tough questions but also very detailed explanations, Kaplan seems to have been written by some of the most careless people ever. It really takes a lot of guts for a company to publish something that was this full of errors.
