Editorial Review:

“I have used this text with both graduate and undergraduate students. I recommend it highly!”
Dr. Karl Strandberg, Cal State University- Dominguez Hills

"This book is a major source of insights and perspectives for all those studying on leadership courses in both the business and education sectors. It is also an excellent source for school leaders and educators who want to go deepen their understanding of leadership. After reviewing leadership books for over twenty years this book is by far one of the best I have come across."
—INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF EDUCATIONAL MANAGEMENT

“This book offers a full coverage of contemporary notions of leadership, including traditional theories, salient models, and new domains. The chapters on women in leadership, culture, and team leadership are welcomed additions. The sophisticated but readable style and the inclusion of superb case material make this book a valuable resource for both entry-level and advance leadership courses.”
Linda L. Putnam, Texas A&M University

“The additions to the Fourth Edition are excellent, especially the new section on ‘Culture and Leadership’ and the updated chapter on ‘Women and Leadership.’”
Gill Robinson Hickman, University of Richmond

“The excellent work of Peter Northouse invites teachers to grow along with students in research-based knowledge of leadership theory and practice. Peter’s book leads in and of itself!”
Taggart E. Smith, Purdue University

“Northouse skillfully presents both thorough and up-to-date theory on leadership in this Fourth Edition. The new leadership chapter addressing the topic of culture is especially informative for our increasingly global classroom discussions. His ability to provide great application-based cases helps this leadership theory come alive. Northouse continues to be a scholar, as well as a student, of current leadership knowledge.”
Mary F. Sully de Luque, Thunderbird, The Garvin School of International Management

“Northouse has given a gift to leadership professors and students by compiling this concise, insightful, critical, and user-friendly exploration of the somewhat bewildering and confusing literature on leadership theory.”
Robert E. (Bob) Colvin, Christopher Newport University

Heartened by the positive response to previous editions of Leadership: Theory and Practice, this Fourth Edition is written with the same objective to bridge the gap between the often simplistic popular approaches to leadership and the more abstract theoretical approaches.

In addition to the new two color-layout, the Fourth Edition also:

  • Examines the latest research on culture, the dimensions of culture, and how culture affects the leadership process in a new chapter titled “Culture and Leadership”.
  • Takes a closer look at styles of female and male leaders, the causes for the “glass ceiling,” and how the glass ceiling is being broken in organizational settings in a newly written “Women and Leadership” chapter.
  • Includes new real-world case studies, research references, new figures and tables, additional research-based applications, and expanded discussions of selected leadership topics.
  • Provides an Instructors Resources CD with PowerPoint slides, a test bank, writing assignments, chapter reviews, and much more. (Place your order with SAGE customer service)

Not bad for a textbook 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I was not looking forward to this class and the textbook has proved to be interesting and not a bad read for a textbook.

About as helpful as you could hope for 4 out of 5 stars.

There are a lot of things I liked about this book. For starters, it is written pretty coherently, and generally does not get too wordy. With the topic it is covering this is a feat in and of itself. The color schemes they use throughout the book to separate different examples, figures, etc further makes the book accessible.

The problems for each chapter are separated into categories for easy, intermediate, and difficult and are labeled by topic as well. This is very useful for studying if you want to brush up on a specific topic or difficulty. The back of the book provides answers to all quantitative questions, although it doesn't show you how to work out any of them.

What I didn't really like was that it was sometime difficult to find out how to work certain problems at the end of each chapter. Fairly often you will find the method to solve a problem embedded/hidden within a paragraph rather than highlighted separately. This generally does not apply to the main equations, but it can still make doing homework tedious with all the searching. Also, with the exception of the simpler chapters (Time Value of Money, and Exchange Rates) where there are numerous examples, most other chapters use one example that is either stretched out across the chapter if the problem is in depth or there will simply be one basic example. This can make it difficult to figure out how to solve any types of variations of the problem you may be required to do.

All in all, a very solid book that makes this difficult course very manageable (assuming you have a decent professor).

Editorial Review:

Written for and praised by students just like you, FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT: THEORY AND PRACTICE gives you relevant, practical, and easy-to-understand information covering all of the financial management topics you need to succeed in this course. Underlying theory is presented first in an accessible style and then followed by the practical application.

Editorial Review:

On any given day, one out of four Americans opts for a quick and cheap meal at a fast-food restaurant, without giving either its speed or its thriftiness a second thought. Fast food is so ubiquitous that it now seems as American, and harmless, as apple pie. But the industry's drive for consolidation, homogenization, and speed has radically transformed America's diet, landscape, economy, and workforce, often in insidiously destructive ways. Eric Schlosser, an award-winning journalist, opens his ambitious and ultimately devastating exposé with an introduction to the iconoclasts and high school dropouts, such as Harlan Sanders and the McDonald brothers, who first applied the principles of a factory assembly line to a commercial kitchen. Quickly, however, he moves behind the counter with the overworked and underpaid teenage workers, onto the factory farms where the potatoes and beef are grown, and into the slaughterhouses run by giant meatpacking corporations. Schlosser wants you to know why those French fries taste so good (with a visit to the world's largest flavor company) and "what really lurks between those sesame-seed buns." Eater beware: forget your concerns about cholesterol, there is--literally--feces in your meat.

Schlosser's investigation reaches its frightening peak in the meatpacking plants as he reveals the almost complete lack of federal oversight of a seemingly lawless industry. His searing portrayal of the industry is disturbingly similar to Upton Sinclair's The Jungle, written in 1906: nightmare working conditions, union busting, and unsanitary practices that introduce E. coli and other pathogens into restaurants, public schools, and homes. Almost as disturbing is his description of how the industry "both feeds and feeds off the young," insinuating itself into all aspects of children's lives, even the pages of their school books, while leaving them prone to obesity and disease. Fortunately, Schlosser offers some eminently practical remedies. "Eating in the United States should no longer be a form of high-risk behavior," he writes. Where to begin? Ask yourself, is the true cost of having it "your way" really worth it? --Lesley Reed

Editorial Review:

Among the library of investment books promising no-fail strategies for riches, Benjamin Graham's classic, The Intelligent Investor, offers no guarantees or gimmicks but overflows with the wisdom at the core of all good portfolio management.

The hallmark of Graham's philosophy is not profit maximization but loss minimization. In this respect, The Intelligent Investor is a book for true investors, not speculators or day traders. He provides, "in a form suitable for the laymen, guidance in adoption and execution of an investment policy" (1). This policy is inherently for the longer term and requires a commitment of effort. Where the speculator follows market trends, the investor uses discipline, research, and his analytical ability to make unpopular but sound investments in bargains relative to current asset value. Graham coaches the investor to develop a rational plan for buying stocks and bonds, and he argues that this plan must be a bulwark against emotional behavior that will always be tempting during abrupt bull and bear markets.

Since it was first published in 1949, Graham's investment guide has sold over a million copies and has been praised by such luminaries as Warren E. Buffet as "the best book on investing ever written." These accolades are well deserved. In its new form--with commentary on each chapter and extensive footnotes prepared by senior Money editor, Jason Zweig--the classic is now updated in light of changes in investment vehicles and market activities since 1972. What remains is a better book. Graham's sage advice, analytical guides, and cautionary tales are still valid for the contemporary investor, and Zweig's commentaries demonstrate the relevance of Graham's principles in light of 1990s and early twenty-first century market trends. --Patrick O'Kelley

Future Marketing 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book has an awesome collection from various marketing methods and in depth of understanding of situations marketing strategies. Author is renowned in the area of business in schools and practice. I am concerned about the future trusted community based marketing, the concepts remain same but the usage of marketing is totally dependent on how fast, accurately you are building a virtual marketplace is the key factor and can't be ignored. These days the concepts are already achieved among web 2.0 initiatives, but there are certain key attributes which are missing from those are trust based marketing, narrowed down to a community based marketing etc. One example of such kind of platform is collabotrade.com where an individual can build a perfect web based trusted community.

Editorial Review:

The 12th edition of this popular text continues to build on four major marketing themes: building and managing profitable customer relationships, building and managing strong brands to create brand equity, harnessing new marketing technologies in the digital age, and marketing in a socially responsible way around the globe. Thoroughly updated and streamlined, Principles of Marketing tells the stories that reveal the drama of modern marketing, reflecting the major trends and forces that are impacting this dynamic and ever-changing field. Topics include: the marketing environment, managing information, consumer & business buyer behavior, segmentation, targeting, and positioning, branding strategies, distribution channels, advertising and sales promotion, direct marketing, and the global marketplace. An excellent tool for anyone in marketing and sales, whether self- or corporate- employed.

Expensive, Bloated, But Useful 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This textbook is expensive. I think the price is absurd.

However, the information contained is worthwhile. Guffey could have condensed a lot of material.

Things that work in the book's favor are the checklists at the end of sections and a summary of the chapter. Small useful side menus abbreviating useful terminology or steps are littered through out the book; and they are worthwhile to review and use.

Condense the text and make it more affordable. I say to Guffey stop aiding Publishers the in grifting of student's pockets.

Money maven Suze Orman's latest book, Women & Money addresses the complicated (and often dysfunctional) relationship women have with personal finance. Orman's direct, non-condescending style is perfect for this subject matter--she begins with the premise that "Women can invest, save, and handle debt as well and skillfully as any man" and then tackles the important question--"So why don't they?" Designed to educate and inspire, Women & Money also offers a "Save Yourself Plan," a five-month program that "delivers genuine long-term financial security." Want to know more? Read the First Chapter of Women & Money

For Women Only

I never thought I'd write a book about money just for women. I never thought it was necessary. So then why am I doing just that in my eighth book? And why now? Let me explain. All my previous books were written with the belief that gender is not a factor on any level in mastering the nuts and bolts of smart financial management. Women can invest, save, and handle debt just as well and skillfully as any man. I still believe that--why would anyone think differently? So imagine my surprise when I learned that some of the people closest to me in my life were in the dark about their own finances. Clueless. Or, in some cases, willfully resisting doing what they knew needed to be done. I'm talking about smart, competent, accomplished women who present a face to the world that is pure confidence and capability. Do you mean to tell me that I, Suze Orman, who make my living solving the financial problems of total strangers, couldn't spot the trouble brewing so close to home? I don't think I'm blind; I just think that these women became very, very good at hiding their troubles from me.Why not? They had years of practice hiding them from themselves.

can I shed some light? 5 out of 5 stars.
39 of 41 people found this review helpful.

If you're confused about all the different Mankiw Macroeconomics texts floating about out there, lemme set you straight.

The one you see on this page: "Macroeconomics" (ISBN 0716762137) is usually used in 2nd or 3rd year macroeconomics courses in college. This is because the exercises at the end of each chapter can be a little equation-intensive, and some of the exercises, such as the proper derivation of the IS-LM curve, require differentiation. The text of each chapter itself is not so vicious, so a energetic instructor could conceivably use this book in a lower-level course, if you were willing replace the book's exercises with easier ones.

Anyhow, the sixth edition has just come out; this has a blue cover. This replaces the fifth edition, which had an orange cover.

Mankiw is also the author, inter alia, of "Principles of Macroeconomics," the fourth edition of which (ISBN-10: 0324236956) was just released, at least as of my writing. This text is more appropriate for freshman-level, non-major survey courses, or for honors high-school courses, such as AP courses. The exercises at the end of each chapter require only arithmetic and the most rudimentary algebra.

Note that "Macroeconomics" is not just a gratuitous ratcheting up of "Principles of Macroeconomics:" they're two fundamentally different books, arranged differently, and with completely different publishers. There are even massive concepts in "Macroeconomics" (IS-LM model, Solow steady state, the Keynesian consumption function, etc.) which don't warrant a mention in the much more watered-down "Principles of Macroeconomics."

Editorial Review:

The #1 bestselling intermediate macroeconomics book, Mankiw’s masterful text covers the field as accessibly and concisely as possible, in a way that emphasizes the relevance of both macroeconomics’s classical roots and its current practice. Featuring the latest data, new case studies, and a number of significant content updates, the new Sixth Edition takes the Mankiw legacy even further.
